By Alex Myers
Welcome to another edition of The Grind where we have mixed feelings about Larry Fitzgerald’s latest romp at Pebble Beach. On one hand, winning a tournament involving 120 amateurs—many of whom are probably sandbaggers—in convincing fashion two out of three years seems about as mathematically possible as the New York Knicks winning the NBA title this season. Larry was in such control on Sunday he started filming the action!

Harry How

On the other hand, since I put my handicap police hat on, I’ve had numerous people reach out to me, including Larry’s father, with glowing testimonials about the future NFL Hall-of-Famer (Imagine how good he’s going to get when he finally retires?) and current GOAT of net scoring in golf. So perhaps it’s not right to label him a sandbagger. Although, to be fair, anyone who has ever won a net competition (myself included) has received some ribbing about their handicap. Also, I have never played a full round with Fitzgerald, so I can’t properly evaluate his current 9.0 handicap. Yep, that’s definitely how we should settle this debate. Larry, invite me out to Seminole or Whisper Rock for a few rounds and I’ll be the judge. Preferably, before the cold front arrives here at the end of the week. Either location works for me. Let’s do this. Please.

WE’RE BUYING

Nick Taylor: How has this guy only won once before?! Faced with windy conditions and a pairing with a living legend who everyone was rooting for, this Canadian channelled Clint Eastwood and said, “Make my day.” After a back-nine stumble, a chip-in on 15 and a rare birdie on 17 gave him a four-shot, life-changing win at a place where just last year he announced a life-changing moment.

And now:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B8aTH1NlnGz/?utm_source=ig_embed

Pretty cool.

Victorian Open/Min Woo Lee: While Golf Twitter bitched (a bit too much) about coverage of the AT&T Pebble Beach, this tournament rightfully drew rave reviews. Or rather, tournaments with simultaneous European Tour and LPGA events happening on the same course while men and women played for the same purse. Congrats to the two winners, Min Woo Lee and Hee Young Park:

2 trophies. 2 wins. 1 equal purse ? #VicOpen pic.twitter.com/YVgOND8tIQ

Lee is particularly impressive. The 21-year-old Aussie who won the 2016 U.S. Junior was already the longest hitter on the European Tour despite weighing only 165 pounds. But he might have put on a few LBs celebrating his first win:

We think @Minwoo27Lee enjoyed his maiden tour win… ? #VicOpen pic.twitter.com/bE151za4KW

He just needs to work on his celebrations with his caddie:

We can all relate to this… ?@Minwoo27Lee #VicOpen pic.twitter.com/OpC83PEfEz

— DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) February 9, 2020

Then again, so do most tour pros.

Golf Digest: That’s right, GOLF DIGEST. Editor-in-Chief Jerry Tarde partnered with Nick Taylor, received some serious Sunday airtime in that group that also included Phil Mickelson and Steve Young (NBD), and some serious praise from CBS’ Jim Nantz, who noted Taylor had “the calming influence of Jerry Tarde every step of the way.” Our boss did pretty well golfing his own ball too as he and Taylor finished T-2 in the Pro-Am, which is basically a win, because, well, Larry Fitzgerald. And how about Jerry’s sweater game?

Straight fire! OK, now we’re heading into potential brown-nosing territory. And Team Taylor/Tarde finished five shots back despite Nick winning the tournament by four, so it’s not like Jerry played like Tiger at Pebble in 2000. OK, now we’ve gone too far the other direction. . . Anyway, staff writer Daniel Rapaport picked up Matthew Fitzpatrick’s staff bag and helped his Northwestern buddy make the cut:

Not the finish we wanted but what an unbelievable week! pic.twitter.com/etUHs4MsOw

Talk about a great side gig for a golf writer. Dan, you’re bringing in donuts or something the next time you’re in the office.

WE’RE SELLING

Ernie Els not captaining: After leading a spirited challenge at the 2019 Presidents Cup, the Big Easy said he’s done being the big cheese of the International squad. Too bad. The team seemed headed in a positive direction.

Quinn Rooney/Getty Images

Rory McIlroy’s taste in movies: I love nearly everything about Rory McIlroy, especially his running interview series with the Independent’s Paul Kimmage. HOWEVAH, McIlroy made a real bogey with his assessment of “La La Land”:

To be clear, I have no problem with him crying at a movie. “The Shawshank Redemption” gets me every time. Obviously. But “La La Land”?! And specifically the music of “La La Land”?! Rory, let’s go see a real musical sometime.

Bryson DeChambeau’s fitness ranking: All power to Bryson for getting yoked this off-season, but he’s the 24th fittest athlete on the planet? Really? He’s fitter than, oh, I don’t know, Russell Westbrook? Or DK Metcalf?!

Or any NFL player for that matter? Even the kickers are jacked. Or . . . Brooks Koepka? Sure thing, Sports Illustrated. That being said, I love how this list just stokes the silly Brooks/Bryson feud. Live look at Brooks right now:

ON TAP

The PGA Tour heads to La La Land (Get your tissues ready, Rory!) for the Genesis Invitational, AKA that event Tiger hosts at Riviera, which always prompts lectures from all the golf architect geeks on Twitter. Get ready for a week of hearing about the 10th hole!

Random tournament fact: Tiger Woods has never won in 10 starts as a pro at Riviera, the most times he’s ever played a PGA Tour course without winning. He also teed it up as an amateur in 1992 and 1993, missing the cut both times. Rest assured, you will be able to recite all these facts from memory by week’s end.

RANDOM PROP BETS OF THE WEEK

—Larry Fitzgerald will be let back onto Pebble Beach property next year if he still has a 9 handicap: 1-MILLION -to-1 odds

—Tiger Woods will finally win at Riviera this week: 18-to-1 odds (Actual odds)

—Rory will be ribbed for his “La La Land”/”Pretty Woman” comments this week: LOCK

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Check out this incredible shot Tim Herron took of Pebble Beach’s 18th hole:

Same, Tim. Still, it’s a great photo. By whomever took it.

VIRAL VIDEO OF THE WEEK

Shout-out to Sam Harrop for this fantastic song parody about Tony Finau’s lack of wins. The Charles Howell and Rocco Mediate lines killed me:

Many of you will know by now that music is my first love (though golf's pretty high to be fair)

First time I've done something like this, so go easy on me ?

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“There’s more than just guys, you know. It just makes sense. We should do this more often. The fact that this happens only once in a year is just nonsense.” —Geoff Ogilvy on the Victorian Open. Well said, Geoff. And Ogilvy had Golf Twitter in a tizzy talking about karma as he grabbed a share of the 36-hole lead in the event. Too bad there’s no such thing as karma and he finished last among the 38 golfers who made the three-day cut.

THIS WEEK IN CELEBRITY GOLFERS (NOT NAMED LARRY FITZGERALD)

Seeing Macklemore take six practice swings before topping one off the tee was tough, but the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am still produced some fun celebrity moments with Bill Murray. As usual. Here he is sweeping a putt in backward:

THIS WEEK IN CELEBRITY GOLFERS (NOT AT PEBBLE BEACH)

The Rory McIlroy-Caroline Wozniacki engagement didn’t last, but it looks like the former World No. 1 women’s tennis player has held onto a thing or two from her ex when it comes to the golf swing:

Very impressive.

THIS WEEK IN PGA TOUR PRO-WAGS PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

Justin Thomas used his off week to give the two special ladies in his life a nice night at a Las Vegas Golden Knights game:

https://www.instagram.com/p/B8WpnhNBu5a/?utm_source=ig_embed

Awww. And JT, if that’s your girlfriend’s idea of a romantic night out, she’s definitely a keeper.

THIS WEEK IN PHIL BEING PHIL

I would have moved this up to the “buy” section, but it was already getting too long. But even with a tough finish, Phil Mickelson had himself a great week. Just days after saying he’d turn down a potential special exemption into the U.S. Open if he didn’t qualify, Mickelson nearly took care of that himself with a third-place finish. And he did it with his usual flair. Only Phil would be able to pull off a bunker shot like this AND immediately rank it:

Some par saves rank higher than others.@PhilMickelson said this one is in his top 5.#QuickHits pic.twitter.com/6Kvjkaiyg2

Then the following day, he got up and down from here!

Bill Freakin’ Murray doesn’t let anything get between him and a round of golf. Not age, not weather, not vermin, not a bucket hat shortage. Hell, not even a zombie apocalypse can stop him…

But you know what they say, the proof is in the puddin’, and thankfully they have all kinds of puddin’—black puddin’, bread puddin’, banana puddin’—over in Scotland, where Murray is spending his week hacking it around the Home of Golf as part of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship’s celebrity team event. Murray showed up for his practice round on Tuesday with a bum wing, but not willing to let his stunt double have all the fun, he buckled down and played with one arm, much to the delight of the Scottish galleries, many of whom took a sick day just to head down to the course and shout “WHAT AN INCREDIBLE CINDERELLA STORY” at Murray from across the fairway.

P.S. Love the ol’ dress-tie-as-a-sling look. The man really is smoother than a Gibson martini.

So how did Murray get nicked up just before the season’s first celebrity major? Mum is the word, but the legendary Hollywood human icon did celebrate his 69th birthday on Saturday, so here’s hoping it happened during the festivities and not punching the TV following the Cubs’ six-game losing streak.

Barring some sort Tommy John scenario, however, Murray will tee off in the Team Championship on Thursday alongside Matthew Goode (Downton Abbey), Justin Timberlake, Greg Kinnear, and Luke Wilson, which sounds like a pretty damn good Featured Group to us.

Day wins Wells Fargo with a fiery finish

The Green Mile is supposed to be one of the toughest stretches on tour. Jason Day made it look as difficult as your local putt-putt.

Tied with rookie Aaron Wise with just three holes remaining, Day birdied the 16th and 17th at Quail Hollow before making a conservative par at the last to win the Wells Fargo Championship by two shots. A clutch performance highlighted by a near ace at the par-3 17th, a hole that surrendered just three birdies on the round:

It was far from a flawless effort, as the Aussie hit just six fairways on the afternoon and made four bogeys, including an ugly snap hook at the 14th into the water. Still, when a push from the 21-year-old Wise made it interesting, Day answered with moxie.

Day already bounced back from his nightmarish 2017 with a victory at Torrey Pines and a runner-up finish at Pebble Beach, and to claim he’s angling to reclaim the No. 1 world ranking is an affront Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and the like. Conversely, with the Players on the docket and the U.S. and British Opens looming, the 2015 PGA Champ has recaptured his formidable form, a notion that should send head-shakes throughout the sport.

Sam Greenwood

Tiger stumbles in Sawgrass warm-up

There were signs of promise. His driving, poor in his previous six starts, was strong, finishing 16th in strokes gained/off-the-tee. His approach game was similarly solid. But Tiger Woods had his worst finish since the missing the cut at Riviera, shooting a final-round three-over 74 to finish T-55 at the Wells Fargo Championship.

“I didn’t putt well again,” said Woods, who needed 31 strokes on the greens Sunday. “I felt like I drove it pretty decent today, but I made nothing. The chances I did have, I missed them all. It was just a bad week, and the good news is wiped your hands clean and go on to the next one.”

Short-game woes were a recurring theme for Woods at Quail Hollow. The 42-year-old finished the week last in sg/putting for those that made the cut. He also failed to record a red number on Sunday, just the sixth non-major round in his career without a birdie.

“I got shutout,” Woods said.

Not the ideal reps before travelling to TPC Sawgrass, which ranked as the second-hardest track on tour last season. Of course, Si Woo Kim missed four of his previous five cuts before his Players triumph last spring, so perhaps Woods is right where he needs to be. Speaking of which…

Andrew Redington

Golf’s biggest stars paired for Players

Knock the “fifth major” motif all you want, but the Players Championship certainly knows how to set the stage when it comes to marquee pairings.

The event announced its two featured groups on Sunday, with Woods and Phil Mickelson serving as headliners. The two Hall of Famers famously played a practice round together at this year’s Masters, although have not been paired together in tournament play since the 2014 PGA Championship. Both have won at TPC Sawgrass in their storied careers and will be joined by Rickie Fowler, the 2015 Players Champ.

They’re not the only group flaunting firepower. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy, the past three FedEx Cup champions, will also be teeing it up together on Thursday and Friday. Two more featured groups will be announced early this week, but good luck topping these trios for attention.

Darren Carroll/Getty Images

A peculiar rules snafu

Stop if you’ve heard this sentence before: there was a run-in with the rules of golf this weekend. Denmark’s Nicole Broch Larsen was its latest victim.

On Saturday at the Volunteers of America LPGA Texas Classic, Broch Larsen called over an official because she thought she saw her ball move. However, the official ruled that Broch Larsen hadn’t caused its relocation, saved from a possible penalty.

Except for another official, assigned to watch the broadcast, contacted the on-site Rules Committee with “added information” from seeing video footage. The Rules Committee, upon further review, assessed Broch Larsen a one-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2.

If you’re wondering, “Hey, I thought this review nonsense was over with,” GD’s Ryan Herrington explains: “Video was permitted to help overturn the original ruling in this instance despite last year’s decision, “The Lexi Rule,” which says that a player’s reasonable judgment will be accepted even if video shows it to be inaccurate. That was because “The Lexi Rule” was meant to apply when the issue involved in determining a point of relief or the replacement of a lifted ball, or in instances where it reveals things that could not reasonably be seen with the naked eye.”

Though the penalty dropped her from the lead at the time of the penalty, the stroke ultimately did not decide the fate of the tournament, as Broch Larsen finished six shots behind Sung-Hyun Park. Nevertheless, the recurrence of such matters—specifically, the perceived lack of common sense in which they’re handled in—is getting old. It would be refreshing if those who monitor golf start applying that “game of integrity” maxim to themselves.

Bill Murray, still the man

For the record, gender parties are narcissistic and highly unnecessary. No one cares that you’re having a baby, let alone if it’s a boy or girl. But, if you’re going to ruin everyone’s weekend with this stupid party, might as well bring Bill Murray along for the ride.

Playing in the Murray Bros. Caddyshack Golf Tournament, Michael Davis (no, not that Mike Davis) and his wife wanted to do their reveal a la Dustin Johnson via an exploding golf ball. However, the couple ran into the owner of the Chive, who was able to get Murray to do the honours instead:

Jacquie and Mike Davis asked our co-founder John Resig to do their gender reveal today in St. Augustine. John had a little surprise in store for them, Bill Murray showed up to tee off instead. It’s a boy! @WMurrayGolf pic.twitter.com/DcnfoOiF7I

— theCHIVE (@theCHIVE) April 27, 2018

Props to Murray for playing along, and our apologies to all expecting parents. Because after this video, the old “Alright, let’s take a bite of our cupcakes and see what colour’s inside!” stunt ain’t going to cut it.

As the face of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Bill Murray draws his share of critics. Here’s why they’re wrong

By Joel Beall
If Deane Beman had his way, the Bill Murray Experience would have ended as soon as it started. It was 1993, and the then-commissioner was furious. Murray, in his second appearance at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, had dragged an older (albeit willing) woman from the gallery for a quick soiree in a bunker, one that ended with her flailing into the sand.

Coupled with other antics, like Murray yelling “Hurry Up!” towards former Vice President Dan Quayle—let it be known slow play is far from a modern issue—Beman had seen enough, calling the funny man’s behavior “inappropriate and detrimental.” Never one to fall in line, Murray fired back. “It’s a Nazi state out here,” he joked. “He’s trying to ban us from the tournament because it’s too much fun. He’s out of touch. He’s just another screwhead too big for his britches.”

Beman was a visionary, his tenure marked by growth and prosperity. But diplomacy wasn’t always his forte. Though he punished Murray the following year by relegating him to a tee time outside the TV broadcast window, Murray remained one of the biggest draws at Pebble. Tournament organizers not only disregarded Beman’s request to have Murray tone down his act, they openly sided with the comedic force.

“Bill Murray has been great for this tournament,” said Darius Keaton, vice chairman of the AT&T, in 1994. “We raise money for charity. He’s been a great help and a terrific guy. And Beman would push him out of the tournament.”

Beman retired from his post shortly thereafter, and his successor, Tim Finchem, restored the tour’s relationship with Murray. Two decades later, that olive branch has proved fruitful for both sides. Murray is a part of the tournament’s marketing campaign, a featured player on the weekend broadcast, and continues to garner the week’s biggest crowds.

In turn, Murray’s Pebble popularity has helped spawn his own golf clothing line, and one could easily correlate his pro-am theatrics fueling his “America’s favorite photo bomb” persona.

And yet, every time golf returns to Carmel Bay, a segment of golf fans wish Beman would’ve prevailed.

C Flanigan

Murray’s relationship with Pebble has engendered, to some, a share of unfortunate consequences. Celebrities (and their marketing teams) saw what Murray had become and thought, “Hey, why can’t we tap into that?” An invite to the Monterey Peninsula need not be just a three-day excursion to play on some of the best golf courses with the best players; it could be an opportunity to build one’s brand.

That logic overlooked one big point: There’s only one Bill Murray. His actions were extensions of his own unique character—or at least the one the public had known from his work. It gave his theater-on-the-grass authenticity, but also made it hard to replicate.

Indeed, Murray is the exception, not the rule. Athletes, singers, actors and CEOs try their damnedest to ham it up in front of the cameras and fans at the tournament in the Murray vein, but more often than not it feels forced—and frequently falls flat. Murray preening over a good shot? Great. Andy Garcia or Chris Berman doing the same, not so much. Even in our culture that’s infatuated with celebrity, it can lead to brutal television.

Which brings us to another uncomfortable consequence of Murray’s act: the broadcast. Because of the positive response to Murray, the networks—in this case CBS—think this applies to all celebrities. It’s a decision that leads to B-list stars getting more air time than the tour pros, particularly on the Saturday broadcast. Worse, CBS has been guilty of giving its own talent a disproportionate amount of spotlight, the golf tournament becoming a platform to talk up its sitcoms and programs.

As a former tournament official told us, “Come for the golf; stay for the 30-minute ‘NCIS’ promo.”

Harry How

Because he’s become the face of the tournament, Murray routinely receives a disproportionate amount of criticism for its perceived shortcomings. That’s regrettable, since it was Murray who provided a shot of vitality to the event, and the sport at large. Murray’s performance, in many ways, was a revelation. Golf had long battled its association with sanctimony, exclusivity and stuffiness. Here came Murray, tearing those walls down with a never-ending repartee with the gallery.

He tossed beach balls into the crowd, signed autographs between shots, pulled off the exploding ball trick with aplomb, and wore clothing designed from your grandma’s wallpaper. He had taken Caddyshack and made it real. And as weird as it sounds, that disposition was considered cutting edge at the time.

Murray was silly, and with good reason: He reminded audiences that golf is a game, and games are supposed to be fun.

“There were times when nothing I did was acceptable, and that somehow, what we were doing was a distraction,” Murray said in 2013. “It’s funny, people are very proprietary about golf, everyone thinks they’re in charge of golf, and it’s their own game, but it’s a massive thing. It’s like saying each person has to live the same way. We’re all supposed to be in this life for the amazement that everyone has a unique difference.”

Oh yes, “distraction.” That’s another charge often levied at Murray—that he had become too big a one. Except, when you talk to his former playing partners, who insist otherwise.

D.A. Points, who won his first PGA Tour title at the 2011 tournament, credits Murray for keeping him calm that week. “The levity was the biggest help,” Points told Golf Digest earlier this week. “We were having a lot of fun.” It probably didn’t hurt that Murray bought the pair ice cream on the final day’s back nine.

If anything, Points notes he was a good diversion, keeping the endlessly polite man from tightening up as he neared the precipice of a career breakthrough. Scott Simpson, the former U.S. Open champ who was Murray’s partner for years, testified the same.

“Bill wants to have fun,” Simpson said. “He knows the history [of the tournament] and feels that everyone is there to have a good time. So he amps it up a notch…or 10.

Jonathan Ferrey

” As he nears 70, Murray might not be the showman of yesteryear, but he continues to resonate in a way unmatched by anyone in the game. A tournament official relayed a tale that one year the gate was down from the previous season, a shock given Tiger Woods was in the field for the first time in awhile. The next winter, ticket sales were back up as Tiger once again skipped the event, and the team came to the realization that it was Murray, not Tiger, that connected with the people.

“Bill Murray transcends all generations of golf and non-golf fans alike,” says Steve John, CEO and tournament director of the Monterey Peninsula Foundation. “If you take a look at his gallery, you’ll see that it is made up from men and women ages 15-70.”

And while he is the consummate entertainer inside the ropes, he also takes his golf seriously. He won with Points in the pro-am portion of the event in 2011, arguably Murray’s most impressive feat to this day.

In short, Murray embodied the “grow the game” ideology years before golf made it a rallying cry.

Officials find humor that some of Murray’s biggest critics are the same people who champion supplemental activities like Topgolf or the increasingly rowdy scenes at the Ryder Cup and Waste Management Phoenix Open. Without Murray, those seeds of acceptance would likely have never been planted. “This sounds sacrilegious,” said a Pebble Beach spokesperson, “but other than Arnold Palmer, I’d put Murray up there with anyone in terms of influence over American public golf.”

As for those who don’t enjoy his shtick, there needs to be some acknowledgement that Murray has good intentions at heart.

“The original Crosby was about fun. As it became more corporate, it became less about fun sometimes,” Murray said in 2013. “You can really cause a joyous moment, if you can sort of build up some sort of expectation, and then it actually takes place. … That’s what we try to do. Put on a little pressure, to make it more fun. To have a little more joy.”

Even Deane Beman would agree, golf could use a bit of that.
