Henrik Stenson with his Ryder Cup captain replacement Luke Donald

Henrik Stenson and Paul Casey are reportedly among the latest stars set to resign from the DP World Tour — taking the total of high-profile LIV Golf players either having already walked away from the old European Tour or about to in the immediate future to nine.

Last week, four long-standing members — Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Richard Bland and Ian Poulter — quit the circuit with the threat of incremental fines of up to $630,000 for DP World Tour card holders who continue to participate on the LIV Golf Circuit.

Now The Telegraph has reported that Swede Stenson, England’s Casey, Germany’s Martin Kaymer, and South African duo Charl Schwartzel and Brandon Grace are set to follow suit.

Paul Casey

All DP World Tour members who have competed on LIV Golf since its inaugural event in London last June are in breach of the tour’s tournament release regulation and so are liable to the sanctions imposed on members in breach of that rule.

Following the DP World Tour’s fine and suspension of 17 members who moved to the new circuit last June for the inaugural LIV Golf event in London, a group of players led by Adrian Otaegui, Poulter and Justin Harding filed an appeal against the DP World Tour. The LIV members were granted an injunction to enter the Genesis Scottish Open, pending a full hearing before the arbitration panel in February, which voted in favour of the DP World Tour.

The move to quit the DP World Tour means LIV Golfers will not face any more fines in the future for continuing to compete on the new series.

Martin Kaymer

However, it also rules out any future Ryder Cup participation for the European contingent, with Stenson — who was stripped of the Team Europe captaincy after he switched — Kaymer and Casey all having featured prominently in the biennial tournament along with Poulter, Garcia and Westwood.

New Ryder Cup skipper Luke Donald recently admitting his sadness at the departure of the initial trio of Westwood, Poulter and Garcia. “It is a shame,” he said. “They’ve got a lot of history when it comes to the Ryder Cup. Ultimately this is their choice and I wish them well.”

Rory McIlroy, a Ryder Cup teammate of all the European players, echoed that sentiment: saying: “I think it’s a shame that you’ve got the highest points score ever in the Ryder Cup [Garcia] and two guys that, when they look back on their career, that’s probably going to be at least a big chunk of their legacy is the roles that they have played in the Ryder Cup for Europe [Westwood and Poulter] … But at the end of the day that was their choice.”

By Kent Gray
After capturing the ‘Major of the Middle East’, Paul Casey’s name is again firmly back in the ‘best player not to win (an actual) major’ conversation. It’s a good thing then that the 43-year-old Englishman feels like a kid again.

With a closing 70 full of split fairways, flushed irons and quality putting when there was just the faintest hint of late Sunday afternoon wobble, Casey added his name to the quality roll call of OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic champions.

With a 17-under total of 271, the world No. 27 snared the Dallah by four strokes from South African Brandon Stone while Scottish lefty Robert MacIntyre was left to settle for third at -12 after a brutal afternoon on the Majlis’ unusually tricky greens.

Win number 15 on the European Tour ?@Paul_Casey | #ODDC pic.twitter.com/w0MSRNqBXr

— The European Tour (@EuropeanTour) January 31, 2021

Casey’s 15th European Tour win saw him edge ahead of luminaries such as Rory McIlroy and Greg Norman and up alongside Thomas Bjorn and Padraig Harrington in joint 16th place on the Old World circuit’s list of all-time winners. He also joined McIlroy, Ernie Els and Henrik Stenson atop the list of most wins in the Middle East. His fourth title, after wins in Bahrain (2011) and Abu Dhabi (2007 and 2009), is perhaps the sweetest of them all.

“It’s very, very special mate, yeah it’s an unbelievable roster isn’t it,” Casey said when reporter Tim Barter reminded the Arizona-based champion his name would soon be inscribed alongside those of Ballesteros, Woods, Els, Garcia and McIlroy.

“I’m all emotional with wins, but with this one, you said it, this one is such a prestigious event, the history which is behind you, and I can see it from here with amazing winners, is basically a Who’s Who in world golf. Dubai have given so much to golf, European Tour golf in general and across the globe.

“And 15 wins is pretty cool. I wanted 15. The Porsche European Tour victory in 2019 is the last, and this is 15 and this is an iconic event, so I’m so happy.”

RELATED: Paul Casey and Robert MacIntyre primed for Dallah doozy

Likely to be around 15 in the OWGR come Monday, suddenly Casey suddenly finds himself in contention to represent Team GB at the summer Olympics if the Tokyo Games go ahead, a big ‘if’ admittedly. He’s also taken a huge jump in the Race to Dubai (to third) and Ryder Cup rankings to the point where he is looking a lock for September’s matches at Whistling Straits even if he says there’s “still a lot of golf to be played”.

The elephant in the room remains a major but his 21st worldwide win on Sunday is proof enough that Casey has the effortless power, and undying ambition, to convert in a big someday soon.

With a win this early in the season, what do you think you are capable of going forward?

Warren Little/Getty Images
Casey acknowledges the gallery after his gritty par save on 16th during the final round on Sunday.

“I think a lof of good stuff, honestly I feel like I’ve regained my youth. I mean that sincerely and, yeah, I’m so happy,” said Casey who has 10 top-10s in major championships including a runner-up finish to Collin Morikawa as recently as last August’s PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

But the majors are for later. Right now, Casey is in a happy and very fortunate place.

“Seve. My heros,” Casey started as he surveyed the names on the Dallah. “Yeah, it’s one of the coolest trophies in golf, isn’t it. There are smaller, there are more important, but it’s one of the iconic trophies without a doubt, and yeah, look, being in the winner’s circle always feels amazing.

“I think the whole of 2020 has been very strange, still is very strange, and I’m very, very thankful to be able to do what I do and still be out here playing golf. We had some fans this week. They were amazing. Obviously not a lot because we’re still in the middle of a pandemic, but look, myself, just like a lot of other people, it’s not been enjoyable. So to have something like this happen, hopefully, that can bring happiness to other people, as well.”

Casey is especially chuffed for caddie John McLaren who he revealed is in the sixth year of a five-year commitment to get the Englishman back into the top echelon of world golf.

“I can’t thank him enough because he’s came back for a sixth. I said to him, come back only if you want to and we talked it out, and like I said to you earlier this week, I have the biggest respect for that guy. He’s my mate more than he is my caddie.”

For a good portion of Sunday, it looked as though Casey might challenge Bryson DeChambeau’s record for the biggest winning margin at Emirates Golf Club – seven strokes set two years ago. He led by as many as five shots courtesy of solid shot-making and another piece of wedge wizardry when he outrageously holed out for a birdie on the par-3 4th from lush rough.

The irons shots he struck into 13 to set up a two-putt birdie and into 14 were sublime but not half as important as the gutsy 13-footer he holed for bogey when catastrophe loomed from short-sided hay on the 15th, nor a similarly gritty “clean up” par on 16 after his drive found another lush lie.

Warren Little/Getty Images

But Casey was not to be denied, not after MacIntyre cruelly watched an 18-inch putt go in and then horse-shoe out on the 8th in a horror run for four successive bogeys that put the kybosh on what was shaping as a private match for the Desert Swing title.

Talking of matches, we noticed that embrace with European Ryder Cup captain Pádraig Harrington who hung around after his impressive tie for 6th. Do you think that’s cemented your place on the team for Wisconsin?

“No, no, no. There is a long way to go. There is a lot of golf to be played,” he said. “I was quoted this week as saying that Paris [2018] might be the greatest golfing experience I ever had. I think I can take the “might” out. It was the greatest golfing experience I’ve ever had. And I would love to be part of his team, and if I’m not playing, I’d still love to be part of that team and help.

“Yeah, Ryder Cups are something special. There’s a long way to go, though. Got a lot of golf to play and need to keep this form up.”

On the evidence of this week, It’s going to be a lot of fun if he does.

By Joy Chakravarty
Brandon Stone has won one of the European Tour’s biggest tournaments – the 2018 Scottish Open – but reckons it would be extra special to win the OMEGA Dubai Desert Classic on a golf course he absolutely loves.

The South African, who has also won the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the SA Open back home in 2016, made five birdies and an eagle in a round of six-under par 66. He is now at 13-under par total, one behind Robert MacIntyre and two behind leader Paul Casey.

“I think you obviously look at the previous winners, but you also look at the venue,” said the 27-year-old from Rustenberg when asked how special would it be for him to win the tournament.

“The Emirates Golf Club has an illustrious history on its own; the location itself is special. Doesn’t matter who was playing here; when you stand up on the 8th tee box and you look at that tee shot with the skyline in the distance, it’s very unique. You don’t get that anywhere else in the world.

RELATED: Robert MacIntyre has learned to hit it, find it and hit it again (very, very well)

“The number of illustrious winners that have won here before is obviously incredible, but at the same time the golf course has its own history and the event itself has that prestige around it.

“So you always want to be playing against the best players, but you want to be playing on the best courses and winning the best tournaments, and I’ve given myself the opportunity to do that.”

Stone was pleased with his efforts on Saturday.

“Just played solid golf all the way around to be fair. Drove the ball really nicely and managed to hole some nice putts on the front nine, which always gets the adrenaline and momentum going,” added Stone, now ranked 205th in the world.

“I felt very calm and collected all day and hit the ball fantastically well. Felt like I was putting for birdie on almost every hole, so whenever that’s the case, you’re always going to figure like there’s a low number in you.”

Any golfer who has ever struck a putt too hard has the same, immediate reaction: “hit a house!” Translation? Please, just hit the hole so the ball doesn’t roll 15 feet past.

RELATED: Tommy Fleetwood’s quarantine was a piece of golf heaven

Tour pros are no different, though their chances of hitting the hole are much higher. South Africa’s Brandon Stone found himself in this exact situation on Wednesday during the opening round of the British Masters at Close House GC in England.

Stone, who was working on a one under round on the back nine, blasted a birdie putt that was tracking toward the cup. The problem was it was going far too fast, but fortunately for him the hole got in the way, as his ball hit the back of the cup and popped out. Stone’s reaction was absolutely priceless:

Come for the pacey putt, stay for @BrandonMStone's reaction ?#BetfredBritishMasters #GolfForGood pic.twitter.com/RN32crcuD9

Is there a pool noodle in that cup? Little pandemic golf joke for ya.

All kidding aside, Stone’s facial expression could not sum up that situation any better. Sure, it would have been nice if it miraculously dropped, but he knows he got away with one. If the hole didn’t get in the way, that ball rolls almost 10 feet by. Instead, he cleaned up the tap-in and sprinted to the next tee, we assume.

By John Huggan
On a packed final-round leaderboard—six players began the day tied for first—it was always going to take something special to break out of the sizeable throng gathered at or near the apex of the Oman Open.

Or somethings special. Which is how it turned out. Even before they embarked on what would eventually be a three-hole playoff for the title, Brandon Stone and Sami Valimaki both made lengthy putts for unlikely 3s at the 465-yard par-4 72nd hole. Those birdies took the South African and the young Finn (playing in only his sixth European Tour event) to 13 under par, one shot clear of Frenchman Adrien Saddier. As many as 13 others finished within five shots of the playoff pair.

Pars each on the aforementioned 18th in the first two playoff holes, necessitated a third to settle the destination of the first-place cheque. And it was Stone, a three-time European Tour winner, who blinked, pulling his approach left of the green, then failing to get up-and-down to match Valimaki’s solid two-putt par. That 4 was, in fact, only the new champion’s sixth par in his last 15 holes; his two-under 70 in the final round over the Al Mouj Golf course included seven birdies, three bogeys and a double-bogey 6 at the ninth that had appeared to end his victory chances.

Two more bogeys would follow for Valimaki, who only 18 months ago was doing his national service in the Finnish army, but four birdies more than made up for those mistakes. More crucially, none of the principal challengers could match his two-under-par aggregate over the closing four holes. Where most were faltering, he was flourishing.

“It’s awesome,” was Valimaki’s understandably almost speechless initial reaction. “There are not many words to say, it’s unbelievable. After the ninth hole, when I made a double, I knew that the 10th hole is good and I had to make a birdie on that. I didn’t make a really good par on 11 and after that bogey I felt like, ‘OK, this is gone.’ But then I just grinded, made three birdies and on the last, an awesome birdie.”

While the field he had to beat in Oman was far from the best the European Tour has to offer—not one of the 17 men who finished in the top 10 ranked inside the world’s top 100 and only three were inside the top 150—Valimaki’s progress up the professional ladder has so far been remarkably swift. Following the example of former World No. 1 Martin Kaymer, the 21-year-old was last year a four-time winner on what was the Germany-based EPD Tour and is now the Pro Golf Tour, a feat that earned him promotion to last year’s European Challenge circuit. He got his European Tour card at Q school last fall, and a T-7 finish at the recent Vic Open in Australia hinted at a burgeoning potential that has been further underlined with this victory.

By Christopher Powers
Thomas Pieters has been known to run a little hot on the golf course, often taking his anger out on his clubs. Depending on how you view it, that could make him an incredibly compelling or incredibly dangerous candidate for the European Tour’s “Chase The Ace” challenge, which has brought world-class players to their knees in the past.

For those unaware, the “Chase The Ace” challenge is a recurring video series from the Euro Tour in which they give a tour pro 500 attempts to make a hole-in-one on a shortish par 3. Three players have tried the challenge so far, and only one, England’s Andy Sullivan, was able to make an ace (on his 230th try). The other two, Edoardo Molinari and Brandon Stone, failed to put one in the hole while slowly going insane in the process.

Pieters became the latest victim in what is easily the most depressing video of the four instalments. Seriously, this was hard to watch:

We gave @Thomas_Pieters 500 balls to see if he could make a hole-in-one.

Here’s what happened….#ChaseTheAce pic.twitter.com/OOSayu0vug

— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) October 29, 2019

I realize how silly it sounds to say that I feel “sad” for a pro who can consistently hit the ball that close to the hole over and over, but man was that sad, mostly because he wanted to make one so badly. As the beginning of the video shows, Pieters has obviously made it a point to work on controlling his temper, which he apparently did a great job of during his victory at the Czech Masters this past August. But even the calmest of humans is bound to crack if you give him 500 tries to do something and he can’t do it.

Pieters might not have done what he went there to do, but nobody can say he wasn’t entertaining:

This was so good. “Everybody expects me to get mad. … not gonna happen.” A few moments later …

“Just stay calm. It’s just golf,” he said after the club throw, following that up with a “F&%$” after his next shot. Oh, yeah, that’s the good stuff.

Look, he’s trying his best to keep it together, which should be commended. For those of us who sometimes have temper tantrums on the course (guilty), it’s hard to just flip on a dime and become calm, cool, collected guy. Pieters might get there, but not without a few bumps along the way. Frankly, we hope he still lets a little rage out every now and then, because the club-snap videos are tremendous content.

Bellerive Country Club’s 16th hole is a brute of a par 3, yet it found itself under an aerial assault late on Saturday afternoon at the PGA Championship. First Matt Wallace made a hole-in-one on the 237-yard hole with a tucked-right pin, a feat so surprising that CBS’ Verne Lundquist called him Mike Wallace. But a little later, Brandon Stone did everything but make an ace on the hole.

Watch and listen as Stone’s shot hits on the front edge of the hole and clangs — and we mean CLANGS — off the flagstick before winding up about six feet away:

Doesn’t get any closer than this. (Sound on ?)#PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/LpqXAq2Gg1

The shot did such damage to the hole that playing partner Thomas Pieters grabbed his phone to snap a photo:

Unfortunately for those involved — and those playing in the groups behind — the crater caused a bit of a delay. And when play resumed, Stone missed his birdie attempt to walk away with an extremely disappointing par. At least he’ll probably wind up on Thomas Pieters’ Instagram account later.

Brandon Stone reacts to his missed birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have given him a 59 in the final round of the 2018 Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at Gullane Golf Course.
By John Huggan
GULLANE, Scotland — It’s safe to say not many saw this one coming. When Brandon Stone arrived in Gullane for the Aberdeen Standard Investment Scottish Open, the 25-year-old South African was languishing in 144th place on the 2017-’18 Race to Dubai. Nine times in 16 starts the former University of Texas star (where he was NCAA freshman of the year in 2013) had failed to make it to the weekend, his best finish a still mediocre T-22 in Morocco back in March. All in all, pretty ugly stuff for a man good enough to win on the European Tour in each of the last two seasons, both times in his homeland.

Ah, but as the old saying goes, every professional golfer is only one week away from turning his fortunes around. And that, with bells on, is just what Stone did over four eventually historic days on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth.

After an opening-round even-par 70, the new champion finished with an enormous flourish in reaching 20-under-par total and earning €999,246. Stone’s 10-under-par 60—eight birdies and an eagle—is a new course record for a course that doesn’t actually exist (the 7,110-yard composite lay-out comprises 16 holes from the Gullane No. 1 course and two from the No. 2). And, way more significantly, represents only the 18th round of 60 ever shot on the European Tour circuit. If only that eight-foot putt for one last birdie on the 18th had not missed narrowly on the left side …

“It’s incredible,” said Stone, who will jump from 371st in the World Rankings to just outside the top 100. “If I’m going to be brutally honest, I had no idea what my score was until I walked on the 13th green. It was just one of those days where everything went well, hit it great, holed some beautiful putts. And obviously to walk away with 60 having missed an eight-footer was a slight disappointment, but I won’t really complain.

“Walking on the 18th green, I didn’t even know what the scores were. My caddie had banned me from looking at any scoreboards. Every time my eyes would wander he would grab my attention. But on the 18th green, I took a look. I was like, Oh, here we go. I looked at him and he looked at me. I said, ‘OK, cool, you read it because I’m not going to try and read this one.’ I actually hit it over his mark and he criticized my lack of pace. That’s why it went a little bit low.”

Stone reacts after his putt for a 59 on the 18th came up just short on Sunday. (Kenny Smith – PA Images)

Others were almost as pleased with their week’s work. Runner-up Eddie Pepperell, already a winner in Qatar earlier this year, was one of those, despite the four-shot gap that ultimately separated first from second. Hampered the last couple of months by a nagging wrist injury, the 27-year-old Englishman added to his growing reputation with a seven-birdie 64 that was eventually undone by a three-putt bogey on the penultimate hole. Seconds later, Stone holed from long range for eagle on the previous green.

“On the whole, I hit the ball great,” said Pepperell, who, along with Stone and Jens Dantorp of Sweden, claimed one of the three exempt spots available for this week’s Open Championship at Carnoustie. “I felt I did everything well today. I’m good at keeping the ball down. Which makes me good in the wind. I also have a strong 3-wood in the bag, one I’ve utilized in the same way Henrik Stenson has done.

“In certain ground conditions, I can hit that club as far as my driver. It doesn’t fly as far but it rolls more. So I have two options to get the ball in play. I’m definitely more artistic than scientific. And that is how I’m playing golf this year. I’m matching my golf with my character. I got away from that for a while – too much emphasis on technique fried my brain.”

Pepperell’s pleasure was mirrored—and even exceeded—by Trevor Immelman, who finished tied for third with American Luke List and Dantorp. Very much a part-time player these days, this was the 38-year-old former Masters champion’s first venture into anything like contention in many years. In nine previous European Tour starts this season he had failed to record a top-30 finish.

As ever, there are two opposing ways to look at a week where the scoring was so spectacularly low. On the one hand, it is but one more indication of how a very good, “traditional” course that is one rung below great is today no match for the modern-tour player. Take the final round, one played in what might be described as a stiff breeze. As many as 44 players broke par and 18 shot 67 or lower. Remarkable stuff. But also a tad depressing for those who wish to see courses played in the way they were originally designed to be played. Short-iron approaches after tee shots struck with something less powerful than a driver was the order of the day.

Then again, for those who see golf, at its best, as an art form rather than the science it is fast becoming at the highest level, this event was a breath of sea air. On a fast-running links like Gullane, numbers mean almost nothing. When downwind wedges are flying, bouncing and rolling out to something beyond 200 yards and upwind 4-irons are doing approximately the same, yardages become irrelevant.

So, to an extent, does the fairways-hit statistic. On a long par 4 into the wind—one barely reachable in two shots—a decided edge can be gained from driving into the semi-rough rather than onto the fairway. With longer grass likely to come between clubface and ball at impact, a “flier” can be used to great advantage, as long as the distant green is open in front—which is invariably the case in Scotland—and so accessible to a shot landing short and running up to the putting surface. In a world where shot-making is fast becoming a lost art, that at least was refreshing.

European captain Thomas Bjorn and three players earmarked to help the Dane win back the Ryder Cup in September headline a “field of champions” for the 3rd annual Gary Player Invitational in Abu Dhabi later this month.

Bjorn will tee it up at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club on Jan. 29 alongside Dubai-based Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello, Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick (both members of the beaten 2016 team at Hazeltine) and reigning British Masters champion Paul Dunne (Ireland). Cabera Bello, Fitzpatrick and Dunne helped Bjorn’s Europeans rally to a 14-10 win over Asia in the EurAsia Cup in Kuala Lumpur earlier today in a positive precursor to the Ryder Cup.

Also confirmed for the 18-hole Gary Player Invitational are the Black Knight himself, D+D Real Czech Masters champion Haydn Porteous, Made in Denmark winner Julian Suri, 2016 South African Open winner Brandon Stone, Portugal Masters champion Lucas Bjerregaard and Jordan Smith, winner of the Porsche European Open.

Cabrera Bello’s sister Emma will also play alongside fellow Ladies European Tour players Olivia Cowan, Carly Booth and Henni Goya. Joining the pros will also be the UAE’s top amateur, Rayhan Thomas, and entertainers Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy (pictured above).

The Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs as the charity set to benefit from the day of “#golfandgiving”

“We are thrilled to be coming back to Abu Dhabi and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club to kick off 2018 with what will be a field of some of the super new golfing talent in the world,” said Player.

“As illustrated by our field of champions, including the UAE’s very own Rayhan Thomas, the game continues to evolve and strengthen in the UAE which is truly fantastic to see. This, combined with raising money for those in need will make for a fantastic event for all.”

Held in conjunction with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, under the Patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the 2018 Gary Player Invitational at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is the only Middle Eastern stop in the global series. The series has helped The Player Foundation raise more than $64 million for charities worldwide and plays a key role in helping the foundation work towards its goal of raising $100 million by 2025.

“While the event itself is both engaging and entertaining, it is made all the more worthwhile knowing that funds raised will stay in Abu Dhabi and support the Zayed Higher Organization in all the great work that they do for the community,” said Player.

Supporters include Etihad Airways, TDIC, the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi (host of the post tournament gala dinner), SAP and Rolex. New sponsors confirmed for 2018 include Abu Dhabi Ports and Al Masaood Automobiles.
