If you include the inaugural Saudi Ladies Team International in November 2020, the Aramco Team Series 2023 season-ender in Riyadh will be the 15th event in this innovative new concept’s run.

While the series, which sees an individual strokeplay competition and team tournament run concurrently, has grown in popularity on and off the course and has attracted some of the world’s biggest names in women’s golf, Anne van Dam probably knows the format better than most.

The Dutch star was runner-up at that first event at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club in King Abdullah Economic City in 2020 and has been an almost ever-present since, watching the ATS evolve over the years first-hand.

“The event has grown tremendously since 2020,” she told Golf Digest Middle East recently. “Back then it was relatively new for everyone. But it has been great to play as part of a team — also adding the amateur was something really new we hadn’t seen on tour — and that aspect has really grown on all the players over the past three years.”

The ATS’ global reach has expanded year on year, adding new destinations to help spread awareness of the series and the game of golf.

“I think it is always good to play in new venues and it is important to showcase the Aramco Team Series and our players in as many places as possible,” Van Dam said, while also praising some of the continuity in place. “I also like that some of the venues have stayed the same — London for example — as it allows you to see the growth as more and more people come out every year. But I really love all the new additions: Singapore, Hong Kong, Sotogrande. To keep adding these new locations all around the world is super exciting for us as players and I hope over the coming years to keep adding more and more venues to the schedule and bringing new players to the game.”

The Golf Saudi Ambassador added: “I have done clinics at the past couple of events and they are a super fun way to bring a lot of together. To give girls a chance to try golf when they normally would not consider it is great and the Aramco Team Series has been a great opportunity for that.

“I do see myself as a role model to grow the game for kids and women around the world. It is great to see those enthusiastic faces around the golf course watching me, and the clinics and media events are powerful tools.”

As the Aramco Team Series prepares for its 2023 finale in Saudi Arabia, 27-year-old Van Dam is keen to chalk off another new destination on her travels — and even get her tourist hat on.

“I have actually never been to Riyadh so I am excited,” she said. “I have heard many awesome things about the city and course so hopefully we can explore a bit. I have been to Jeddah and Royal Greens a few times and I am ready and excited for a new course and a new venue — especially to be there with the Aramco Team Series.”

Van Dam burst on to the professional golfing scene towards the end of 2018 when she went on a hot streak that saw her pick up four titles in just over a year — a run of form she feels she is rediscovering in 2023 having just missed out on the Irish Open title this summer.

“I have been playing really well this past while, getting close to a handful of wins,” she said. “Unfortunately I have not been able to get it over the line, but my game is good and I am getting closer to those wins. I am definitely hoping for an Aramco win — hopefully this year and in the years to come. One thing that drives me on out on the course is to finish the year strong and get another win under my belt.”

It was a flawless first day for world No. 3 Ko, who struck eight birdies at Hong Kong Golf Club.

The Korean star got off to a hot start birdieing the first hole before adding further birdies on four and five before she made three on the trot on holes seven through nine to make the turn in 30.

Ko added two more birdies on the back to seal an opening round of 65 and lead by two shots on eight-under-par.

“I practised a lot in September, and I worked out a lot too, even though I wasn’t playing,” said the two-time Major champion. “I wanted to play in one of these events and I’m really happy to be in Hong Kong and playing in a team event.

“I hit just 20 balls today and sometimes I don’t practise before teeing off or I just do putting. In Hong Kong, it’s really hot so I just wanted to keep my energy for the tee off.

“If I could win, it would be my first win on the LET which would be an honour. That is motivating me and I have two more rounds to go, so I hope to get some more birdies.”

In the Team competition, it is Anne van Dam’s quartet at the top of the leaderboard on 16-under.

The quartet of Van Dam, Sophie Witt, Lydia Hall and amateur Andrew Hibbert began on the back nine and it was a good start for the team with Witt making an eagle on the 11th and the team were four-under after the 18th hole.

However, it was on their back nine where they really made in-roads producing a score of 12-under through their final 11 holes to reach -16 and lead by three shots.

“We all had plenty of birdies out there today, which was great,” said captain Van Dam. “The course is definitely scoreable which makes it fun to play and I had a super fun day playing with the team.”

Hall explained: “We ham and egged it a little bit, I was out on a couple of the holes and the girls took lead and did what they needed to do. They both played so well, especially Anne, she had it on a string and it was impressive to watch.”

Witt added: “We are playing with Anne! So, when I see all the par-5s, it’s a great opportunity for the team and we have a lot of chances as well.”

In the Individual competition, Van Dam is chasing a remarkable double as she sits in second place on six-under having fired a 67 in Hong Kong.

The Dutch star made an eagle on the ninth, as well as six birdies and two bogeys on her first day to put herself in contention in both competitions.

Spain’s Nuria Iturrioz sits in third on the Individual leaderboard on five-under-par having produced an opening round of 68 which included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Team Iturrioz is also doing well as they are one of four teams in a tie for second place on 13-under-par.

The quartet of captain Iturrioz, fellow Spaniard Maria Hernandez, Norway’s Maiken Bing Paulsen and amateur Xiao Guang Wu combined well on day one.

“It’s good vibes only in this team, it was great and a fantastic day,” said Iturrioz. “The amateur was really nice also, he played really well.

“I did my best, I tried. We played like a team because when someone missed the other was there. I’m really happy with them and let’s go for tomorrow.”

Hernandez explained: “Today wasn’t one of my best days but we’re lucky we had Nuria on the team and she led us, we had a great time. It was fun and we had a great day.

Paulsen added: “We had a great time today. The course is great. Maria and I are coming back stronger tomorrow but as a team, we did really good and we were cheering on each other, we made a couple of good saves and will be trying to do even better tomorrow.”

Team Iturrioz are joined in a share of second place on 13-under-par by Team Alonso, Team Gainer and Team Ciganda.

“I didn’t play good but Kirsten [Rudgeley] played really really good, so I’m happy for her,” said Carmen Alonso.

“I think she put a lot of effort in and myself and Flic [Johnson] tried to support her. Tomorrow, I hope it is going to be better and we can make more birdies and we can help her and do good as a team.”

Cara Gainer said: “Chloe [Williams] got our first eagle on the first hole, we played back to front, so an amazing iron in there and I luckily eagled the ninth hole, so really enjoyed it.

“I feel like we all didn’t have our A-games today, if we can all go out there with slightly better golf tomorrow then there’s plenty of birdie opportunities out there, especially with five par-5s. I’m really optimistic about tomorrow.”

Solheim Cup winner and captain Carlota Ciganda said: “We had a very nice team, the amateur played amazing. She was great and she came in on a few holes and it was great that she was motivated and excited to be there. I like the course, I played good just too many bogeys and one double but six birdies, so we will see tomorrow.”

Team Pettersson and Team Davidson Spilkova sit one shot further back in a tie for sixth place, while there are five teams in T8 on 11-under.

On the Individual leaderboard, China’s Xiyu Lin and Australia’s Stephanie Kyriacou are in a share of fourth place on four-under behind Ko, Van Dam and Iturrioz.

There are 10 players in a tie for ninth place on two-under-par including 2021 Individual champion from Sotogrande Alison Lee, as well as 2023 LET winners Trichat Cheenglab and Lisa Pettersson.

World No. 3 Jin Young Ko, Chinese star Muni He, Solheim Cup star Carlota Ciganda, Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan and Dutch star Anne van Dam are among the stars set to take to the course this weekend.

Ahead of the Aramco Team Series debut in Hong Kong later this week, Muni said: “I am so excited to be here this week. I love playing in the Aramco Team Series. I played it once two years ago in Spain, and it was so much fun, so I’m very excited to be back, especially in Hong Kong, a place very close to where I’m from. I used to come here with my parents when I was younger, so it feels really lovely to be back, and I’m very excited.”

The Hong Kong event brings together 28 teams, each comprised of three professional golfers and an amateur player, in a team competition that runs alongside an individual stroke play event. Over the course of three days, players will compete for a prize fund of $1 million, setting a record as the largest fund ever assembled for a ladies’ professional golf tournament in Hong Kong.

We honestly wouldn’t have believed it if we didn’t see it. But, yes, this actually happened. A Ladies European Tour pro had her driver accidentally snapped by a gallery rope while getting a ride to a playoff hole. Talk about a nightmare scenario for a golfer.

OK, let’s set the scene at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open. Anne Van Dam was coming off a closing birdie to get into a playoff with Smilla Tarning Soenderby and Lisa Pettersson when she hopped in a golf cart with a tournament official to ride back to the 18th tee. At one point, the cart slowed down as Van Dam lifted a gallery rope so they could drive under. But the 27-year-old Dutch golfer let go of the rope a bit too early and it caught around her driver. As the cart continued, the club’s head was snapped clean off.

No, really. This actually happened. Watch the crazy situation that might be the worst break (literally) in golf history:

Wow how unfortunate is this and I’m lost for words @Annevandam driver snapped heading back to the 18th @GolfDromoland for playoff @LETgolf ? @KPMG pic.twitter.com/CR2klQY2JW

How ‘bout that? Brutal stuff. We haven’t seen anyone get victimised by a gallery rope like that since Bryson DeChambeau’s self-inflicted knockout last year. And it got worse minutes later when Van Dam lost on the first extra hole to Soenderby.

According to Ryan French, AKA Monday Q Info on Twitter, Van Dam teed off on the par 5 with her 3-wood instead. However, the five-time LET winner actually still had a great look at eagle after a brilliant approach shot.

What an approach from Vam Dam ?#RaiseOurGame | #WIO2023 pic.twitter.com/E89iNjDw7J

But she couldn’t convert the putt. Meanwhile, Soenderby produced a walk-off eagle to earn her maiden LET title.

Smilla Tarning Soenderby wins the @KPMGWomensOpen with an eagle on the first playoff hole after posting a final round 62 (-10) ?

As for Van Dam, we guess it just wasn’t meant to be her day week. She was allowed to replace the club in that situation, but she didn’t. Why? Well, you’re not going to believe this either.

It somehow gets worse.

On her way to the tournament Anne Van Dam’s main driver….was broken by the airline on her way to the event. This was her backup.

Remember back in 2020 when LPGA and PGA Tour pros were posting about the Peloton workouts they were doing? And if you’re into Peloton, you probably checked out their output numbers and realised: “Dang, some of these golfers have very solid cardio abilities!” Well, if you were impressed by Rory McIlroy’s Peloton numbers, get ready to be floored by what Anne van Dam did in December. The 27-year-old from the Netherlands who has played on the LPGA and Ladies European Tours completed an Ironman 70.3.

RELATED: Van Dam targets double impact in New York

Also known as a Half Ironman, the Ironman 70.3 is three gruelling cardiovascular tests. Competitors start with a 1.2-mile swim, then hop on their bikes for a 56-mile ride, and wrap up the race with a 13.1-mile run. Van Dam completed the race in 6 hours and 8 minutes, finishing right in the middle of her age group. Just six days prior, she finished the final round of the Andalucia Open De Espana, coming in a tie for 10th at the LET event.

Here she is, smiling her way through the finish at the Ironman:

To make her accomplishment even more impressive, she did it as a fundraiser for fellow LPGA player, Jane Park. Park and her husband, Pete Godfrey, who is a caddie on the LPGA, have one child together, Grace. In 2021, Grace was 10 months old and had to be hospitalised for seizures. She suffered brain damage. Since then, Park has dedicated her life to finding the best care for Grace. She shares a lot about their journey on her Instagram. Unfortunately, not everything Grace needs is covered by insurance, so Van Dam saw an opportunity to help. She raised $15,500 for Grace and her family.

Dutch star Anne van Dam will take a one-stroke lead into the final round of the KPMG Women’s Irish Open at Dromoland Castle after a third-round 70 kept her ahead of the chasing pack.

Van Dam star began her day with a birdie at the first before making a bogey on the second, but rolled in birdies at four and six to make the turn in 33 .

Despite two more dropped shots on the back nine, Van Dam also made two birdies at 15 and 16 for a round of two-under and to put her on 11-under-par at the top of the leaderboard.

MORE: Van Dam targets double impact in New York
Treasure Island: Dromoland Castle is a sight to behold

“It was a crazy day,” she said. “It was definitely playing the toughest out of the three days so far, it was colder and very gusty and windy.

“Plus, the wind was in a slightly different direction, so I was guessing a little bit on some shots. It didn’t work out the best for me but that’s golf and it’s also golf that after a round like this you can still be leading.

“Overall, I think they did a good job with where they put the pins and where the tees were. There were definitely chances out there even though it was so windy. Maybe I’m a little bit disappointed that I didn’t get a few more in, but what can I say I tried my best every shot and this is where I ended up.”

It’s a stacked leaderboard behind the five-time LET winner with six players tied for second place on 10-under with one round left of the tournament.

Sweden’s Jessica Karlsson produced a great round of 67 on day three to move just one shot behind the leader while it was also a good day for England’s Annabel Dimmock who shot a 68.

The duo are joined by Denmark’s Nicole Broch Estrup, Finland’s Ursula Wikstrom, Spain’s Carmen Alonso and Sweden’s halfway leader Moa Folke.

“It’s a really nice place, the course is in really good condition and the weather is typically Irish,” Broch Estrup, the 2015 Helsingborg Open champion, said. “Today was challenging, it was a little bit colder and a little bit windier plus that was in a different direction as well.

“This morning I knew it was going to be a tough day for me because playing up there is not something I’m used to lately but I’m really proud of my effort out there. I was not hitting a whole lot of fairways and greens, but I was grinding my way to a round of two-under.”

Six players are just two shots off the lead in a share of eighth place at the end of the third round including home favourite Leona Maguire, who fired the best round of the day with a 65 to move to nine-under.

Maguire sits alongside Austrian duo Sarah Schober and Christine Wolf, England’s Felicity Johnson, Czechia’s Klara Spilkova and Denmark’s Smilla Tarning Soenderby.

Dutch star eager to get back in winner’s circle at Aramco Team Series in New York — with two titles to play for

By Matt Smith
Following one of the most dramatic competitions on the Ladies European Tour this season, it is fair to say the Aramco Team Series (ATS) — New York event has a lot to live up to.

Ahead of the return to the States in October for its second staging of the innovative team tournament, it was two Americans — and two sisters — who lit up the $1 million Spanish leg of the ATS.

Nelly and Jessica Korda fought out an engrossing tug-of-war over three days at La Reserva Club in Sotogrande on their first ever visit to Spain, with younger sibling and world No. 3 Nelly prevailing. Jessica looked out of reach having opened up a six-stroke lead after the first two days, but Nelly’s class once again shone through as she reeled in her sister over the final 18 holes to pick up her 10th professional title.

Jess had the consolation of claiming the team tournament alongside Tereza Melecka, Noora Komulainen and amateur Malcolm Borwick in Sotogrande, and both Kordas will be aiming to get their names on the trophies once again in New York at Ferry Point.

Jessica is a two-time winning captain on the ATS, having also claimed the team event in New York last year and, while she will be determined to defend that title, there will be no shortage of competition standing in her way with as many as 29 other team captains also out for glory.

One such skipper is Anne Van Dam, the Dutch 2019 Solheim Cup winner who is known for her monster drives, and is looking forward to getting back to New York, and a new venue at Ferry Point.

“It is such a great event — all of the Aramco Team Series events are, and I can’t wait to get out and try the format on a new course at Trump Ferry Point,” Van Dam, who has won three of her five LET titles in Spain, told Golf Digest Middle East from Sotogrande.

The ATS was launched last year, with backing from Golf Saudi and Aramco, offering attractive prize money and extensive broadcast coverage — two things that have been lacking in the ladies game until recently. Van Dam, something of an ATS ‘veteran’ now, is thrilled to see how the tournament has grown in such a short time and how it has added to the LET experience.

“Aramco is such a huge add,” the 26-year-old said. “I played in the first ATS event in Bangkok last year and to see how it has grown and the set-up has improved is amazing. Every week it is getting better, and New York will be no different.

“To me any ATS week is a bit like the majors, the way we are treated, our caddies are treated, the whole set-up, it is amazing and I love it.”

The Kordas appearance in Spain also shows how the series — where players compete individually and as teams of four in two parallel tournaments — is growing globally.

“I play alongside them a lot on the LPGA and they are good friends. It is cool to see them and other big names coming out here for these events as it shows how these team events are helping promote the game — ladies, men and amateurs — and ensure a bright and entertaining future. With guys like the Kordas coming along, it can only be a good thing.”

Van Dam is a Golf Saudi ambassador and was thrilled to hear that young Dubai-based golfer Chiara Noja has also signed up to represent Golf Saudi and help promote the game.

“It is quite a new thing for me still, but it really is a cool partnership, as you get to compete in world-class events and take part in some fun media events, all the while inspiring the next generation of players — especially young females — to get into the game,” Van Dam said.

“That is really why we are all here doing this at the end of the day. With Chiara, I will help her enjoy every moment and she should really be able to connect with and inspire the younger players out there.”

While Van Dam has yet to get back in the winner’s circle since the Covid-19 pandemic, she insists she is not far away.

“I have been playing really consistent on the LET and LPGA and have had some good results,” she said. “The travel can be tough at times but I always give my all and I aim to finish the 2022 season strong to get myself into contention for another win.”

With four top-10s on the LET so far this season, a trip to New York could be just what Van Dam needs to get her hands on another trophy — even if those pesky Kordas are there.

The Aramco Team Series — Sotogrande is shaping up to be the ultimate teaser for the 2023 Solheim Cup, with a host of big-name Europeans joining the likes of US stars Nelly and Jessica Korda on the Spanish coast next month.

Triple-major-winner Anna Nordqvist of Sweden leads the latest big names announced for the $1million tournament, where the hero of the 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles – England’s Bronte Law – will also compete.

They will be joined by Team Europe captain Catriona Matthew, plus fellow legend Laura Davies. Nanna Koertz Madsen of Denmark and Matilda Castren of Finland – both 2021 Solheim Cup-winning rookies – will also play, as will Team Europe alumni, Anne Van Dam of the Netherlands.

+Caroline Masson, a regular mainstay on the European Solheim Cup team with four appearances in the last 10 years, is another star name to commit to Sotogrande, alongside AIG Women’s Open champion and fellow German, Sophia Popov.

At La Reserva Club, located just 20km from Finca Cortesin, host venue of next year’s Solheim Cup, that European field will come up against a US pack led by the Korda sisters — former world No. 1 Nelly and six-time LPGA winner Jessica — and featuring the likes of defending Aramco Team Series — Sotogrande individual champion Alison Lee, Lindsey Weaver-Wright and record-breaker Kelly Whaley, whose eight birdies in a row during competition play earlier this year set a new LET benchmark.

The Aramco Team Series returns to Spain with its mixed team and individual format for the second year in a row, taking place August 18-20.

Bronte Law, who claimed the individual title at last month’s Aramco Team Series London event, said: “It should be quite the week. These Aramco Team Series events are so different to the golf we usually play. There’s something about competing both as a team and as a solo golfer at the same time that I feel almost brings out the best in a lot of us, so I can’t wait to get out on that first tee and under way in another one next month.

“The quality of the field really does speak for itself. I think some of us would be lying if we said we won’t be thinking about being back in this part of the world a year later for the Solheim. It’ll be a chance for quite a number of the players competing to go out and show what they’re made of and I’m looking forward to it.”

Matthew — who Law has chosen as her captain’s pick at no fewer than three previous Aramco Team Series events — said: “When the ATS events were first added to the LET calendar last year, we were told they wanted to try to raise women’s golf as best they could. I don’t think anyone can argue in saying that they really have done that and then some.

“Every tournament comes with a real air of grandeur, they are so well organised and the prize money is obviously fantastic, too. But it’s the golf side of it that I think us as players enjoy the most. Playing as a team is something we do rarely but is a format that brings so much added excitement and opportunity, for us as players and for those watching live or on TV. The vibe of these events in particular is so different, and we really love being part of them.”

Further big names announced include Australian Steph Kyriacou, Pia Babnik of Slovenia and Linn Grant of Sweden, who is currently sitting second in the LET’s Race to Costa del Sol rankings and in June became the first ever woman to win on the men’s DP World Tour with victory in the Volvo Scandinavian Mixed.

They will join a packed field that will also feature a host of Spanish stars, including Solheim Cup hero Carlota Ciganda, rising talent Ana Peláez Triviño, Nuria Iturrioz and Carmen Alonso.
