Golf fans will not be in attendance at the LPGA’s second major championship of the year, but those watching the ANA Inspiration from home next week will see an unusual sight in the California Desert.

With temperatures in Rancho Mirage forecasted to range from 105 to 115 (40-46 Celsius) degrees, the LPGA Tour decided on Thursday it will allow caddies to take carts. The news was revealed on the tour’s website.

“We have consulted with our medical team and feel this is the best decision to keep our caddies safe and healthy during this extreme heat,” Heather Daly-Donofrio, the tour’s chief operations officer, said in a memo to players and caddies.

Caddies will still have the option of walking or they can use push carts. Players will be allowed to ride in carts during practice rounds, but will be required to walk during the tournament.

The ANA Inspiration is usually played in April, but was moved to Sept. 10-13 due to COVID-19. To help combat the heat, the LPGA has also purchased 1,500 cooling towels for players, caddies, and staff, and caddies will wear bibs instead of the traditional overalls at the event.

“This was the date that we needed to play the ANA Inspiration and hold a major,” Daly-Donofrio said. “We’re watching the forecast and know it’s going to be hot. And we do not want to put the health of our caddies at risk. Will it look odd? Yes, especially for a major championship. But we’re not going to sacrifice the health of our athletes or caddies for optics.”
