By Joel Beall

Admit it. You saw the name and thought, “Wait, there’s another Jay Haas?”

No offence to the man, the one and only Jay Haas, he accomplished much in his career. But it is a career that is very much in the past tense. Haas hasn’t played a full PGA Tour schedule since 2005. His last tour win was in 1993, three years before Masters champ Scottie Scheffler was born. He’s 18 years older than rookies on the PGA Tour Champions. So while it was charming to see 68-year-old Jay team up with son Bill at this week’s Zurich Classic at New Orleans, it had the hint of a publicity stunt in a game built on meritocracy.

That sentiment isn’t any less true following Day 1 at TPC Louisiana. But make sure to add this: The old guy’s still got it.

The Haas boys turned in a seven-under 65 during Thursday’s four-ball format, a score that tied tournament favorites Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa (who are a collective 58 years younger than the Haas clan) and defending champs Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman, and proved the biggest surprise of Round 1 at TPC Louisiana.

“That’s really impressive. It really is,” Morikawa said of Jay’s performance. “Some of these par 3s are playing over 200 yards, and to have a birdie chance inside 15, 20 feet is a good shot already. So what Jay did today, very, very impressive.”

Jay and Bill had the longest odds of winning entering the week, a byproduct of Jay teeing it up on tour for the first time since 2010. But Bill, playing this year on a one-time money list exemption, hasn’t done much to inspire confidence either, posting just one top-25 finish in 18 starts this season. Nevertheless, Jay and Bill combined for eight birdies against one bogey Thursday. Their score has them just on the fringes of contention — six shots off the lead from Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele — but perhaps more importantly, gives them a legitimate shot to reach the weekend.

Should that come to pass, Jay would have the honour as the oldest player in PGA Tour history to make a cut, a record held by Sam Snead (67 years old) at the 1979 Westchester Classic. But from the sound of it, this week’s mission has already been accomplished.

“Obviously just being out here and teeing it up and hearing our names called tomorrow, hopefully I can hit some good shots and make some birdies and everything,” Jay said on Wednesday. “But ultimately this is just … to be with my son, again, on the grandest stage here, that’s what I’m trying to take from it.”

“It’s just a good opportunity to play golf and enjoy it and have fun, but also inside the ropes be competitive and him be able to see what I’m talking about when I say either I’m struggling or here I hit a good one, what do you see here?” Bill echoed. “To have him inside the ropes on my team, it’s just a great opportunity, and it’s just a special week. Something I’ll remember forever.”

An interesting pairing near the top

Robert Garrigus picked an interesting time to stage a comeback.

The 44-year-old has spent the last five years in golf’s wilderness, his last top-10 on tour coming in January 2018. In a vacuum, seeing his name along with teammate Tommy Gainey on the Zurich leader board after an 11-under 61 would be quite the shock.

But what makes their Thursday performance especially noteworthy is what happened earlier in the week. Golfweek reported that Garrigus became the first tour player to apply for a conflicting event release from PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan for the Saudi-back LIV Golf series that begins in June, a report that Garrigus confirmed to the Golf Channel.

“I am grateful to have been given a sponsor exemption into this week’s event and I just want to focus on playing the best I can,” Garrigus said.

On that end, Garrigus fulfilled his promise, contributing five birdies on the round.

“We had a great day today, made a bunch of birdies,” Garrigus said after the round. “I chipped in. He was making everything on the front nine.”

Chris Graythen

Moore bounces back from ER visit

According to Matthew NeSmith, Thursday’s aim was pretty low.

“We were just trying to finish 18 holes upright,” NeSmith said. “I mean, finish 18 holes upright, and all of a sudden, we started catching a touch of a rhythm, started making a few putts, started finding the round a little bit. We finished 18 holes, and that was the goal.”

Rhythm was caught and putts were made, as he and Taylor Moore combined for a 12-under 60. But should you think NeSmith is merely being humble, it sounds like reaching the finish line was legitimately a goal.

That’s because Moore spent Wednesday morning at the hospital.

“I had food poisoning Tuesday night up until midday yesterday,” Moore explained on his emergency-room visit. “So just got an IV and some nausea medicine. Finally ate something this morning, which was nice. Like he said, just tried to finish every hole. That was kind of a win within its own right.”

Moore did, ahem, more than stay upright, lighting up TPC Louisiana with six birdies and an eagle on his day. It’s been a somewhat shaky rookie year (which rookie years tend to be) for Moore, making seven cuts in 14 starts and ranking 123rd in strokes gained entering New Orleans. A good week could help him secure his card for next season.

But first things first, particularly with the difficult alternate shot on tap. In terms of how the team will approach Friday, it sounds like Moore has a solid game plan.

“No more Cajun for the next couple days,” he said.

MacIntyre hates shot, still makes hole-in-one

Robert MacIntyre is a fortunate man.

That’s because the pride of Scotland struck, judging by his dejected and disgusted look after contact, a poor tee shot at the par-3 14th on Thursday, to the point that MacIntyre glanced away from his ball in flight. Which is a shame, as he missed that ball finding the bottom of the cup:

He didn't love it, but he ??????.

ACE from @Robert1Lefty! pic.twitter.com/Tq5mfQnH24

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 21, 2022

Look at that smirk; MacIntyre knows he got away with one. Conversely, there are plenty of shots that are good until they aren’t, so no need to apologise.

Cantlay, Schauffele: Still good at golf

We should probably discuss the leaders, yes? That would be Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who shot the round of the day with a 13-under 59.

The duo, which has quickly become a Team USA staple, was bogey-free in the afternoon playing alongside Scheffler and Ryan Palmer, with Cantlay’s birdie on the final hole giving them the first sub-60 round in Zurich Classic history.

While Schauffele and Cantlay were one of the marquee groups, there was a bit of a question mark on how they would play. Or more specifically how Schauffele would play: He is having an odd season, ranking 17th in strokes gained but turning in just one top-10 in 10 starts. But the X-Man more than did his part on Thursday with six birdies.

Friday will be a captivating watch, as last year’s alternate shot format did them in to the tune of a 74, ultimately finishing T-11. If Thursday’s round was any indication, there seems to be little that will get in their way.

Bill and Jay Haas. Chung Sung-Jun

By Ryan Herrington
Jay Haas was 19 when he made his first start in a PGA Tour event, the Greater Greensboro Open back in 1973 as an amateur. Forty-nine years later, at 68, he’s teeing it up for the 799th time (second only to Mark Brooks’ 803) when he partners with his son Bill at this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Despite all the years and all the experience, Haas, a nine-time tour winner, appeared to have some trepidation after a couple days of practice at TPC Louisiana.

“Yesterday didn’t help me in any way because I didn’t play very well,” Haas said on Wednesday. “So hopefully I’ll get better as the week goes on. It’s just fun being here, again being with Bill, getting the adrenalin flowing, and hopefully we can do better than I’m anticipating I’m going to do.”

Modesty aside, Haas hasn’t played a PGA Tour event since the 2010 Players Championship. The last time he made the cut was the 2006 PGA Championship. Since then, he’s been a regular on the PGA Tour Champions, winning 19 times on the senior circuit, but he knows this is a different test. Jay says Bill is outdriving him by as much as 50 yards and TPC Louisiana is playing at 7,425 yards this week, making the course a true challenge.

Even so, there’s a level of excitement given the chance to play with Bill, who approached tour officials earlier in the year to confirm Jay was eligible (he is still a tour member so that was fine). After getting approval, Bill asked his old man about the opportunity, noting that it would be fun to compete by his side but also to have him offer some friendly advice.

“I love him watching me play,” said Bill, who teamed with Jay to win exhibition competitions in 2004 (CVS Charity Classic) and 2012 (Umpqua Bank Challenge) and played for his dad at the Presidents Cup in 2015. “Last week he came down and my mom [Pam] came down and watched me at Hilton Head. I just enjoy him being out there. He listens to me go through my rounds on the phone or in person sometimes. When he’s there, he sees what I’m talking about, and he helps me with my game.

“So I think it’s just a good opportunity to play golf and enjoy it and have fun, but also inside the ropes be competitive and him be able to see what I’m talking about when I say either I’m struggling or here I hit a good one, what do you see here? I do that anyway.”

Jay was appreciative of the offer but admitted he wondered if Bill might change his mind.

“The first week or so, I kind of kept thinking, ‘well, he’s going to come to his senses and find Nick Watney or somebody,’ you know, one of his buddies,” said Jay (they’re coincidentally playing with Watney and Charley Hoffman on Thursday and Friday). But the more I thought about it, the more I’m loving it. All the guys out here have been great. So many people have said this is unbelievably cool that you’re getting to do that. It seems like I’ve become Pops out here. I’ve heard that a bunch. Hey, Pops, good shot and all that stuff. It’s been very cool. Very cool.”

Haas has a history with the New Orleans tournament, or at least when it was a traditional 72-hole stroke-play event. He’s played in the tournament 13 times, the first coming in 1977 when it was called the First NBC New Orleans Open and played at Lakewood Country Club. His best finish was a tie for second in 1983 when he cashed a check for $29,866 (finishing 22nd this week will earn him that much).

While a bit nostalgic, Jay also wants to hold up his end of the bargain this week. He knows Bill—making his 442nd career PGA Tour start—is still grinding things out this season, having played in 18 events but sitting 168th on the FedEx Cup points list. Bill, who turns 40 in May, hasn’t missed a cut in his last six cuts dating back to the Honda Classic in February, but his best finish in that time is a T-25.

Should the duo make the cut this week, it would be the 593rd time in Jay’s career, extending the tour record he already owns. He would also become the oldest player to make a cut on the PGA Tour, breaking Sam Snead’s record of 67 years two months, 21 days when he did it at the 1979 Westchester Classic. In the process, Jay and Bill would become the first father-son duo to make a cut on tour since Davis Love III and Dru Love at the 2018 RSM Classic.

“Obviously just being out here and teeing it up and hearing our names called tomorrow, hopefully I can hit some good shots and make some birdies and everything,” Jay said. “But ultimately this is just … to be with my son, again, on the grandest stage here, that’s what I’m trying to take from it.”

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler returns to action this week for the PGA Tour’s only full-field team event, the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He’ll partner with Ryan Palmer, a winner in 2019, and they’ll be one of the 80 duos looking to defeat the defending champs, Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman.

With four-ball (best ball) on Thursday and Saturday and foursomes (alternate shot) on Friday and Sunday, the Zurich Classic’s fifth year as a team tournament will feature captivating star pairings and even one father-son squad.

Jay and Bill Haas will tee off this week, the former playing at age 68. So will Collin Morikawa and Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, and Shane Lowry and Ian Poulter. Not only are the pairings fun, but last year’s event went to extra holes as the Australian team Leishman and Smith outlasted South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.

The winning team will receive 400 FedEx Cup points per player and a $2,398,700 million share of the $8.3 million purse.

The PGA Tour announced Tuesday that Bill Haas has tested positive for COVID-19.

Haas, 38, was tested as part of the tournament screening process at this week’s RSM Classic in St. Simons Island, Ga. Due to the positive result, Haas is forced to withdraw from the event.

“It’s obviously disappointing news to receive,” Haas said in a statement, “but my focus is now on recovery and ensuring the health and well-being of my family.”

A six-time tour winner and 2011 FedEx Cup champ, Haas has struggled with his career since a car accident in 2018, finishing 152nd, 140th and 209th in the FedEx Cup standings the past three seasons. He has missed three cuts in four starts this fall and, after reaching as high as 12th in the OWGR, Haas entered the week 576th on the global pecking order.

“I am not playing well, there is no other way to put it,” Haas told Golf Digest earlier this year.

In a statement, the PGA Tour said Haas will have the tour’s full support during his isolation period as specified by CDC guidelines.

Keyur Khamar/PGA Tour
Xander Schauffele smiles after becoming the first rookie to win the Tour Championship in 2017 at East Lake.

By Brian Wacker
This week’s Northern Trust marks the start of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs. Qualifying for the event, and the postseason, by getting into the top 125 on the points list is its own singular accomplishment, one that comes with a just reward that the majority of pro golfers covet: Job security in the form of fully-exempt status for next season. Winning the FedEx Cup title is the ultimate prize, sure, but having a card on the world’s biggest tour takes care of an awful lot.

Still, moving on in the playoffs—specifically advancing through the first three events on to the finale at East Lake and the Tour Championship—can take care of a whole lot more.

First, there are the velvet ropes that it parts:

• Automatic entry into three of the following year’s majors; the Masters, U.S. Open and the Open Championship.

• A spot in the no-cut, free-money, automatic-world-ranking-points World Golf Championships events, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, the Players, Fort Worth Invitational, the Memorial and, previously, The National (RIP).

Then there is the extra dough.

Winning the FedEx Cup is worth a whopping $10 million, but every spot below that in the standings pays out, too. Last year, for example, Jason Dufner picked up an extra $175,000 for ending the year 30th in points. That’s $10,000 more than the 31st guy, Henrik Stenson, who didn’t make it to the Tour Championship. With no cut at East Lake, there’s the tournament prize money as well. Last year, Jhonattan Vegas took home a cool $140,000 for finishing last in the 30-man field. Not bad for four days of work.

The ultimate “rags to riches” story of the PGA Tour postseason might forever be Bill Haas. In 2011, he barely made it to the finale. At 25th in the standings, Haas needed about a dozen things to go his way to capture the FedEx Cup—including winning the Tour Championship. All of them happened, and viola, Haas padded his bank account by more than $11 million in the blink of a hole out from a hazard.

Bill Haas. Picture by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Image

It doesn’t stop there. Players can be rewarded handsomely by sponsors for getting that far, too. Take Xander Schauffele. The 24-year-old had already won earlier in the season at The Greenbrier a year ago and was on his way to earning the tour’s rookie-of-the-year honors. Then he became the first rookie to win the Tour Championship. The victory netted him more than $1.5 million in earnings, plus another $2 million for finishing third in the FedEx Cup standings. In the offseason, Schauffele also signed a new equipment deal that financially reflected his new-found status on tour.

“Getting to East Lake can easily add up to a six-figure bonus from a sponsor, especially a lesser player, and it gives you the opportunity to play for millions,” according to one agent who spoke on the condition of anonymity, adding that performances like that can also lead to overseas appearance fees as well as spots in “hit-and-giggle (your-way-to-the-bank)” events. “For someone like Xander, a young kid who wasn’t maybe expected to get that far, it was probably a nice bonus from his sponsors. It can add up to maybe a couple million bucks depending on the player and the deal.”

There are other ways it can pay off, too.

Justin Thomas came up just five points short of qualifying for the Tour Championship as a rookie in 2015. He won in Malaysia that fall and his future became a moot point. But he hasn’t forgotten about it. “It sucked,” he said. “I remember it mostly because it killed my chances at rookie of the year. It would have also gotten me into the majors for the next year, which ended up not being a problem, but to [get there] as a rookie is something not a lot of guys have done.”

Tony Finau had never made it to the Tour Championship before last year. A tie for seventh at East Lake moved him just inside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, where he has been ever since. The ranking would have been good enough to get him into the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship, but getting to East Lake first took care of that and whatever pressure might have existed otherwise. He went on to finishing 10th, fifth and ninth, respectively, in those majors in 2018.

Of course given Finau’s talents he likely would have achieved all that anyway. But the season-ender can mean an awful lot for a few guys every year, particularly to a player on the rise or one who has been around for a while but hasn’t reached the stratosphere of the game’s elite.

“My goal every year is to win, but making it to East Lake is always in the top two or three goals for sure,” said Ryan Palmer, who has done so twice in his career, in 2010 and 2014, while twice narrowly missing out on it as well. “Personally, it solidifies me as one of the top players in the world.

“It can be a career changer, too. It’s huge.”

Bud Cauley sustained several serious injuries in a car accident Friday night following the second round of the Memorial Tournament, as first reported by Golf Channel.

IMG, Cauley’s management firm, reported the golfer was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, five broken ribs and a fractured lower left leg. He had missed the cut in Memorial with scores of 77 and 76 and was supposed to play in a U.S. Open qualifier on Monday, but has since withdrawn.

Cauley’s former teammate at Alabama, Justin Thomas, offered a heartfelt tribute to his friend. The two were partners in this year’s Zurich Classic.

Not many people I love more in this world than my guy BC. Was a rough nights sleep last night. Glad to see and hear he’s been doing better. Prayers are needed and all we can do is hope for the best! Get well soon, homi ?? https://t.co/1BN088Wg5s

After his final round at the Memorial on Sunday, Thomas told reporters that he got a call at 11:30 p.m. Friday night from the wife of another person in the accident, James Whis. (Thomas is staying with Whis while playing in Dublin, Ohio.) Thomas said he was up late into the night trying to find out details of the accident and what kind of shape his friends were in.

“[Bud] was doing good yesterday,” said Thomas, who saw both Cauley and Whis in the hospital on Saturday. “It calmed me a lot after seeing him. I couldn’t hit a shot, couldn’t play a hole without thinking about him. And my buddy, Whis. … It sucks when your best friend’s in a serious car accident and there’s nothing you can do and nothing he can do.”

A total of four people were in the car, according to Thomas; the other two he said were friends of Whis.

Cauley, 28, had been making steady progress this season after working his way back from a shoulder injury that cost him the entire 2015 season, making cuts in 11 of 16 events.

This is the second time this season a PGA Tour player has been involved in a major car accident. In February, Bill Haas was a passenger in an accident in which the driver, Mark Gibello, was killed. Haas avoided serious injury and has recently returned to competition.

UPDATED, 6:50 p.m. — Cauley had surgery on Sunday to have plates put on several of his broken ribs, his father, Bill, told Golf Digest. He said that Bud was “doing great” but would likely be in the hospital for another few days for recovery. Bud also has been told not to fly for a couple of weeks because of his collapsed lung.

Bill Haas, at the Valspar Championship. (Photo by Michael Reaves/Getty Images)

By Brian Wacker
Last week amid Tigermania, Bill Haas quietly crept into contention at the Valspar Championship, shooting a bogey-free 68 in the second round that included an eagle on the par-five 14th at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course, where he reached the green in two and holed a 32-footer from across the green.

It was fleeting. Haas struggled on the weekend, failing to break par, and tumbled into a tie for 49th place. Still, he had plenty of reason to smile as he sat in the passenger seat of a golf cart headed toward the parking lot on Sunday, his one-year-old daughter in his lap, his wife Julie riding in the back with their two boys.

“It felt good to get back out playing,” Haas said. “Golf-wise, just trying to get sharp. That’s a nice thing to do and I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to do that.”

Just a few weeks earlier, Haas was the passenger in 72-year-old family friend Mark Gibello’s Ferrari on a street near Riviera Country Club on the eve of the Genesis Open when the car clipped another vehicle and slammed into a concrete telephone pole. Haas emerged from the wreckage disoriented and dazed and called 911. Gibello was pronounced dead at the scene.

Haas and Gibello, whom he got to know through his swing coach Billy Harmon, had played golf just the weekend before at Los Angeles Country Club, where Gibello was a member and involved in bringing the Walker Cup there last year, and Haas planned to stay with the Gibello family during the tournament.

“I don’t know that I’ll ever get past the fact he’s gone because we went out for a ride,” Haas said at the Valspar. “That’s gonna be difficult for a long time.”

The pain from the deep bruise in his left leg and discomfort in his right ankle have dissipated. More nagging is the torn meniscus he suffered shooting baskets in the offseason.

Mentally, it’s a different story. The incident is understandably still too traumatic for Haas’ wife to even talk about. In the days and weeks that followed, Haas has leaned on family and friends, as well as seeing a therapist, to get through the difficult time. The Haas’ have also kept in touch regularly with the Gibello family.

It has been a few weeks but he still finds himself asking what if and why, the type of questions there are no answers to and challenging to turn off. That’s unlikely to change anytime soon if ever.

If there is a place of solace, though, it’s on the golf course inside the ropes for the 35-year-old. The more he plays the easier it will get, Haas figures.

“I told him I was happy to see him,” said Geoff Ogilvy, who played with Haas the first two days at the Valspar. “He was the normal Bill Haas. If I hadn’t known what happened I wouldn’t have known any different. He’s such a class act on the course. He seemed to be content and happy to be out here again.”

Even so, Haas found himself getting annoyed after a couple of bogeys early in his round on Thursday, despite not having practiced much in the days leading into the tournament. The reaction was normal.

“I still want to do well and I’m thankful for the opportunity to do so,” he said. “There’s a bunch of people who’ve helped, his wife has been very supportive of me coming out and playing and that feels good. His family has been wonderful. That’s all I can do is go out there and try to do well for them.

“I don’t know what the rule book is for all this, but it feels good to be inside the ropes. I’d just like to make a few more putts like everyone else.”

Last Friday’s deadline to commit to the Valspar Championship focused on Tiger Woods, but Bill Haas will be another golfer fans are paying close attention to at this week’s event at Innisbrook. The six-time PGA Tour winner will make his return to competition after being injured in a Feb. 13 car crash in Pacific Palisades, Calif., that killed his friend, Mark Gibello.

“There’s not many templates to go by on something like this,” Haas told the Associated Press in his first interview since the accident. “I was in a state of shock, disbelief. It was a tragic event, traumatic. I’m still unsure how to handle it. I keep going back to focusing on the Gibello family.”

Gibello was driving a Ferrari that hit two two cars — one of which belonged to actor Luke Wilson — before going off the road near Riviera Country Club. The 71-year-old with whom Haas was staying with for the Genesis Open was the accident’s only fatality. Despite sitting in the passenger seat of Gibello’s car, Haas was released from the hospital the following day. He withdrew from the tournament and has practiced or played very little since, according to the AP. But he hopes to find a sense of “relief” once he gets back inside the ropes.

“The amount of love and support and outreach I got from my peers and friends has been amazing,” Haas told the AP. “At the same time, a friend of mine is not here anymore. . . . There’s just no real way to explain life, why it happens and how it happens. You can’t take tomorrow for granted. You have to enjoy today and prepare for tomorrow. All that said, I still feel like I have to go compete. I can’t just say golf doesn’t matter. That’s what I do. I think that’s what Mark would want.”

Bill Haas was injured in a car accident in Pacific Palisades, Calif., on Tuesday evening that left the driver of the vehicle Haas was riding in dead and the driver of the other car involved injured.

The rollover crash involved a Ferrari and a BMW in the 500 block of North Chautauqua Boulevard, just a few miles from Riviera Country Club, where Haas, a six-time PGA Tour winner was scheduled to play in this week’s Genesis Open. The accident took place just before 6:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The driver of the Ferrari, Mark Gibello, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others—one of them the 35-year-old Haas, the other a 50-year-old female from the other vehicle—were taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to the LAFD. Los Angeles Police Department Detective Jeff Fischer told television station KTLA that Haas was the passenger and was “doing OK.“

A third vehicle was also involved when the Ferrari clipped a Toyota FJ SUV just before the crash. According to Fischer, that vehicle was being driven by actor Luke Wilson. He did not sustain serious injury.

UPDATED, Wednesday, Feb. 14, 8:35 a.m.: The PGA Tour and Bill Haas’ manager, Allen Hobbs of Players Group Management, released a statement on Wednesday morning:

“Last night in Pacific Palisades, California, Bill Haas was involved in a serious car accident in which the driver—a member of the family with whom Haas and his family were staying for the Genesis Open—was killed. While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and—more importantly—his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time.“

“Bill will withdraw from the Genesis Open and plans to head home to Greenville to recover. He appreciates the support of friends, family and the golf world as a whole, and he has asked for privacy as he processes what has happened.“

Earlier in the morning, Jay Haas, Bill Haas’ father, told the Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis that Bill was released from an area hospital with no broken bones, but some pain and swelling in his legs. Jay said that Bill is expected to make a full recovery.

Additional reporting from Brian Wacker.

Players will have a 40-second time limit to hit a shot at the June event, as first reported by the Daily Mail.

Here’s how it will work: A referee will follow each group and keep time. The first offense earns a yellow card, but after that, players will be penalized a stroke for each time over 40 seconds.

We’ll see what happens when this is actually enforced, but for now, players seem to be in favor of the move.

“What a brilliant idea, and long overdue,” Lee Westwood told the Daily Mail.

“It underlines how long 40 seconds is to play a shot and how ridiculous it is that rounds take so long,” Andy Sullivan added. “The sooner it’s introduced on tour, the better.”

David Howell, a former Ryder Cupper who heads the European Tour’s tournament committee, told the Times of London this:

“We’ve discussed it and agreed it should take place. Among the committee, we think it’s worthwhile trialling that week in those specific circumstances. The field is not the strongest so it can be shortened without doing anyone too much harm. That allows the opportunity to get around quickly, so that’s why it is that week.”

However, Howell noted that certain recovery shots — like those made famous by Seve Ballesteros — wouldn’t happen under such a strict time restraint. As a result, he doesn’t sound sold on the idea.

“You won’t have time to work out shots like that if you’ve only got 40 seconds, which is a big negative,” Howell said. “We’re not suggesting this is how professional golf should be in the future.”

This isn’t the first time the European Tour has experimented with a shot clock to speed up play. In May, the GolfSixes team event also had a strict 40-second limit, which was enforced when Paul Peterson was hit with a one-shot penalty for taking too long to play a shot. That tournament actually featured a big clock counting down like the NBA does above its backboards.

It was at another team event, this year’s Zurich Classic, in which the PGA Tour handed out its first slow-play penalty since 1995. The pair of Miguel Angel Carballo and Brian Campbell were docked a shot after taking longer than 40 seconds to play a shot twice in their opening round.

Before that, Glen Day in the third round of the 1995 Honda Classic was the last player to get penalized for slow play on the PGA Tour. More recently, 14-year-old Tianlang Guan was penalized for taking too long to play a shot at the 2013 Masters, but that event is run by Augusta National Golf Club and not the PGA Tour.

We’ll have to wait and see what effect the European Tour’s decision for 2018 has — and whether the PGA Tour will do anything to follow suit.

“My dad has said it’s been talked about in player meetings since he was a rookie,” Bill Haas, whose dad, Jay, was a PGA Tour rookie in 1977, told the AP’s Doug Ferguson earlier this year. “What are we going to do about it?”
