Ben Walton

By Dave Shedloski
The shot might have been one of the most forgettable Dustin Johnson struck in the final round of the 2020 Masters on his way to his record-setting five-stroke victory. And yet, just a few weeks ago during a casual round at Augusta National Golf Club with chairman Fred Ridley, Dustin’s brother, Austin, was regaling the chairman with the details of a simple 6-iron layup on the par-5 13th hole.

Ridley, a former U.S. Amateur winner who knows the game as well as anyone, could only shake his head in wonder.

“He loved that story,” said Austin, who was on the bag for his brother last fall during that very unusual Masters—the one absent patrons and roars but which Dustin filled up with satisfaction and emotional recompense.

This particular shot on a partly cloudy Sunday in mid-November would not have provoked roars had spectators been in attendance. Perhaps a few head scratches, but certainly not roars.

After teeing off with his 3-wood on the sharp, sloping dogleg left hole, Johnson casually flushed a chopped-off 6-iron from a sidehill lie in the middle of the fairway that was purposely conservative, never rising above waist high. “Just a little running 6-iron for the layup, just to keep it on the ground,” was how Dustin described the shot in his winner’s press conference.

The choice of shot served two purposes. First, it kept him out of trouble and potentially a grave mistake. “We had a perfect yardage, maybe 240, a perfect 4-iron, but there was mud on the left side of the ball,” Austin said. “That means it’s going to go right, so if we go for the green, we put the water [Rae’s Creek] in play.”

Second, the play at the tail end of Amen Corner made his third shot easier. “There, I cleaned it for you,” Dustin said to his brother as he handed him the club while walking up the fairway.

He wanted it on the ground quickly so the wet turf would clean the ball. Which meant Johnson would have better control of his next stroke, a lob wedge he smoothed to 15 feet, followed by a low, half fist pump when his putt found the heart of the cup for a birdie.

“It was genius,” Austin said. “It was one of the coolest things he’s ever done.”

Few players have exhibited more cool than Dustin Johnson, but his casual demeanour and languid gate hide a fierce competitiveness. Meanwhile, his much-celebrated physical gifts overshadow another aspect of his prowess, something rarely discussed—his golf acumen.

“Dustin’s golf IQ, some of the things he does on the golf course, some of the things he sees, people don’t understand just how well he thinks around a golf course. I’ve known for a long time,” said his manager, David Winkle, who was an outstanding junior player in Texas. “I’ve played golf nearly all of my life, and I’d never heard of that or thought of that. In that moment, under that kind of pressure, to have the clarity of mind to think that way, it’s pretty telling.”

Johnson said Tuesday during a conference call with the media that he was “super focused all week” during the 84th Masters, and the results were quite telling.

They were also emphatic.

JD Cuban
As Johnson cruised to victory in November, he managed to break several Masters scoring records including the low 72-hole score.

With a closing four-under 68, Johnson set the tournament record with a 20-under 268 total, breaking the previous mark shared by Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. “I knew exactly what I was going to do and was able to execute,” he said.

Johnson returned to Augusta National two weeks ago for his first visit since he won the green jacket, the most coveted piece of clothing in golf, even for a guy who has a penchant for filling his closet with high-priced suits. The South Carolina native had grown up an hour from Augusta, and anyone could see how much the victory, his second major to go with his 2016 U.S. Open, meant to the player who is No. 1 in the world but too often had been an also-ran in the biggest events. He just couldn’t hold his emotions in check.

More emotion, mostly pure joy, washed over him during his two-day stay at Augusta National. He and Austin, and their father, Scott, stayed overnight in one of the cabins. Dustin got the chance to wear his green jacket. He found out that he will share a locker with 1979 winner Fuzzy Zoeller in the Champions Locker Room.

“That was pretty cool, first time back,” he said, “going into the Champions Locker Room and stuff. That was a really neat experience. First time I spent the night on the grounds, so that was another, like, cool first-time experience, and had dinner in my green jacket. That was a lot of fun.”

Also fun was the first of two rounds, when some memories from November came flooding back. “I’m pretty sure when I was playing on most of the holes, you know, I was definitely thinking about the shot that I hit on that Sunday when I played.”

That Sunday, Johnson, 36, remembers something else quite vivid and visceral. His nerves. They were churning like never before.

“I was definitely nervous starting the day because obviously it meant so much to me,” he said. “I was feeling it from kind of the time when I woke up. I couldn’t hardly even … couldn’t eat any breakfast, really. Took a couple bites. But it was hard to get down for some reason, which I’ve never had that problem before. And then on the course, too, I remember walking down trying to eat a little bit of an almond butter and jelly sandwich and took one bite and had to wash it down with water, and that was the only way I could get it down.”

JD Cuban
Johnson acknowledged that nerves were a factor when he teed off in the final round last November.

And although his lead dwindled to a single stroke at one juncture, his nerves did not get the best of him, even with his history of disappointments in the majors, including in August when he held the 54-hole lead in the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco but finished second to surging Collin Morikawa.

Johnson pulled away from the pack with three straight birdies starting at, yes, the 13th, where he played a shot his brother couldn’t wait to describe to the Masters chairman.

“Obviously, golf is very mental,” Johnson said. “I think a lot of it is in your head, so with golf and when I’m playing well, yeah, you’re thinking very clearly and you’re making good decisions. But golf is a funny game. So I don’t know how to explain the mental part of it.

“I know my mental game’s pretty strong, but I guess it’s all natural ability. And then I’ve learned a lot of it, too, just through college, playing experiences, whatever it might be, books. Kind of just taking everything I’ve learned along the way, and I tried to make it into my own.”

With a green jacket in his closet, he definitely has come into his own. “It definitely reassures me and [tells me] to myself that I am a very good player, and that, I can win these big golf tournaments,” he said.

“Rory [McIlroy] made a comment that Dustin might be the smartest guy out there,” Winkle said. “And Bryson DeChambeau said he thinks [Dustin] is the smartest guy on tour—and we know how Bryson approaches the game, the thought he puts into it. It’s funny how the dialogue has shifted on Dustin and people are taking noted of it, how smart he is. He’s a complete player.”

And authentic. While McIlroy and Justin Thomas have expressed an appreciation for Johnson’s mental strength—his ability to shake off bad luck, bad bounces and focus on the next shot, the next challenge—Johnson couldn’t think of a single person from whom he has taken his cues. But, then, it’s almost counterintuitive to think about how to think. It has to come from within. In the end, you have to be yourself because you can’t rely on anyone else anyway.

“No, not really that I’ve thought about,” he said when asked who might have influenced his approach. “I feel like what I’m doing has been working pretty well, so I’m going to stick with it until it’s not. I don’t know, didn’t really answer your question very well.”

It’s OK. Last November, he answered all the important questions ever asked of him.

By Alex Myers
Welcome to another edition of The Grind where we’re guessing the green jacket is about to go on its wildest tour ever. Less than 24 hours after slipping it on, Dustin Johnson had already partied it up in Florida, then hopped on a private jet to St. Barts. Not exactly Ben Hogan’s itinerary when he won his first green jacket in 1951. Johnson hasn’t been spotted wearing his new prized possession anywhere else yet, but you know it has to be in tow:

Even Austin Johnson’s Masters caddie bib is making the rounds—with The Great One getting a taste.

We just hope Johnson doesn’t have to return his coveted coat in April. Getting to keep it for only five months doesn’t seem fair—for both DJ and those following along on Instagram.

WE’RE BUYING

Robotic Dustin Johnson: What a clinic this guy put on at Augusta National. What a heater he’s been on the past few months. And he barely even gives a fist pump. Amazing. We’ve had plenty of World No. 1s the past few years, but Johnson is the undisputed heavyweight champ heading into 2021 following a record-breaking Masters win that caps a brilliant run of six top-two finishes in his past seven starts (the other start was a T-6 at the U.S. Open NBD).

Ben Walton

More importantly, Johnson got a big—and dare I say, deserved—boost to what was already a Hall-of-Fame resume. With his latest spurt that also includes a FedEx Cup and a second PGA Tour Player of the Year Award, Johnson now has essentially the same accomplishments (24 PGA Tour wins and two majors) as Johnny Miller. Based on his personality, we’re not projecting the same broadcasting career as Johnny, but you get the point. He’s among the greats. And at 36, he’s not nearly finished adding to that résumé.

RELATED: Dustin Johnson’s play in 2020 redefines his golf legacy

Emotional Dustin Johnson: We joke about Johnson’s robotic-like reactions, but after everyone flipped away to watch football, he returned to the 18th green donning his new green jacket and finally showed he’s human. These tears were real—and they were spectacular. Kudos to CBS’ Amanda Balionis for handling it so well.

Winning the Masters is a dream come true for Dustin Johnson. pic.twitter.com/2gGJ9HuMSJ

Wow. . . It’s getting DUSTY in here!

WE’RE SELLING

Tiger Woods’ 10: As Tiger deposited an entire sleeve of Bridgestones into Rae’s Creek, there was one thought that kept running through my head: Thank goodness this didn’t happen on Sunday last year. In other words, SAY AMEN AT THE CORNER!

Ben Walton

But seriously, that was pretty wild. A year after everyone around Woods got wet on No. 12, Tiger recorded the worst score of his career. Of course, he proceeded to birdie five of his final six holes because he’s the freaking GOAT. Hopefully, aspiring golfers—and some of his fellow tour pros—were taking notes. Despite that 10, TIGAH WOODS WAS ONE UNDAH! And while we’re sad we can no longer refer to Tiger as the defending Masters champ, there’s this:

Bubba Watson
2012: won Masters
2013: made 10 on 12th hole on Sunday
2014 won Masters

Tiger Woods
2019: won Masters
2020: made 10 on 12th hole on Sunday
2021: ?

It's science?

— Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) November 15, 2020

So you’re telling me there’s a chance. . .

RELATED: How Tiger Woods turned a 10 on a par 3 into an inspired performance

Playing behind Bryson: Already known as one of the more, um, deliberate players on the PGA Tour, now you have to wait for him to go for every par 5 in two and try to drive any par 4 under 400 yards because HE HITS THE BALL LIKE A GORILLA! And then there are the search parties caused by his erratic misses. After Friday’s round, Jon Rahm was asked if he was involved in the search for Bryson’s golf ball. Rahm’s response? “Which one?”

"This place plays like a par 67 for me." pic.twitter.com/JYKHOQqk3F

— Alex Myers (@AlexMyers3) November 12, 2020

Well played, Jon. JON RAHM IS DA BOMB! Although, the next day he hit a punch shot backward off a tree and into some bushes setting off another search party. The golf gods are always listening.

Suspenders: Arguing about hoodies on the golf course seems like a distant memory after watching Sandy Lyle navigate Augusta National looking like a bank teller from the 19th century. That being said, the 1987 Masters champ had a good reason for wearing the suspenders, which are apparently called “braces” in the U.K. (the more you know).

Rob Carr

“I do it because I am so fed up with my shirts coming out and coming down here and constantly having to tuck it in,” Lyle said. “And when it’s so warm like this and you’ve got grubby hands, you tuck your shirt in, you pull your hand out and the shirt comes with it.”

TMI, Sandy. Let’s just agree that if you’re over 60 and a Masters champ, then you can wear whatever you want. I don’t think Chris Vernon ever addressed the suspenders, but he did say LARRY MIZE FOUGHT IN WORLD WAR II when he found out he was two under. Maybe next time.

ON TAP

The PGA Tour heads to the RSM Classic, AKA that tournament I attended last year and expensed a lot of BBQ and milkshakes. Sadly, I will not be at Sea Island Golf Club this year, but it’s actually a really good field thanks to the proximity to Augusta National. WHERE IS CHARLEY HOFFMAN?! We missed the perennial early-round leader at the Masters, but he’ll be back in action this week.

Random tournament fact: When Tyler Duncan beat Webb Simpson in a playoff last year, it was his first win anywhere on any level since the 2011 Indiana Amateur. We’re pretty sure he’s the first player in history to pull off that elusive double.

RANDOM PROP BETS OF THE WEEK

—I will consume more calories this week than during last year’s RSM: 1 MILLION-to-1 odds
—Dustin Johnson will lose the green jacket in the Caribbean: 3-to-1 odds
—Dustin Johnson will not be playing golf for the next few days: LOCK

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Huge shout-out to Grind producer Ben Walton for a big week of TAKING PICS ON THE COURSE! Here was my favourite:

Good lord, that thing is massive. A T-REX IS ON THE COURSE! A T-REX IS ON THE COURSE!

THIS WEEK IN PROS ARE JUST LIKE US! (SORT OF)

Tyrrell Hatton let everyone in on quite a tale from his Augusta rental house. “We actually rented the house in 2018, so it’s quite nice kind of going back to something that feels familiar. I just hope that my manager doesn’t leave a knife in the oven this year and melt it.” Hatton added that they left an awkward note and money for a new knife set. Wow. TYRRELL’S MANAGER ALWAYS MELTIN’! OK, so Chris Vernon didn’t say that, but he did say, “PAUL CASEY ALWAYS SMILIN’!” And he’s right. Even when he’s in trouble on the course, Paul Casey is always smiling.

THIS WEEK IN TOUR PRO PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION

YO DJ, WHERE PAULINA AT?! Actually, we all saw where she was as she rushed the 18th green after Johnson had officially won. Unofficially, she’s believed to be the first WAG to do that at Augusta National. What a trailblazer! And they walked off into the sunset hand in hand. Sort of.

Rob Carr

Awww. Notice also how Paulina was rocking a green jacket of her own. Talk about having confidence in her man.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Favourite tradition . . . For me, I don’t know if it’s really a tradition, but my favourite thing about the Masters is the sandwiches.” —Dustin Johnson. Loved this response, but I’ve got a feeling he might answer differently if asked the same question in April.

THIS AND THAT

Kirk Herbstreit says he turned down Tom Izzo’s invite to play Augusta National three times. And suddenly, I’m questioning whether to remain a Kirk Herbstreit fan. . . . The PGA Tour will be going to Delaware for the first time with the 2022 BMW Championship moving to Wilmington Country Club. All I can think of is Wayne’s World: “Hi, I’m in . . . Delaware.” . . . The Masters had its lowest final-round TV ratings since 1957 proving once again that it’s tough to compete with the NFL—and Tiger in contention. Also, if you listened to last week’s Local Knowledge podcast on Augusta National’s history, you’d know the Masters has been televised since 1956. Speaking of that podcast. . . Not to toot our own horns, well, actually, definitely to toot our own horns, but that podcast reached No. 1 on the charts!

How long did we stay there? I have no clue. But we’ll always have that moment. Thanks for listening. OK, now where do we go to accept the golf podcast green jacket?

RANDOM QUESTIONS TO PONDER

How many majors will Dustin Johnson wind up winning?
Is Dustin Johnson the first Masters champ who can dunk?
Is Tom Izzo looking for someone to play Augusta National with him?

DJ’s swing is mostly self-taught
Dustin grew up watching the swings of other golfers at Weed Hill Driving Range in Columbia, S.C., and applied it to his own game. His father, Scott, was a club pro, and took DJ to the range when he was 6. “Little DJ had a swing with rhythm and tempo, and he could hit the fool out of the ball,” facility operator and teaching pro Jimmy Koosa told our Jaime Diaz.

Dustin’s coach is Butch Harmon’s son, Claude Harmon III
His swing isn’t completely homegrown. DJ worked a lot on his posture, setup and balance in college. He worked a lot on making his swing more efficient with Butch Harmon, and now works with Butch’s son, Claude Harmon III.

Photo By: This content is subject to copyright.

A distinct swing characteristic: Johnson’s bowed wrist
Johnson has always had a bowed left wrist at the top of his backswing. His clubface is typically shut to the target line, which might be a no-no to conventional golf instruction, but as Butch Harmon said in a 2012 article in Golf Digest: “That’s his thing. We don’t touch it.” To offset the bowed wrist, Johnson turns powerfully through the ball.

Johnson is no stranger to bizarre rules scenarios
He nearly won the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, but was hit with a two-shot penalty for grounding his club in a waste bunker. He missed a playoff with Martin Kaymer and Bubba Watson by two shots.

Johnson has a win in his first 10 straight seasons
Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer are the only other players to do so. Not bad company.

No surprise: Dustin’s power stats put him at the top of the PGA Tour
You’ll appreciate his talent through these his power analytics: His driving distance in 2016 was 310.1 yards, second on the PGA Tour; ball speed at 181.40 mph, sixth-best on tour; clubhead speed at 122.08, ranking eighth.

Johnson’s only the fourth player ever to finish runner-up at the U.S. Open and win it the next year
After his three-putt on the 72nd hole in 2015 at Chambers Bay, DJ followed up the second-place finish with a win at Oakmont. He joins only Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods as the only other players to follow up a second-place at a U.S. Open with a win the next year.

Johnson’s engaged to Paulina Gretzky
Paulina, daughter of the Great One, Wayne Gretzky, and DJ have been inseparable since 2013.They have two sons, Tatum and River.

His peers not only vote Johnson as the most talented golfer on tour, but also the most athletic
In our 2015 survey, Dustin Johnson narrowly edged out Gary Woodland as the most athletic golfer on tour.

Johnson took a leave of absence from golf in 2014
He announced his decision was “To seek professional help for personal challenges.” Golf.com cited unnamed sources that Johnson had been suspended for failing a third drug test. Johnson denies those reports and cites off-course stress perpetuated his excessive drinking and partying.

Johnson had his share of off-the-course trouble when he was younger
At age 16, DJ was convicted of second-degree burglary of a handgun in a 2001 incident. He was later pardoned. In 2009, he was arrested for DUI, which was dismissed when he pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

His grandma played a huge part in choosing Coastal Carolina for college
DJ’s paternal grandmother, Carole Jones, called Coastal Carolina men’s golf coach Allen Terrell to explain how badly Dustin wanted to play college golf. DJ was going to Midlands Technical College in Columbia to make up credits, but after the call from Johnson’s grandma, Terrell went to Coastal Carolina’s president, explained the situation and got him into school.

Dustin’s father, Scott Johnson, was a South Carolina All-State wide receiver for tiny Chapin High School
That explains part of DJ’s athleticism. In addition, DJ’s grandfather, Art Whisnant, is a former All-ACC basketball player at South Carolina. Johnson can dunk easily, and beat former NBA pro Shane Battier in a three-point shooting contest in 2015.

DJ’s younger brother, Austin, is his caddie
Dustin initially had Joe LaCava, Tiger Woods’ current caddie, and Bobby Brown on the bag. Austin and Dustin are very close, with DJ calling him his “best friend” at the U.S. Open. Austin affectionally refers to Dustin as “Chia Pet,” for being able to grow a beard within a week.

JOHANNES EISELE

By Alex Myers
As golf fans are well aware, Dustin Johnson has had two of the more famous rules run-ins in recent golf history. There was the accidental grounding of his club in a waste bunker that cost him the 2010 PGA Championship and the accidental micro-moving of his golf ball that nearly cost him the 2016 U.S. Open. So with a major revision of golf’s rules taking effect at the start of this year, it made sense that the former World No. 1 was asked if he’s stayed abreast of the changes. And — perhaps, not surprisingly — it doesn’t sound like he has.

Here’s an exchange Johnson had at his Wednesday press conference ahead of this week’s Sentry Tournament of Champions, where DJ is the defending champ:

Q. I know you joked about it there at the start but have you paid any attention to the rules changes or how much effort have you put into looking at what the changes will be?

DUSTIN JOHNSON: I actually just looked at it for like a minute upstairs before I came down. They’ve got a big poster in the locker room. Yeah.

Here’s the poster to which Johnson is referring:

Posted on the wall in the locker room at @GolfatKapalua for @Sentry_TOC participants. Handy review of new #RulesofGolf. Love the grade school review of “areas of the golf course” and how water hazards now known as penalty areas. I think guys can figure this out on their own. pic.twitter.com/eXDJjPT6uD

— Dave Shedloski (@DaveShedloski) January 1, 2019

The follow-up question asked Johnson about his brother and caddie, Austin:

Q. Austin? Has he had instruction —

DUSTIN JOHNSON: I had one of the TOUR officials do a printout that I’m going to give to him to study later on today.

Q. How is that going to go?
DUSTIN JOHNSON: Probably not very well. (Laughter.)

But I’m going to have to look at it a little bit.

To be fair to the Johnson brothers, they had a wedding to deal with this off-season. Still, you’d expect one of the game’s best players to do more than “look at it a little bit” when it comes to the new rules. Especially, when that player has such an eventful history when it comes to the game’s rules.

RELATED: 14 ways your golf game can benefit from the new rules

In any event, Johnson begins his title defense at Kapalua’s Plantation Course at 12:40 local time on Thursday. And in Bryson DeChambeau he’s at least got the perfect playing partner if he has any questions.

By Dave Shedloski
SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – Austin Johnson has seen his brother Dustin subdue a golf course with his raw-boned power more than a few times in their six years together, including two years ago at fearsome Oakmont Country Club when Dustin captured the U.S. Open with pugilistic antipathy.

On Thursday at Shinnecock Hills, he saw something different, something that should give pause to the rest of the field in the 118th U.S. Open. Dustin Johnson wasn’t afraid to back off on tee shots to make sure he hit fairways. He played more percentages. He refused to surrender to the conditions and scrambled with a steely defiance. His putting was impeccable.

“I’ve never seen him more focused and in control,” Austin, his caddy for the last six years, noted.

Control wasn’t in ample supply to the field on a wind-blown opening day, but Austin was referring to the self-control his brother exhibited amid the challenging conditions. Despite hitting just nine greens in regulation, Dustin Johnson carded one of four sub-par rounds at Shinnecock, a oe-under 69 that gave him a share of the lead in the U.S. Open.

Related: The U.S. Open is a brute once more

Coming off a convincing six-stroke victory last week in the FedEx St. Jude Classic, a victory that restored him to No. 1 in the world rankings, Johnson is attempting to become the first player to win the U.S. Open the week after a PGA Tour conquest.

He seems poised to do it. It already looks like his championship to lose, given the way he has played all season, finishing no worse than T-17 in 10 starts while winning twice to run his career victory total to 18. Add to that his solid U.S. Open resume—last year’s missed cut being an aberration—and Johnson looks like the favorite everyone expected, even if he didn’t play like everyone expected.

“I definitely think I played well,” Johnson, 33, agreed, “but I also can play better.”

He definitely could have scored worse, but the key to the day was the start. While playing partner Tiger Woods mangled the opening hole for a triple bogey, Johnson saved par from the right bunker with an 11-foot putt. He saved pars on Nos. 2 and 3 as well. He turned in two-under 33 despite hitting just three greens in regulation.

“I kept myself from getting down early, which was huge,” he said in that low-key manner that belied his satisfaction in the accomplishment.

He birdied the next two holes and then got a break at the sixth when his drive bounded into the high fescue. A mad search ensued, but ended with relief when former PGA champion Rich Beem, working for Sky Sports and helping in the hunt, accidentally stepped on Johnson’s ball. His free drop found a tough lie, but he was able to make a bogey. Two holes later, after a thoroughly awful wedge, Johnson holed out for birdie from the left-front bunker, the ball rattling off the flag stick and circling the hole before dropping.

He didn’t save every mistake, but his pars on the closing two holes were hard-earned and valuable. There was a suggestion that finishing with a share of the lead was as good as the outright advantage, from a psychological standpoint.

Johnson wasn’t going there. “Tomorrow is still going to be another difficult day,” he responded. “Every day out here is going to be difficult, and, you know, it’s going to take the same kind of focus, and, I’ll have to shoot the same kind of quality golf shots if I want to shoot another good score.”

It wasn’t easy discerning exactly which shots were quality. The wind played havoc with everyone and angered more than a few. Fuses blew. Flubs were common. But nothing seemed to bother Dustin Johnson. Not very much on his scorecard, and not at all on his psyche.

He exhibited the same calm and casual disposition that won him the 2016 championship amid a potential rules infraction that hung over his head down the stretch. This despite the fact he wasn’t quite on his game.

If he plays only slightly better, he’ll be tough to beat. And everyone knows it.
