Jin Young Ko is congratulated by Da Yeon Lee after winning the BMW Ladies Championship and winning the 200th LPGA title by a South Korean woman in tour history.

By Keely Levins
There was a lot going on at the BMW Ladies Championship for Jin Young Ko. The 26-year-old from Seoul was the talk of the tournament during the first round, where a round in the 60s would’ve meant she’d broken Annika Sorenstam’s record for most consecutive competitive sub-70 rounds. Ko’s one-under 71 wasn’t enough, leaving her to set for a tie with Annika at 14 straight. Still, there was the opportunity that if a South Korean won the BMW, she’d notch the 200th win for her home country on the LPGA Tour. The pressure on Ko, the highest-ranked South Korean player, was only increased by the fact that all of this was happening in South Korea, her home country.

But Ko was able to put the pressure aside and do what she does best: hit a staggering number of greens (62 of 72 for the week at LPGA International Busan) and go low on Sunday. Ko shot a final-round 64, which put her and 54-hole leader Hee Jeong Lim (68) in a tie at 22 under. Ko bested Lim on the first playoff hole with a birdie. It was her first playoff triumph and the third time in Ko’s career that she won an event after starting the final round four shots behind. The win was Ko’s 11th on the LPGA Tour.

“This is a tremendous honour,” Ko said. “And I think it’s very fortunate that I am the player, the 200th-win player, and I actually think that it’s really fortunate that it was an event held in Korea as well. And obviously being the player of the 200th win of the Korean player was not a goal that I was working toward. It just happens so that I was really focused and I did my best, and this came along. So I’m very happy and satisfied.”

The win at the BMW is Ko’s second win in her last two starts after taking the title at the Cognizant Founders Cup and her fourth in 2021, the most of any player. A week prior to Founders Cup, Ko finished T-2 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic. It shouldn’t come as a surprise with those finishes that after the BMW, Ko is projected to regain her spot as the No. 1 player in the world, overtaking Nelly Korda, who was not in the field at the BMW.

This win comes with other accolades for Ko. There are two events left on the LPGA Tour calendar, but Ko has clinched the Leaders Top 10 competition and the $100,000 prize that goes to the player who finishes the season with the most top-10 finishes. Her win also puts her ahead of Korda on the Rolex Player of the Year points list. She leads by 15 points.

Ko’s recent success comes after what was a tumultuous early season. She wasn’t happy with her swing and said her game lacked “flow.” Then, her grandmother fell ill. Due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, she wasn’t able to be with her family in South Korea. Instead, she was preparing for and playing in the ANA Inspiration and the U.S. Women’s Open.

“During the week of ANA, I think I slept maybe three to four hours a day because I was crying so much,” Ko said. “I came to think What’s the use of all this? I was very skeptical about why I was playing golf when I couldn’t be there for my grandmother. I’m actually the eldest granddaughter, and my family was going through a difficult time. I couldn’t be there for my family. And I really place a high value on happiness. So golf is a means to get there. It’s not an end for me. So at the time I became really doubtful about why I was playing golf. But I think time heals everything. And after Singapore, I came to Korea, I was able to [see] my grandmother, and it just gave me a lot of comfort.”

Ko has found her happiness on the golf course at the right time. There are two events left on the LPGA Tour calendar, the final event being the CME Group Tour Championship where the winner’s check is the biggest in women’s golf: $1.5 million. Playing for a big paycheck and Player of the Year honors is a lot of pressure, but Ko continues to prove that she can handle it.

Sarah Stier

By Keely Levins
Jin Young Ko is on a hot streak. In her last six starts, she’s won three times. It’s good timing, because she’s on the brink of breaking one of Annika Sorenstam’s records: most consecutive competitive rounds in the 60s.

En route to her win at the Cognizant Founders Cup two weeks ago, Ko shot a final-round 66 to tie the record of 14 consecutive rounds under 70 that was first set by Sorenstam in 2005 and was later matched by So Yeon Ryu in 2016-17. Ko is ranked No. 2 in the world and will attempt to break the record when she tees off in the first round of the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea. The last time the event was held, in 2019 at LPGA International Busan, Ko shot rounds of 67-69-71-71.

The 26-year-old has broken a record previously held by one of the greatest to ever play the game: In 2019, Ko passed Tiger Woods’ record for longest streak without making a bogey. She went an incredible 114 tournament holes without making a bogey (or worse) to Tiger’s 110 holes.

Ko said she knew about the record when she played her final round at the Cognizant Founders Cup, and that it motivated her to play well enough to tie the record. Obviously, the prospect of now breaking the record is hard to ignore.

“The pressure is there, but I think that I can keep the pressure in check,” Ko said. “And I also think that having that ambition, I guess, to break records and that desire is also what drives players in general to be better.”

By Gabrielle Herzig
This is it – the creepiest player gift in the history of player gifts.

PGA and LPGA event marketing teams can get pretty creative with the hospitality goodies they give players, but this is hands down the weirdest one we’ve seen yet.

As seen on Danielle Kang’s Instagram story, players who arrived at the BMW Ladies Championship at LPGA International Busan in Busan, Korea this week received a metal tin with a traditional Korean dalgona cookie inside. The toffee-like desserts were featured in the third episode of ‘Squid Game,’ the viral Korean Netflix show that’s driving the internet bonkers.

Squid Game has officially reached 111 million fans — making it our biggest series launch ever! pic.twitter.com/SW3FJ42Qsn

— Netflix (@netflix) October 12, 2021

Without the nightmarish context of the dystopian show, the cookies would be a lighthearted and fitting welcome gift, considering the dessert originated in Korea. But when you’ve seen ‘Squid Game,’ the sight is not a pleasant one.

Danielle Kang’s cookie before …

Danielle Kang’s cookie after …

In the show, hundreds of people are invited to play a series of Korean children’s games to win millions of dollars, but the stakes are life and death. The dalgona cookies were the star of the second “game,” where players were tasked with carving intricate shapes out of the delicate honeycomb cookies with just a pin, in less than ten minutes. Each player is forced to choose a shape before hearing the premise of the game – leaving some with a simple triangle to carve, and others with the ridiculously challenging outline of an umbrella. Let’s just say that if a player failed to complete the challenge and broke even a fraction of their cookie, the results weren’t very pretty.

Despite the initial shock, several LPGA players tried their hand at the game and shared the results on social media.

Some were successful:

By Ryan Herrington
Ha Na Jang is no stranger to the LPGA, having won four times in 2½ years on tour in 2016 and 2017. The 27-year-old has the opportunity to return if she wishes, after shooting a final-round 65 at the BMW Ladies Championship, then winning the title in her native South Korea in a three-hole playoff over Danielle Kang.

Jang left the LPGA in May 2017 citing a desire to return home and be closer to her parents. She resumed her career in Korea, where she has won 12 times on the KLPGA since turning pro in 2010. By winning on Sunday as a non-LPGA member, Jang can re-join the LPGA Tour immediately or take membership once more in 2020.

Jang’s place on the KLPGA money list earned her a spot in the field at LPGA International Busan, and she settled in quickly with rounds of 69-67-68 to sit one off the lead entering the final round.

Kang, a winner a week earlier at the Buick LPGA Shanghai, was two back and got off to a fast start on Sunday. The American, who has ties to the Busan area (she lived there parts of several years as a child due to her father’s job) made eight birdies in her first 13 holes, charging to a four-shot lead at one point before finishing with a bogey-free 64, the low round of the tournament.

Jang was playing impressively, too, shooting a back-nine 31 with a birdie on the 17th hole that tied Kang at 19 under overall and forced the playoff.

The pair matched pars on the first extra hole before Kang lipped out a 12-foot birdie try on the second that would have given her the title. On the third playoff hole, the par-4 10th, Jang hit her approach to four feet. When Kang missed a 20-foot birdie try, Jang rolled in her putt for the win.

Jang’s victory is even more impressive considering her current physical state; for at least a month she’s been dealing with a hairline stress fracture in her foot. She managed the injury en route to a victory three weeks ago in Korea, but had to withdraw from her last two starts, a pair of majors on the KLPGA.

Jang faces a different type of play-or-not-play decision in the coming weeks regarding a return to the LPGA. To become a member in 2020, she must notify tour officials by Nov. 18.

“As for going back to the LPGA, there’s a lot to discuss,” Jang said. “My mother is not quite well yet. I think I would have an answer for you regarding returning to the LPGA later on. I can’t say right now.”
