Tiger Woods is “awake, responsive and recovering” after undergoing emergency surgery following a car accident on Tuesday morning, according to an update posted by Woods’ camp.

The statement, released on Woods’ social channels, confirms that Woods was involved in a single-car accident this morning in Los Angeles before providing a detailed update on Woods’ condition.

“Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialists at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, a level 1 trauma centre,” said Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, as part of the update.

“Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

Comminuted fractures refers to bone fragments or splinters.

The statement concludes: “There are no further updates at this time and we continue to thank you for your well-wishes and privacy for him and his family.”

Woods was the sole occupant of a 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV when he headed northbound on a downhill, curving portion of Hawthorne Ave., a two-lane road in Rancho Palos Verdes. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods was driving at a “relatively greater speed than normal” when his vehicle crossed onto the wrong side of the road before veering off the road entirely and onto a hillside at 7:12 a.m. local time. A neighbour called 911 to alert authorities of the accident, and Woods was conscious when they arrived on the scene.

This is the latest in a long history of injuries for Woods, a 15-time major champion and 82-time PGA Tour winner. He last competed alongside his son at the PNC Championship, which wrapped up on Dec. 20 in Orlando. He then underwent a microdiscectomy procedure to remove a pressurized disc fragment that was pinching a nerve and was hoping to return in time for the Masters in April. It was his fifth back surgery overall and the first since his spinal fusion in April 2017. Woods has also had four surgeries done on his left knee, most recently in August 2019.

On Sunday, Woods spoke with CBS’ Jim Nantz as part of his hosting duties for the Genesis Invitational and said he was awaiting the results of an upcoming MRI before he could ramp up practising and training for a return to competition. This, of course, re-sets the timeline for any possible return to the golf course.

Woods, 45, was in California for a two-day content shoot with Golf Digest/GOLFTV after serving as host for the Genesis Invitational, which finished on Sunday. Pictures surfaced on social media of Woods smiling with Dwayne Wade and David Spade at Rolling Hills Country Club on Monday, but with his movement still restricted from the microdiscectomy back procedure he had just a few months ago, he did not hit balls or play any holes. The shoot involved Woods giving on-course lessons to a number of celebrities, but he mostly provided instruction and hit a few putts. He was in good spirits on Monday but did not arrive to the course for the second day of shooting.

Tiger Woods was involved in a “high-speed” single-car accident outside Los Angeles at 7:12 a.m. Tuesday morning, per the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department, and was in “serious condition” after undergoing surgery for multiple injuries to his legs.

Woods was the sole occupant of a 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV when he headed northbound on a downhill, windy portion of Hawthorne Ave., a two-lane road in Rancho Palos Verdes. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods was driving at a “relatively greater speed than normal” when his vehicle crossed onto the wrong side of the road before veering off the road entirely and onto a hillside. A neighbour called 911 to alert authorities of the accident, and Woods was conscious when they arrived on the scene.

Personnel from the LACSD said the interior of the vehicle Woods was driving remained intact—and that, combined with the fact that Woods was wearing a seatbelt, allowed him to escape what “otherwise would have been a fatal crash,” according to Villanueva.

MORE: Tiger Woods’ car crash adds a cruel twist to an unreal saga

There was no evidence of impairment, according to the sheriff’s department, and Woods was reportedly calm and lucid when authorities arrived at the scene.

Woods’ longtime agent, Mark Steinberg, released the following statement after the initial report of the crash, which occurred about 30 miles west of where Tiger grew up in Cypress: “Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.” As of Tuesday evening, there was no update on the specifics of Tiger’s injuries or what the surgery entailed.

Woods, 45, was in California for a two-day content shoot with Golf Digest/GOLFTV after serving as host for the Genesis Invitational, which finished on Sunday. Pictures surfaced on social media of Woods smiling with Dwayne Wade and David Spade at Rolling Hills Country Club on Monday, but with his movement still restricted from the back procedure he had just a few months ago, he did not hit balls or play any holes. The shoot involved Woods giving on-course lessons to a number of celebrities, but he mostly provided instruction and hit a few putts. He was in good spirits on Monday but did not arrive to the course for the second day of shooting.

Discovery Golf, parent company of Golf Digest and GOLFTV, issued the following statement: “Tiger has a long-term partnership with Discovery developing exclusive content for GOLFTV and Golf Digest. He was filming his latest series with us yesterday, which will see him giving on-course instruction to a number of celebrities including Jada Pinkett Smith, Dwyane Wade and David Spade. He was due to continue filming with us today.

“Everyone at Discovery and Golf Digest wishes Tiger a speedy recovery and our thoughts are with him, his family and his team at this time.”

The news of Tiger Woods’ car accident in Los Angeles Tuesday morning generated a strong and passionate response from all around the country, from former President Barack Obama to a littany of sports stars sharing their prayers and well-wishes to Woods.

On Tuesday evening, Obama tweeted, “Sending my prayers to @TigerWoods and his family tonight—here’s to a speedy recovery for the GOAT of golf. If we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s to never count Tiger out.”

Speaking to the media ahead of this week’s WGC event at The Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla., Justin Thomas, who has grown close to Woods in recent years, held back tears when asked about the matter.

“I’m sick to my stomach. It hurts to see one of your closest friends get in an accident, and I just hope he’s all right,” Thomas said. “I just worry for his kids, I’m sure they’re struggling.” Following Thomas’ press conference, the rest of the scheduled interviews were canceled for the day.

Soon after Thomas was done PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan issued a statement: “We have been made aware of Tiger Woods’ car accident today. We are awaiting further information when he comes out of surgery. On behalf of the PGA Tour and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers.”

Adam Scott, who is also in this week’s WGC field, said the news was “sickening.”

“He’s our hero out here,” Scott told PGATour.com. “You think guys like Tiger and Kobe Bryant are untouchable, but they’re not. I just hope he’s all right.”

Augusta Natonal Chairman Fred Ridley joined in the chorus of wishes to Woods. “Tiger Woods is part of the Augusta National family, and the news of his accident is upsetting to all of us,” Ridley said. “We pray for him, for his full recovery and for his family during this difficult time.” The R&A also offered their support to Woods: “Our thoughts are with Tiger and his family at this time. We wish him all the very best for his recovery.

Many players took to Twitter to send their messages to the 15-time major winner. “[Tiger Woods], just seen the awful news. We know how tough you are, we’ve seen it a hundred times,” wrote Justin Rose. “Hoping and praying you’re ok my friend.” Fellow Englishman Ian Poulter added, “Thoughts are with Tiger Woods and others involved, wishing a speedy recovery and I hope the injuries are not bad.”

Bryson DeChambeau, who has been a frequent practice partner of Woods, also took to social media. “Heartbroken and shocked to hear about Tiger Woods accident today,” the reigning U.S. Open champ said. “My thoughts and prayers are with him for a full recovery.” Rickie Fowler, another friend and practice mate of Woods, said on Instagram, “I’ve seen what you are capable of and what you can come back from.”

Patrick Reed called Woods his idol. “I’ve been so fortunate to have been teammates and friends with him,” Reed said. “Right now all of my thoughts are with him and his family for a speedy recovery.” Harris English wrote, “Prayers up,” for Woods, while others like Ben An and C.T. Pan tweeted emojis in support.

Jack Nicklaus struck a similar tone in sending his love. “Barbara and I just heard about Tiger’s accident, and like everyone else, we are deeply concerned,” Nicklaus said. “We want to offer him our heartfelt support and prayers at this difficult time. Please join us in wishing Tiger a successful surgery and all the best for a full recovery.” Gary Player said he is praying “That it is not too serious,” with Tom Watson writing “Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family Tiger. We all wish you a complete recovery.”

Ernie Els, one of Woods’ rivals in his prime, called Tuesday “troubling.” “We’ve been friends a very long time, obviously I’m concerned for his well-being,” Els wrote on Twitter. “He’s always been a fighter and I hope he fully recovers very soon.” Phil Mickelson later chimed in: “We are all pulling for you, Tiger. We are so sorry that you and your family are going through this tough time. Everyone hopes and prays for your full and speedy recovery.”

The support extended past the golf confines. Sports legends such as Alex Rodriguez and Michael Phelps were among those keeping Tiger in mind. “Praying for my brother as we all anxiously await more news,” wrote Rodriguez. “Thinking of him and his entire family.” Phelps added: “Prayers for Tiger Woods.” Current NBA All-Star and golf advocate Steph Curry told Woods to “Stay strong.”

According to Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg, Woods is currently in surgery. The LA County Sheriff’s Department told a Los Angeles CBS affiliate that Woods’ injuries are believed to be non-life threatening.

After missing the cut at the Memorial, Cauley was supposed to play in a Monday U.S. Open sectional qualifier. According to his management firm, IMG, Cauley was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, five broken ribs, and a fractured lower leg.

Cauley’s father, Bill, told Golf Digest on Sunday his son was “doing great” following a surgery to put plates on his broken ribs. He is expected to be in the hospital for another few days and has been told he can’t fly for a couple weeks because of the collapsed lung.

Cauley’s good friend and former teammate at Alabama, Justin Thomas, visited Cauley in the hospital over the weekend.

“It calmed me a lot after seeing him,” the World No. 1 said. “I couldn’t hit a shot, couldn’t play a hole without thinking about him. And my buddy, Whis. . . . It sucks when your best friend’s in a serious car accident and there’s nothing you can do and nothing he can do.”

Cauley is one of just a handful of players including Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to earn his PGA Tour card by playing on sponsor’s exemptions after turning pro. In his sixth full season on the PGA Tour, Cauley has two top 10s and is 84th in the FedEx Cup standings. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Last Friday’s deadline to commit to the Valspar Championship focused on Tiger Woods, but Bill Haas will be another golfer fans are paying close attention to at this week’s event at Innisbrook. The six-time PGA Tour winner will make his return to competition after being injured in a Feb. 13 car crash in Pacific Palisades, Calif., that killed his friend, Mark Gibello.

“There’s not many templates to go by on something like this,” Haas told the Associated Press in his first interview since the accident. “I was in a state of shock, disbelief. It was a tragic event, traumatic. I’m still unsure how to handle it. I keep going back to focusing on the Gibello family.”

Gibello was driving a Ferrari that hit two two cars — one of which belonged to actor Luke Wilson — before going off the road near Riviera Country Club. The 71-year-old with whom Haas was staying with for the Genesis Open was the accident’s only fatality. Despite sitting in the passenger seat of Gibello’s car, Haas was released from the hospital the following day. He withdrew from the tournament and has practiced or played very little since, according to the AP. But he hopes to find a sense of “relief” once he gets back inside the ropes.

“The amount of love and support and outreach I got from my peers and friends has been amazing,” Haas told the AP. “At the same time, a friend of mine is not here anymore. . . . There’s just no real way to explain life, why it happens and how it happens. You can’t take tomorrow for granted. You have to enjoy today and prepare for tomorrow. All that said, I still feel like I have to go compete. I can’t just say golf doesn’t matter. That’s what I do. I think that’s what Mark would want.”

Bill Haas was injured in a car accident in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Tuesday evening that left the driver of the vehicle Haas was riding in dead and the driver of the other car involved injured.

The rollover crash involved a Ferrari and a BMW in the 500 block of North Chautauqua Boulevard, just a few miles from Riviera Country Club, where Haas, a six-time PGA Tour winner was scheduled to play in this week’s Genesis Open. The accident took place just before 6:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The driver of the Ferrari, Mark Gibello, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others—one of them the 35-year-old Haas, the other a 50-year-old female from the other vehicle—were taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to the LAFD. Los Angeles Police Department Detective Jeff Fischer told television station KTLA that Haas was the passenger and was “doing OK.“

A third vehicle was also involved when the Ferrari clipped a Toyota FJ SUV just before the crash. According to Fischer, that vehicle was being driven by actor Luke Wilson. He did not sustain serious injury.

The driver of the car was killed. Haas was taken to a hospital but released with no serious injuries.

UPDATED, Wednesday, Feb. 14, 8:35 a.m.: The PGA Tour and Bill Haas’ manager, Allen Hobbs of Players Group Management, released a statement on Wednesday morning:

“Last night in Pacific Palisades, California, Bill Haas was involved in a serious car accident in which the driver—a member of the family with whom Haas and his family were staying for the Genesis Open—was killed. While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and—more importantly—his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time.“

“Bill will withdraw from the Genesis Open and plans to head home to Greenville to recover. He appreciates the support of friends, family and the golf world as a whole, and he has asked for privacy as he processes what has happened.“

Earlier in the morning, Jay Haas, Bill Haas’ father, told the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis that Bill was released from an area hospital with no broken bones, but some pain and swelling in his legs. Jay said that Bill is expected to make a full recovery.

Additional reporting from Brian Wacker.
