Brooke Henderson gets the 2023 LPGA season off to a hot start with a wire-to-wire four-shot victory

For a week that got off to a chaotic start — a lack of locker access for players at Lake Nona Country Club causing quite the pre-tournament stir — the finish at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions seemed almost serene, Brooke Henderson shooting a closing 70 to cap a four-shot win in the 2023 LPGA season opener.

The 25-year-old Canadian had led after the first three rounds and seemed very much in control of her game en route to her 13th career LPGA title, despite the fact that only the previous weekend she figured out what clubs she was going to be using. Henderson was testing out new TaylorMade equipment that she was going to put in the bag for the first time, signing an endorsement deal that became official on Wednesday.

Beyond testing new equipment, Henderson said she’d spent the off season getting her wisdom teeth out and resting and rehabbing her upper back, which had caused her to withdraw from the Pelican Women’s Championship in early November. At Lake Nona, Henderson said she was pain-free.

“I’m able to swing aggressively and I’m not thinking about it, which is obviously ideal,” Henderson said.

And it showed.

Henderson took the Day 1 lead with a five-under 67, two ahead of Nelly Korda (who coincidentally was also playing her first tournament with TaylorMade clubs in her bag). She followed it with rounds of 66-69 to enter the final round with a three-shot advantage on Korda and Nasa Hataoka.

“Really we never lost too much momentum,” Henderson said. “Just kept chasing birdies and kept taking it further under par.”

Henderson finished at 16-under 262, with Charley Hull and Maja Stark tying for second after each shot three-under 69s. Korda finished in fourth, shooting a Sunday 72 and citing lacklustre iron play as the main reason she wasn’t able to catch Henderson.

“I always try to win a couple times each year, so to get one right way out of the gate takes a little bit of pressure off,” said Henderson, who has won an event in eight of nine seasons she’s been on tour. “I just love playing out here on the LPGA against the best in the world every week. It’s exciting to be in contention and even more exciting to hoist trophies.”

Now, the tour will take a four-week break before heading to Asia, starting the three-tournament swing in Thailand.

The Tournament of Champions is unique in that celebrities play alongside the LPGA Tour players, competing in their own modified stableford tournament. Former professional tennis player Mardy Fish won with 152 points, solidly defeating second-place Mark Moulder who finished with 136 points.

“It’s been a blast. Phenomenal week,” Fish said. “It’s super fun to watch all of them get their ball around and how they score and stuff. They putt lights out; all of them do. So it’s an honor to share the course with them. They’re truly incredible golfers.”

Brooke Henderson, Nelly Korda start strong at LPGA opener, shifting conversation away from locker debacle

After a tumultuous start of the week at the 2023 opener, LPGA players and officials had to be pleased when the news on Thursday finally turned to the competition rather than the lack of player amenities at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

Two of the tour’s biggest stars, Brooke Henderson and Nelly Korda, sit at the top of the leaderboard after the first round at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club.

As the LPGA started its 74th season in Orlando, the initial conversation centred on the those not in attendance rather than the 29 players in the field. Six of the top 10 in the Rolex Rankings are missing. (Lexi Thompson is ranked No. 6 but did not qualify because she hasn’t won since 2019). Most notably absent is 2022 player of the year and World No. 1 Lydia Ko, who got married last month and had planned to start her season a little later. But Rookie of the Year Atthaya Thitikul didn’t enter either. Nor did two major winners from a year ago, Minjee Lee and In Gee Chun.

Then matters deteriorated more when Golfweek reported on Tuesday that lockers were not available for players anywhere this week on site, as was also the case last year. The men’s locker room at Lake Nona had to remain open to the public because of restrooms, according to Golfweek. Players were able to use bathrooms and showers in the designated women’s area but there a not a place for them for store any of their belongings or have their own private space.

“I don’t know why [the LPGA] cancelled the lockers,” Aaron Stewart VP of sports marketing at Hilton Grand Vacations, told Golfweek.

On Wednesday afternoon, 36 lockers were delivered to Lake Nona and set up in the women’s locker-room area. It was an improvement, but still they were in a part of the clubhouse that was not private and was shared with tournament hospitality and VIPs.

“We are always open to player feedback and work with our tournament partners to allocate finite space,” an LPGA statement said.

“It’s unfortunate that that story is kind of being discussed,” said Annika Sorenstam, a 72-time LPGA winner and a member at Lake Nona who is competing in the celebrity portion of the event. “I just want to focus on the game, and hopefully they can sort all the logistics out and we can focus on what’s important.”

Said Korda: “To me this event is so unique in the sense where that stuff doesn’t really bother me. You’re out here competing with different celebrities, former athletes, current athletes.”

True to her word, not much seemed to bother Korda on Thursday as she birdied three of her last eight holes to turn a mediocre round into a four-under 68 and hold second position on the leaderboard. The World No. 2 is looking for vindication after shooting a final-round 75 at Lake Nona a year ago, which dropped her into a tie for fourth place.

Henderson, ranked seventh in the Rolex Rankings, birdied three of her first eight holes and added two more at Nos. 10 and 14 before recording her only hiccup on the afternoon with a bogey at the par-3 17th hole. But she rebounded with birdie on the par-4 18th to claim the lead at five-under 67.

“Yeah, it does feel really good, and to get off to a hot start, that’s always a great feeling,” Henderson said. “Hopefully I can continue it the next three days, a lot of momentum, and lots of birdies. You really need to go low here if the conditions are going to stay as nice as they are.”

Gemma Dryburgh, Charley Hull, Ashleigh Buhai and Wei-Ling Hsu are tied for third place at 69.

TaylorMade bolsters LPGA Tour staff as Brooke Henderson joins Nelly Korda

As rumored for a couple of weeks, Brooke Henderson has formally agreed to a multiyear contract with TaylorMade to play its clubs, ball and use a TaylorMade staff bag. The signing comes on the heels of the company inking another LPGA star, Nelly Korda, earlier in the week. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

A 12-time winner on the LPGA Tour (including a pair of major championships), Henderson is among the LPGA’s elite, currently ranked No. 7 in the world. After switching to TaylorMade’s TP5x ball last year she racked up two victories and 10 top-10 finishes. One of the wins was her second major title at the Amundi Evian Championship.

“Brooke is a terrific athlete and one of the fiercest competitors in the game, and we are excited to see her continue to excel on the course while representing TaylorMade,” said David Abeles, president and CEO for TaylorMade. “She is already one of the most recognizable and successful athletes on the LPGA Tour. The sky is the limit for her to elevate her game and profile within the world of golf.”

Henderson, who has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the world, will have a bagful of TaylorMade equipment in play when she tees it up at the at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions at Lake Nona in Orlando. As for the specific clubs, her woods will be the company’s new Stealth 2 Plus model (driver, fairway woods) with a Stealth 2 rescue club. The irons will be the P790 along with a trio of Milled Grind 3 wedges. The putter is a center-shafted Spider GT model and Henderson will continue to use the TP5x ball.

“As a player, consistency with my driver and control with my irons are key,” Henderson said in a statement released by the company. “I love hitting driver because power is a big part of my game, and Stealth 2 Plus has helped me add distance, which is always great. With the irons and wedges, I could quickly feel how much control I had with each swing. I’m excited for a full season with TaylorMade equipment in the bag and to continue building on what we started with the golf ball.”

At the LPGA 2022 finale, four players are in the hunt for Player of the Year. Here’s how each can win

There’s a lot on the line at this week’s CME Group Tour Championship, specifically a $2 million first-place prize money payout to the winner of the LPGA Tour’s season finale at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida. But for four players, there’s still more at stake, specifically the tour’s Rolex Player of the Year award and the valuable Hall of Fame point it comes with.

While the PGA Tour determines its POY honour via player vote, the LPGA uses a season-long points race with a foursome of golfers still able to claim the top honour. Lydia Ko enters the week with a one-point lead over Minjee Lee, 150-149, and a 20-point lead over Brooke Henderson and Atthaya Thitikul.

The winner of the CME earns 30 points, so if Ko or Lee claims the title this week, they are guaranteed to also win POY. If Henderson or Thitikul wins the CME, they can claim the top player honour if both Ko and Lee finished third or worse.

There are various other scenarios that can play out that would secure the POY award for any of the four, as this graphic from the LPGA shows:

With the points race so tight, it’s natural to ask what happens if there’s a tie: Two players can win player of the year. It actually happened quite recently, in 2017 when So Yeon Ryu and Sung Hyun Park tied for points at the end of the season and shared player of the year honours.

Winning the POY award, of course, helps define a player’s legacy, but it also comes with something more tangible in the form of a point towards a player’s bid to make the LPGA Hall of Fame. Ko, a nine-year tour veteran, currently has 22 HoF points to her credit, with players needing 27 to qualify. Lee has 10, Henderson has 14 and Thitikul has 2.

Only four players met the points total since it was updated in 1999: Annika Sorenstam, who was inducted in 2003; Karrie Webb (2005); Se Ri Pak (2007); and Inbee Park (2016).

Ko has a second chance at winning a Hall of Fame points this week if she can pull out the Vare Trophy, which honours the player who has the lowest scoring average for the season. Ko won the Vare in 2021 and currently leads the category with a 69.049 average, .386 lower than Thitikul. It’s not an insurmountable difference, but would require Ko to have one of her worst performance week in quite a while. If Ko, 25, could win the POY and the Vare, she would be just three points away from qualifying for the LPGA Hall.

Sophia Schubert: The Amundi Evian Championship runner-up actually was a big winner, too

There’s nothing like the excitement of earning your LPGA Tour card for the first time. Sophia Schubert, a former college All-American at Texas and the 2018 US Women’s Amateur champ knows that first-hand, having felt it last fall when she finished the fourth on the Epson Tour money list, securing LPGA playing privileges for 2022.

There’s also, however, nothing like a corollary feeling: the nervousness of trying to keep your card.

Like all Epson Tour graduates, Schubert’s priority ranking required a solid start to her season. But in her first 11 appearances, she missed five cuts, the 26-year-old was sitting 99th in the CME Race to the Globe standings with the top 100 keeping their cards for 2023.

That changed on Sunday, however, as Schubert continued a magical run at the Amundi Evian Championship. Starting the day four shots back of leader Brooke Henderson, Schubert overcame an early bogey and made four birdies in a 10-hole stretch to grab a share of the lead.

Henderson claims major prize at Evian

“I was kind of nervous all day, a little more than yesterday, and Brittany just kept saying, ‘Hey, just take a deep breath. It’s OK. Just keep doing what you’re doing,’” Schubert said. “I think the last few holes coming in actually I just had the sense of like peace, so I just hit every shot and kept going.”

Three pars to close her round got Schubert into the clubhouse with a closing 68 and tied with Brooke Henderson at 16 under par. Schubert’s dream of making her first top-10 finish in an LPGA event a major victory came to an end when Henderson birdied the 18th hole to squeak out a one-stroke victory.

While coming up short of the title, Schubert still jumped to 38th in the CME standings with the runner-up finish, all but guaranteeing her playing privileges in 2023. And cashing in on the $586,262 runner-up payday, Schubert earned seven times as much as she had made all season ($82,796).

There were tears after, but the tears of happiness.

“I’m proud of myself, proud of everyone that’s helped me get to this point,” Schubert said. “It came just short, but I know that I’ll be back, so I’m really happy.”

Brooke Henderson survived a roller-coaster final round and birdied the last hole to win the Amundi Evian Championship by one shot from Sophia Schubert at Evian Resort Golf Club in France.

The 24-year-old Canadian entered the final round with a two-shot lead but struggled out of the gates, dropping a shot at her first hole and then making a four-putt double bogey on the sixth, to lose her outright lead. However, after sinking a birdie putt on the seventh hole and then making the turn in two-over-par, Henderson fought hard on the back nine to grind out the win and earn the first prize cheque, worth $1 million.

World’s best ready to fight it out for 2022 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open

The cream of women’s golf will descend on Dundonald Links this week for the 2022 Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open, with the 144-woman field featuring eight of the world’s top 10 — along with 22 major winners — ready to battle it out at the $2 million event.

In the strongest line up to date, 30 countries are represented in the field, 45 LPGA winners with a haul of 194 titles and 28 Solheim Cup players with 74 appearances between them, and three past champions as Ryann O’Toole returns to Scotland to defend her first LPGA title.

The aforementioned 22 major winners boast a total of 39 major championships, including Brooke Henderson, who won the Amundi Evian Championship in France last week.

Joining Henderson at Dundonald Links is 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship winner Brooke Henderson, three-time major winner Anna Nordqvist, world no.8 and winner of the 2014 Evian Championship Hyo Joo Kim, Hannah Green, winner of the 2019 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and winner of the 2021 Chevron Championship Patty Tavatanakit.

There are 22 Brits in the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open field and among the home hopes are major champion Georgia Hall and Solheim Cup star Charley Hull.

“I am really looking forward to playing,” said Hall. The next month is going to be a very busy time on the schedule, but I can’t wait to kick off the two Scottish events at Dundonald Links (the AIG Women’s Open is at Muirfield next week). I love the challenges of links golf, and last time we played here in 2017 I finished in the top-10 so I am excited to see how the club and course has changed over the last few years”.

After a two-year Covid inflicted hiatus, fans will be welcomed back to the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open for the first time since 2019. As well as being able to watch the best of women’s golf take on the challenges of Dundonald Links, there will be plenty of activities for all the family in the Fan Zone, from trying out new Golf technology and sport challenges to enjoying live music and local flavours.

Amundi Evian Championship: Brooke Henderson didn’t make it easy on herself, but still wins second major

A year ago, Jeonguen Lee6 saw a five-shot final-round lead slip away at the Amundi Evian Championship, the South Korean ultimately losing the tournament in a playoff to Minjee Lee. On Sunday, at the Evian Resort Golf Club, it looked like history was repeating itself.

Brooke Henderson opened with rounds of 64-64-68 and had a two-shot edge, but started Day 4 in France with a bogey on the first hole and a double-bogey on the sixth (thanks to a four-putt). Suddenly, the leaderboard surged around her, the 24-year-old Canadian needing to fight from behind on the back nine. But that’s where this year’s drama changed. With birdies on three of her final five holes, including a 12-footer on the par-5 18th, Henderson rallied to win by one shot.

“It was definitely an interesting day. Not the start that I wanted, but I stayed pretty patient, as patient as I could under those circumstances,” said Henderson, who ultimately finished with an even-par 71 on Sunday for a 17-under 267 total. “Then going into the back nine, you know, the saying is that majors are won on the back nine on Sunday, so I just tried to keep that frame of mind, and knew I was still in it if I could have a solid back.”

While experienced players such as major champions Nelly Korda, Lydia Ko and Jin Young Ko all made charges on Sunday, it was the No. 283 player in the world who became Henderson’s greatest challenger. Sophia Schubert, a 26-year-old LPGA rookie from Tennessee, was having an out-of-nowhere performance at the Evian.

In a season where she had missed five cuts in 11 starts, Schubert was cruising around the Evian Resort Golf Club. A closing three-under 68 allowed the former University of Texas All-American to finish at 16-under. She then had to watch to see if it was enough to force a playoff with Henderson, at 16-under herself when teeing off on the reachable-in-two par-5 18th.

Henderson’s tee shot found the left rough, causing her to lay-up back in the fairway with her second. She hit her approach from 107 yards to about 12 feet, the same distance Schubert missed a birdie try from moments earlier.

The putter seemed to be the issue for Henderson on Sunday. Despite hitting 15 greens, the No. 10 ranked player in the world had 34 putts. But Henderson buried her final putt, making all of those she misses obsolete.

Afterward, Henderson looked a little shocked, mouthing what looked like ‘Oh my God,’ to her sister, Brittany, who’s also her caddie. The win, her second in 2022 (to go with the LPGA Classic in June) is Henderson’s 12th on the LPGA Tour, further cementing her as the most accomplished Canadian golfer in history. And it was her second major, to go with a win at the 2016 KPMG Women’s PGA, making her the first Canadian golfer, male or female, to be a multiple major winner.

The financial spoils for the victory were nice, too. The record $1 million winner’s cheque pushes Henderson past the $10 million threshold for her career, making her just the 24th player in LPGA history to break eight figures.

“In 2016, winning the first major changed my life,” Henderson said. “My world ranking shot up, and I just received a ton more attention from fans and media. It also made me feel like I really belonged out here and that I could contend for big, major championships and compete against the best in the world, which is an amazing feeling,” Henderson said. “It has been a long time, and getting off to a fast start early this week, it just felt great to be at the top of the leaderboard at a major. I just tried to take that excitement as far as I could.”

It has been a long time, but Henderson said this one was definitely worth the wait.

Henderson clings on to Amundi Evian Championship lead as major race heats up

A few missed birdie chances from close range cost Henderson the chance to take a big lead into the final round at Evian Resort Golf Club.

However, at 17-under, the 24-year-old from Ontario is still well placed to capture her second major.

After signing for a three-under 68, she said: “It was wasn’t as good as the first two days, but I really hung in there. I made some clutch par saves on the back nine, which felt nice.

“There were not as many birdies on the card. I felt like the course was playing a little bit tougher for me today. Hopefully I’ll go out tomorrow and continue to ball strike pretty well and hopefully make some putts.”

On her game plan for the final round, she added: “I think it’s important where you’re placing the ball off the tee and into the greens. Hopefully I can get a good strategy together tonight and hopefully I’ll be able to hit the shots where I need to.

“It can be a very tricky course if you start miss-hitting shots. If you can keep it in the right areas, then you can make some birdies.”

Ryu, targeting a third major title following on from her victories in the 2011 US Women’s Open and 2017 ANA Inspiration, carded eight birdies against two bogeys in her third round of six-under-par 65.

The 32-year-old wornd No. 51 will be able to keep a close eye on the leader in the final pairing and could be a major threat, but there are plenty of skilled players lining up in the groups behind.

Sophia Schubert from the United States is two strokes back in third place and will play alongside Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who leads the European challenge in a tie for fourth with Korean Sei Young Kim on 12-under-par.

After her third consecutive round of 67, Ciganda said: “I think four-under, no bogeys, that’s always a great round. I would have liked to have made a couple more birdies at the end with the two par-fives, but I made some good saves. I didn’t take advantage today of the par-fives.”

“I don’t think it’s easy to make putts here. I was just trying to be patient out there. I’m playing good, so I think I’m hitting good enough shots that I’ll give myself some opportunities out there.”

The 2021 Race to Costa del Sol winner, Atthaya Thitikul, is tied for sixth on 11-under alongside Nelly Korda, Hyo Joo Kim, Jin Young Ko and Charley Hull.

Back-to-back 64s have Brooke Henderson leading the way from Nelly Korda at Amundi Evian Championship

To go out on Day 1 of a major and shoot a 64 and you are usually in good shape for the weekend. To repeat the feat on the Friday and you have one eye on the trophy. That is where Canada’s Brooke Henderson finds herself at Evian-les-Bains as she takes a three-stroke lead into Saturday’s third round over world No. 3 Nelly Korda at the Amundi Evian Championship.

The 24-year-old Henderson from Smiths Falls, Ontario, carded eight birdies and only one bogey at the Evian Resort Golf Club, finishing with with three straight birdies to finish on a 36-hole total of 128, 14-under-par.

“It feels really nice to get off to a fast start in a major championship. It feels like it’s been a while. To get it this far under par is really awesome,” said Henderson, playing for her second major championship title this week, six years on from her first at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship in 2016.

Korda sits alone in second on 11-under-par after the 23-year-old from Florida shot a superb four-under-par 67.

She saved her best until last, with two mighty blows to the 18th green setting up an eagle putt from two-and-a-half feet, which she converted. Having saved par from the water in the first round, after removing her shoes and socks and standing ankle deep in the lake protecting the green, she decided that she would rather go long and used a 5-hybrid from 192 yards.

“It was nice, stress-free,” said former world No. 1. “Yesterday I was struggling with the ball below my feet. I was kind of hitting it out right I told myself, I’m going to aim a little bit more left, and I did actually fade it out to the right, and thank God I aimed a little left and it just turned out perfect.”

Korean pair Sei Young Kim and So Yeon Ryu are tied for third on nine-under.

The 2021 Race to Costa del Sol winner, Atthaya Thitikul, who finished fifth in the Amundi Evian Championship last year, is tied for fifth on eight-under-par with the 2014 champion, Hyo-Joo Kim of Korea, American pair Andrea Lee and Sophia Schubert, Spain’s Carlota Ciganda and Perrine Delacour of France.
