Richard Heathcote

With his final-round 58 on Sunday at The Greenbrier, Bryson DeChambeau created the best possible content LIV could have asked for. A few days before that, though, he created an even better bit of content with the ultimate content king in golf, Phil Mickelson.

DeChambeau, who has always been part pro golfer, part long-drive competitor and part YouTube star, among other things, challenged Lefty to a nine-hole match during a practice round at The Old White and had the cameras rolling the whole time. The result, unsurprisingly, was a highly entertaining match featuring plenty of risks, great golf shots, and trash talking, all of it cut down into a 40-minute video you can watch on-demand at your leisure.

Below are some of our favourite highlights from this Bryson (and Anirban Lahiri) v Phil (and Cameron Tringale) duel.

The Terms

Let’s just say Mickelson has done this a few times before, which is why him listing the terms for the match is akin to a waiter at a five-star restaurant listing off every ingredient in each of the specials based off memory alone. One does not simply play a “fun” nine holes with Lefty for some YouTube content. There has to be something on the line, something to get the competitive juices flowing:

The Bryson v Phil match has dropped on YouTube and Phil gets straight into what matters:

“What’s up man?”

“So, what are we playing for?”

This isn’t Phil’s first rodeo ?

This is an awesome watch! https://t.co/jZ37ilRexL pic.twitter.com/BMzViYQLoM

— Flushing It (@flushingitgolf) August 8, 2023

For those confused, Mickelson set up a two-man best ball match for $1,000. “Press for half” means that the team who gets closed out (loses the match with a hole or two, or more left), can start a new match to cut into their losses. If they win that new match, they only pay $500. If they lose, they still pay the original $1,000. The “not the full?” , “Not the full” bit meant that Bryson was asking if you could completely clear the debt by winning the press, to which Mickelson said absolutely not. A fun little addition from Mickelson at the end, for added juice, was that if one of the teams shoots a best-ball 28, the prize doubles to $2,000. “I always max it at that, to keep it friendly,” Mickelson says in the most rich-guy statement ever.

The Production Value

Say what you want about Bryson, but the man, and his team, knows how to do content in 2023, hence the 356K YouTube subscribers. Plenty of cameras out there to capture every shot and, even better, the pre- and post-shot stuff. A moment at around the 7:25 mark features Mickelson quickly going through his pre-shot discussion with his caddie and brother Tim. “Stock 9 is probably a little much, so it’s right between Pelz and stock,” says Lefty. “Stock” is a full 9 iron, while “Pelz” is Mickelson’s low-launch, low-spin shot, which he’s explained before. “Maybe just add the Pelz? I’m in a tiny old divot so it’s sitting down just a bit, so it’ll be a little shorter. So, we’re closer to stock cut.” This is the type of stuff golf fans live for and we so rarely get on a normal broadcast. Add in the great use of shot tracer, the little red and blue circles showing where the ball is landing on tee shots, graphics that are clean and easy to read and follow what’s happening, and the drone to do flyovers before each hole, and that’s really all it takes to make a very quality, watchable product.

Imagine we could hear tee-box conversations like this all the time?

Bryson tells Phil about his new Krank Golf Driver. DeChambeau ended up having a historic week with the big stick.

Watch the full match on YouTube. pic.twitter.com/BnCOLmwBZT

— LIV Golf Nation (@LIVGolfNation) August 7, 2023

About three minutes after this, DeChambeau was walking to the second green and started talking into the camera. “Little amped up right now, hitting it good, driver’s going well. I’m excited man.” We all know what happened next. Cool to see him more or less call his shot a few days earlier.

The Trash Talk

Generally speaking, tour pros — Mickelson included — are terrible at on-camera, forced trash talk. While each edition of The Match has had its moments, you can tell the guys can’t be their off-camera, natural, behind-the-scenes selves. Somehow, though, DeChambeau’s team is able to create an environment where these guys can feel relaxed and fire away. Even something as simple as leaving in the cursing, but bleeping it out, gives it a “OK, this is a real, unscripted thing that’s happening here.” That’s how these guys talk, and trying to hide it or acting like they are all perfect gentlemen is just plain silly and insulting to the viewer.

A match for the ages… Bryson vs Phil is now live on YouTube… ?https://t.co/R4HGZmFtd0 pic.twitter.com/2WOp1F7ljW

— Crushers GC (@Crushers_GC) August 7, 2023

Not long after these drives, Mickelson poured in an opening birdie that he said was going to go in well before even addressing it. “I’m going to play it three inches outside the hole, let it feed in there and get a quick 1-up lead.” Bang. “That feels so good, taking a 1-up lead on them.” Rub it in, baby.

The Golf Shots

When you’re only following four guys, it’s easy to capture every shot, though that somehow still proves difficult to do on certain weeks for certain networks. In this format, you see them all and, obviously, a lot of them are good. Anirban’s near ace at No. 3 was a top highlight, as was him correcting Bryson after Bryson hit a “183-184 shot.” “I was going to say,” Lahiri says, “it’s a 178 shot.” Would have been nice to know before hitting it, partner.”

And then there’s king of the sauce, Mickelson, at No. 6:

The Phil-Bryson video is legitimately awesome, and this was, I think pretty easily, my favorite part. pic.twitter.com/iIvJrOH8k7

— Kyle Porter (@KylePorterCBS) August 8, 2023

“Did it miss? Shoot.” Class.

The Nicknames

Not too much to say here other than there is nothing like a quality nickname. “Camo” for Cameron Tringale makes Cameron Tringale seem way cooler than he is (no offense). “Ban” is a Golf Twitter favourite for Anirban Lahiri. “B” for Bryson is hilariously lazy but I kind of love it. It’s no “Mad Scientist” or “Incredible Bulk,” but those are too long to actually call someone to their face anyway. As for Mickelson, well, he has too many nicknames to count.

The Finale

SPOILERS ahead … Although, did you really think the match was going to end any other way than with Mickelson and Tringale not only winning, but shooting the 28 they needed to double the prize? Anybody who sets the terms in the manner in which Mickelson set them is a lock to win.

The first domino has fallen in what is expected to be a wave of PGA Tour players switching to LIV Golf this week.

Amid much reporting and rumours surrounding Cameron Smith, the world No. 2, it is another Cameron who got things started on Monday, following the conclusion of the PGA Tour Championship.

Young? Nope, it isn’t that one either (how many Camerons play golf these days?) It was Cameron Tringale who was the first to break the not-so-silent silence and reveal he is off to LIV Golf. with a social media post on Sunday evening, while Rory McIlroy was still celebrating his third FedEx Cup triumph.

A multitude of announcements are expected this week, but the first was hardly a bombastic firework. Tringale is a 13-year PGA Tour veteran and has not claimed a title in 338 starts. He announced on Twitter that he is relinquishing his PGA Tour membership for 2023 and will be teeing it up alongside Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed for LIV Golf next week just outside Boston.

Tringale, who is ranked 53 in the world, has won almost $17.5 million during his time on tour, but has never won a PGA pro tournament

“After much reflection, prayer, and conversations with trusted advisors I have made the decision not to renew my Tour membership for next year and join LIV Golf,” Tringale, 35, said in a statement on Twitter.

By Matt Smith
Days after winning the star-studded JP McManus Pro-Am at Adare Manor in Ireland, Xander Schauffele continued his rich vein of form by carding a brilliant 66 at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick to take a two-stroke advantage into the final day of the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open.

The American started the day four shots off the lead but three birdies put him in share and when he picked up another three gains in four holes from the 13th, he led by four.

A bogey-bogey finish took some of the gloss off his round but Schauffele will head into day four at seven-under as he looks for a first Rolex Series win.

“I had pretty much everything going,” Schauffele said. “I was judging the bounces well and making sort of the putts I need to and getting up-and-down when I was missing the green. Six birdies through 16, no complaints, and a tough finish.

“I’ll go to the range, get some better feels going into tomorrow but those are hard finishing holes. So overall, pretty okay with the day.

“I don’t want to think too far ahead but it would be very nice. It would be very special. It just proves that the game can travel, and beating an incredible field, one of the best of the year. I’m just going to focus on what I can do now and not get too carried away.”

Dubai-based Rafa Cabrera Bello is already a Rolex Series champion having won this event in 2017 and he was the closest challenger at five-under, a shot clear of England’s Jordan Smith and American duo Ryan Palmer and Jordan Spieth.

Schauffele arrived in Scotland as a man in form having also won his last start on the PGA Tour at the Travelers Championship after a run of four consecutive top-20 finishes.

Cameron Tringale started the day with a three-shot lead but he stumbled to a two-over 74 despite an eagle on the third

to sit at three under alongside U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, who carded a 70, and American Alex Smalley who went round in 67.

There was then a group of eight players five shots off the lead including Swede Alexander Björk and Dane Rasmus Højgaard.

By Matt Smith
Despite the loaded field at the Genesis Scottish Open, with 14 of the top 15 in the world playing at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, relative surprise first-round leader Cameron Tringale maintained his three-stroke lead with two rounds to go ahead of the 150th Open Championship at St Andrews.

A second-round 72 was good enough for seven-under for Tringale to enjoy a bit of breathing space over fellow Americans Gary Woodland and Doug Ghim, who shot rounds of 72 and 69 respectively.

MORE: The Scottish Open third-round tee times

Tringale began the day three clear of Woodland after producing a course-record-equalling 61 at Renaissance on Thursday, and stretched his advantage after starting his second round at the 10th, picking up shots on the 11th after an approach to four feet and the short 12th by sinking a 26-foot birdie putt.

By the 13th, he was bogey-free for the first 22 holes of his tournament, with 11 pars and 11 birdies, but after a first bogey arrived at the 14th, when he took three from the fringe at the front of the par three before bouncing back with a birdie on the 15th, four dropped shots in a row followed from the 16th.

He birdied the fourth but gave it back at the tricky sixth before parring his final three holes on a much tougher day than Thursday, with the wind continuing to blow on the links in south east Scotland.

A four-strong group sit one shot further behind Woodland and Ghim, and leader Tringale will be looking over his shoulder at the big names waiting to pounce.

Matt Fitzpatrick is among them. The US Open Champion was flawless until bogeys at his last two holes but he signed for a 66.

Xander Schauffele went one better and his 65 was the lowest round of the day. Joining Fitzpatrick and Schauffele on three-under are Jordan Smith — who bagged a new car each for him and his caddie after an ace at the 17th — and Kurt Kitayama.

Tyrrell Hatton’s was on two-under alongside Rafa Cabrera Bello, Rickie Fowler, Rasmus Hojgaard and Joaquin Niemann.

Tringale, who is searching for his maiden victory on both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour in this co-sanctioned tournament, said: “It was definitely more difficult for me today. Yesterday, it seemed pretty easy, and today, it seemed like every hole was a grind to make par.

“So anyway, happy to be done and happy to be off the course and get some rest.

“I just want to keep going out and trying to play the best I can and hopefully get a good low one in tomorrow.

“I mean, the course I think is still gettable, honestly, even in the wind, I just need to play the par-fives a little better, and you know, work on those into the wind shots and I should be all right.”

By Matt Smith
Cameron Tringale shot sensational nine-under 61 to open up a three-stroke lead over a star-studded field — including 14 of the top 15 players in the world – at the first co-sanctioned DP World Tour and PGA Tour event, the Genesis Scottish Open.

The American took advantage of calm conditions early on at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick to equal the course record. HIs closest challenger, major winner Gary Woodland, was three back on six-under in the traditional warm-up to the Open Championship next week.

After four straight pars to settle himself in, Tringale birdied nine of the next 11 holes. Every part of his game seemed to be working as he was in close with most of his approaches and when he was not, a 38-footer dropped at the eighth and another long one found the bottom of the cup at the 11th, before he closed his bogey-free round with three pars.

South African Justin Harding — who was one of the last-minute additions to the field after his reprieve from a ban for joing up with the LIV Golf series — sits in third place, four off the lead, while three players — Rasmus Højgaard, Mito Pereira and Kurt Kitayama — are one shot further back on four-under.

Ewen Ferguson is the leading Scot alongside seven other players on three-under, with major winners Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Justin Rose amongst the group at two under.

“Golf is more fun when the putts are going in, and they were for me today,” said Tringale. “I had a great group of guys to play with and it was relaxed. Everyone more or less had some good shots, and the vibe was good in our group no doubt.

“I think I’m pretty creative when it comes to the shots around the greens and being able to visualise and imagine shots that are not traditional for us in the States. I just think it’s so much fun to have that kind of optionality and to have fun with those shots. There’s probably five ways you can play most shots. It’s fun to be an artist out here. In that respect, I like my chances here.

“Hard to learn when you have such a great day by I definitely learned the last couple days just how strong the wind is, like how much it’s moving the ball, particularly side-to-side and the crosswinds. So that was one thing that I was able to navigate pretty well today. Obviously continue to hope to do more of that.

“Honestly it feels good. I wasn’t thinking about my score. Wasn’t thinking about where I was in the tournament. Like I said, I got off to a slow start. I had to make a couple ten footers for par in the first few holes. I was just focused on playing my game.”

Woodland added: “I played beautifully, drove the golf ball great. Kept it in play. Pace, speed of the greens for me was as good as my face has ever been. Big emphasis this week on trying to get more familiar with that, especially for next week.

“I think the big deal is the pace of greens. They are usually typically so fast back home and over here you can’t get them that fast with the conditions.

“I’ve struggled coming over here. I played the Scottish once before, 2011, so it’s been a long time. But it’s nice to get over here and get familiar with the speed of the greens. That will be a big deal next week as well.”

By Tod Leonard
The narrative predictably fades with time, and though we’re only six months removed from Hideki Matsyama’s historic win in the Masters, it’s probably already forgotten that the Japanese star was on the precipice of a monumental collapse at Augusta National.

Matsuyama led by four heading into the final round in April, lengthened the margin to six shots at the turn, and yet, in a display of nerves served up with some unnecessary bravado, he nearly gave away that green jacket with three bogeys over the last four holes.

Of course, Matsuyama held on to win by one shot over Masters rookie Will Zalatoris, and what we most remember is his tearful celebration and the massive impact his victory, as the first Japanese male to win a major, had at home.

One had to wonder if that back-nine drama at Augusta served as motivation for Matsuyama on an October Sunday in the only PGA Tour event staged in Japan, the Zozo Championship. Facing enormous expectations and support from the 5,000 fans who attended each day at Narashino Country Club outside Tokyo, Matsuyama entered the final round with a one-shot lead—and then it was gone by the 10th hole.

American journeyman Cameron Tringale, quietly determined behind his dark sunglasses to finally earn a PGA Tour win in his 314th start, seized the solo lead with back-to-back birdies at 9 and 10.

Matsuyama’s response was as ferocious as it was beautiful to watch. There was no timidity for the 29-year-old this time as he produced one spectacular answer after another, making three birdies and an eagle over the last eight holes to close with a five-under-par 65.

The last 15 minutes were good theater. With only a two-shot margin standing on the 18th tee, Matsuyama blasted a drive into the short grass and followed with a fairway wood from 241 yards, the ball seeking out the flag and nearly dunking in for an albatross. He then dramatically converted the eagle and thrust both arms in the air.

Matsuyama, whose comments on the win for international reporters were limited to his on-camera interview, said through an interpreter, “It’s just great to be able to play in front of so many fans here in Japan and to be able to play well. I’m thrilled.”

That is clearly an understatement. While Matsuyama won eight times in Japan, including as 2011 victory as a an amateur, this is his first PGA Tour triumph at home. It also eases the disappointment of not earning a medal in the summer’s Tokyo Olympics. Matsuyama now has seven PGA Tour wins, spannning eight years.

Atsushi Tomura
Hideki Matsuyama hits his tee shot on the sixth hole during the final round of the Zozo Championship.

After opening the tournament with a 64, followed by a pair of 68s, Matsuyama finished at 15-under 265, five shots better than runners-up Tringale (69) and Brendan Steele (66). The winning total was one shot off the 16-under showing he had in the inaugural Zozo in 2019, when Matsuyama was second by three shots to Tiger Woods, whose win matched Sam Snead’s all-time tour record with 82 victories.

“I must revenge here next year,” Matsuyama said at the time of that loss. “He is coming back, and I will be here.”

Of course, the return to Japan didn’t happen in 2020 because of the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, and the rematch didn’t have as much juice when the Zozo was repositioned for Southern California. Matsuyama tied for 28th at Sherwood Country Club and it was a hollow besting of Woods, who was well off form and finished 12 shots behind the Japanese native.

Sadly, Woods hasn’t been on hand for either of Matsuyama’s latest milestone wins as he recovers from his car accident in February.

After carrying an “underachiever” label in the early years of his career—despite eight victories on the Japan Tour and five on the PGA Tour entering this season—Matsuyama is drawing fervent admiration and some awe with the completeness of his game. His No. 10 World Ranking will get another boost, and there were loads of style points in the Zozo. Always known as a superb iron player, Matsuyama is a beast with fairway clubs, too. He got to pin-high in two shots on the 608-yard 14th (an eventual par) and produced the spectacular approach into 18.

Putting has been a bugaboo, but when he has weeks like those in the Masters and Zozo, Matsuyama seems unstoppable. The stroke that spurred his back-nine charge on Sunday was a curving 35-foot putt that dropped at perfect speed for birdie and answered Tringale’s brief run at him. He made another nervy 15-footer at the par-4 15th.

“Shoot, I don’t really know his game,” Tringale said afterward. “He seemed a little off just based off watching his reactions and things to shots, but he hung in there. The crowd loved him. He’s very focused, pretty stoic, and it ended up working out for him.”

Tringale, 34, played impressively all week, but in the end he paid for the chances he took in chasing Matsuyama. Tringale spent a lot of cash with bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes, allowing Steele to tie him for second.

“Just continuing to learn, playing, getting myself in more of these positions,” Tringale said. “At least I was in it to some degree on the back nine. And yeah, I felt comfortable. I feel like I keep getting more comfortable and I’m more excited about continuing to be in that position.”

Tringale interacted with the fans all week, saying he was trying to reflect their warmth and positivity. He had one of the best views in the house of Matsuyama’s celebration with the fans who have come to so revere him.

“To really slam the door and hit an incredible second shot and hole the putt [at 18], it was storybook,” Tringale said. “It was cool.”

By Daniel Rapaport
Back in the pre-TV megadeal/pre-Tiger days, only the very best PGA Tour players—the guys who won consistently—could accrue generational wealth. But that was then, and this is now, and guys like Cameron Tringale are much better off for it.

With his T-3 finish Sunday at the Valspar Championship, Tringale earned $407,100—which brought his career earnings on the PGA Tour to $13,743,938. With that payday, he moved into 146th on the all-time money list. More notably, he passed No. 149 Brian Davis to become the player with the most career earnings without a victory in PGA Tour history.

Tringale, 33, amassed his winnings his 299 career appearances, which include three runner-up finishes but none since the 2015 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Davis, for comparison, needed 372 starts to secure his haul.

Tringale’s strong week at Innisbrook Resort outside of Tampa was yet another good finish in what’s been a under-the-radar season. The Georgia Tech graduate now has seven top-20 finishes in his last 10 tour starts, and while he entered the week ranked No. 89 in the World Ranking, Data Golf’s proprietary algorithm had him at No. 32 and he ranked No. 27 in strokes gained overall for the season.

Tringale has made more in his PGA Tour career than multiple-major winners Tom Watson ($11,081,140), Bernhard Langer ($10,759,526) and John Daly ($10,270,681)—and way, way more than the legends of the game whose prime earning days came with a wooden driver in their hands. You know, guys like Jack Nicklaus ($5,734,031).

Ah, to be a consistent PGA Tour player who came up after a certain Mr. Woods. Good work, if you can get it.
