By Tod Leonard
As culinary tendencies go, Tiger Woods isn’t exactly a guy who will leaf through the Michelin Guide when he comes to your town. Yelp might be more his speed. We know this because he has now put together a menu five times for the champions dinner at the Masters—known officially as the “Masters Club Dinner”—and if you’re not a meat lover—and we mean, caveman-like meat lover—you’re pretty much out of luck. Throw Mexican food and sushi in there, too. Oh, and cheeseburgers.

Come to think of it, Tiger’s right on for many of us with his choices, since we would have politely nibbled on South African Trevor Immelman’s Bobotie (spiced minced meat pie with an egg topping) or Canadian Mike Weir’s elk and wild boar.

In April, when the 2020 Masters was supposed to be played, Woods already had released his choices for this year’s champions feast on Tuesday night at Augusta National Golf Club, and though disappointed that he couldn’t host the dinner in the spring, he posted a fantastic picture of his family having their own “champions dinner.”

Masters Champions Dinner quarantine style. Nothing better than being with family. pic.twitter.com/xPK769CWCf

— Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) April 7, 2020

This year’s fare is strikingly similar in its California leanings to his last effort in 2006. There was a thought that given the change to November that Tiger might go with a Thanksgiving theme, and Cajun-spiced deep-fried turkey sounds pretty tasty to us, but he went back to what he knows best.

The menu, as confirmed in a tweet by the Masters:

Appetizer: Masters Roll
Tempura shrimp, spicy tuna, avocado, eel sauce, tempura flakes, picked ginger, Wasabi, soy sauce

Main Course: Prime Steak and Chicken Fajitas
Grilled vegetables, refried beans, Mexican rice, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole, flour tortillas

Dessert Trio
Classic flan, churros with chocolate sauce, sopapillas

One thing missing that would be a huge disappointment if left off: milkshakes, which we believe Woods mentioned in the spring. He first served up shakes to go with his cheeseburgers and fries in 1998. Maybe he’s leaving that as a surprise.

And just as an aside, if you think Woods’ choices are a bit pedestrian, consider Bubba Watson. He’s won two Masters and picked the exact menu both times: grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and cornbread. We think Applebee’s might have catered those.

Past winners gather for the Champions Dinner at the 2019 Masters. Barry Koenig/Augusta National

By Ryan Herrington
The Masters has already moved to November, is being held without any spectators and without the two lead-in events (the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals) that have come to kick-off the week in Georgia. But how the COVID-19 pandemic might impact the tournament’s other traditions is unclear. The club has yet to announce whether Wednesday’s Par-3 Contest or Thursday’s ceremonial opening tee shots from honorary starters Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player will go on as usual.

What is on schedule, however, is the Champions Dinner, held annually on Tuesday night of Masters week. Asked about it after Saturday’s play at the Zozo Championship, Tiger Woods, the man responsible with coming up with the menu as the defending Masters champion, said the plan is to still hold the event that dates back to 1952. Past champions reportedly have been notified the dinner is a go as well.

That said, Woods noted that the dinner will be a different affair than in year’s past.

“We’re not going to have it upstairs [in the clubhouse],” Woods said. “I think we’re going to have it downstairs where there’s more room so we can all be socially distant.”

Additionally, the expectation is that some of the retired winners are unlikely to attend this year. “I think we’re not going to get a lot of the past champions coming because obviously, they’re at the at-risk age,” said Woods, remarking that it was a shame this would be happening but that it was understandable given the circumstances. “This is unlike any times we’ve ever had in the past, so we’ve got to do what we can do to obviously have the traditions that we’d like to have but also maintain safety guidelines.”

As for what Woods will be serving on the menu, the five-time green jacket winner said that he’ll be going forward with what he was planning in the spring: steak and chicken fajitas, sushi and sashimi, along with milkshakes for dessert.

Finally, a social media meal post with substance.

If this was a normal Masters week, Tiger Woods would be celebrating his 2019 triumph at Augusta National on Tuesday night by hosting the annual Champions Dinner. However, these are not normal times, which is why the 15-time major winner, like the rest of the world, is hanging out at home with his family.

But that didn’t stop Woods from toasting his win in style, as evidenced by this photo posted to his Twitter and Instagram accounts:

Masters Champions Dinner quarantine style. Nothing better than being with family. pic.twitter.com/xPK769CWCf

The rare instance where the Internet produced something of merit. Forget tales that vaccines may be on the way; THIS is the light our country desperately needs.

In fact, we couldn’t contain our joy to just one observation, so here’s 12 of them.

1.) For those planning a wedding, don’t spend any time fighting over centre pieces. You’re not beating Tiger’s sterling replica of the Masters trophy.

2.) Tiger’s smile, which 100 per cent says, “That’s right, I won the %&*#ing Masters.”

3.) Tiger going full Don Johnson with the T-shirt/green jacket combo.

4.) Dog looking at sweets.

5.) Dog looking off camera.

6.) Dogs.

Related: 14 Curious Masters Champions Dinner Choices

7.) A glimpse of Tiger’s backyard golf layout, instilling instant envy to those trapped in an apartment. Or just general envy for, you know, OWNING A GOLF HOLE IN HIS BACKYARD.

8.) Seriously, need the number for Tiger’s landscaping guy. Gardening is immaculate.

9.) The stay-at-home beard. We’ve seen worse.

10.) SO many desserts! Too many, in fact. There’s an 80 per cent chance “Should we be concerned about Tiger’s diet?” is something “First Take” will tackle tomorrow.

11.) The fact the finest table settings are out for a dinner that appears to be fajitas and sushi.

12.) In all honesty, the genuine happiness emanating from the family. Tiger Woods went through hell. So is the world right now. Doesn’t mean we can’t stop and still smell the roses.

By Christopher Powers
After winning the 1997 Masters as a 21-year-old, Tiger Woods returned to Augusta National the following year and famously served what any college-aged kid would serve at the Champions Dinner: cheeseburgers, fries and milkshakes. In the 22 years since that night, a lot has changed in Woods’ life. His taste buds have not.

During a conference call with reporters previewing the upcoming Masters, Woods, the defending champion, gave an early look at what would be on his 2020 Champions Dinner Menu. It won’t be cheeseburgers and fries again, but it will be one of the next best things—fajitas! He’ll also be serving sushi, and, most importantly, he’s considering bringing back milkshakes:

Tiger's Masters Champions Dinner menu is a nod to his SoCal roots:

—Steak and chicken fajitas
—Susi and sashimi
—"Debating whether to have milkshakes as dessert, because that's one of my great memories, to see Gene Sarazen and Sam Snead having milkshakes that night in '98."

Anybody else’s mouth watering? Strong menu from Tiger, who had a very similar menu for his last Masters Champions Dinner in 2006. That year it was steak and chicken fajitas, quesadillas as an appetizer, salad, Mexican rice, refried beans and apple pie and ice cream for dessert. In 2002 and 2003 he went with porterhouse steak, chicken and sushi. We’re sure some last-minute alterations will be made for 2020, but for now we’ll still give the menu a solid A. It will be bumped to A+ if milkshakes make the cut.
