Adam Hadwin. Warren Little

The life of a PGA Tour pro can be great and very rewarding — emphasis on the reward part of that if you play well. But the downside is that with so many weeks traveling, you don’t get a lot of time on the homefront. However, that might actually be the only thing that keeps Adam Hadwin from making it to the next season.

Don’t get it twisted. We’re sure the Canadian loves being at home with his wife, toddler and dog. And we’re pretty sure Jessica loves having him around (even if he spends a lot of time talking golf) to help out — especially because he’s pretty handy around the house. But Adam’s DIY projects seem to be getting more intense — and dangerous — as the offseason continues.

One day you’re tinkering under the kitchen sink:

He’s backkkk pic.twitter.com/OFAfTLcfH4

And next thing you know it, you’re high up on a ladder doing ceiling repairs while wearing socks(!):

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but it might be time for golf to get going again before this man kills himself doing home repairs.

What’s next?! Putting on a new roof? Barefooted?

“Can’t believe I’m saying this, but it might be time for golf to get going again before this man kills himself doing home repairs. Pulled into the garage to the door wide open and Bob the builder with a sketchy 20 ft ladder set up,” Jessica tweeted. LOL the Bob the Builder jab.

But seriously, she has a point. It’s great Adam wants to do all this stuff — heck, my wife wishes I could do anything useful around the house–but you have to be careful. In any event, after a couple weeks off, the new fall portion of the PGA Tour schedule starts on Thursday. Fingers crossed Adam makes it to the first tee in one piece.

Adam Hadwin. Warren Little

Adam Hadwin would love to be playing in this week’s Tour Championship, but it was still a very successful season for the Canadian. The 35-year-old had five top 10s on the PGA Tour, including a pair of runner-ups, while racking up nearly $4 million in prize money — plus he went viral for getting tackled by a security guard. OK, so that last part wasn’t great, but still a nice campaign even if it was cut short by one event.

If you think he’s taking a break from golf — at least, mentally — after a long year on the course, though, think again. According to his wife, the brilliant Jessica, Adam can’t get the season out of his head. And she revealed the details in her typical hilarious fashion. First, there was this tweet on Monday:

If anyone wants to know what a pro golfer does first day of his “off season” it’s watch every shot of his @PGATOURLIVE round from last week pic.twitter.com/LsuikUo9Mo

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) August 21, 2023

And then this follow-up a couple days later:

If anyone wants to know what a pro golfer does on his second and third day off his off season, it’s rehash every physical, mental, and spiritual aspect of his golf game on the phone with his team ? https://t.co/1V9XeSH0ON

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) August 23, 2023

Not that we’re too surprised. After all, Jessica has revealed that Adam punishes himself for missing cuts by making himself do household chores. So it makes sense that he would want to immediately do a deep dive into what transpired this season to help him prepare for the next one. Also, all of that sounds like a better time than cleaning the gutters.

And besides, it’s not like the PGA Tour has a long off-season. The Fortinet Championship starts in just three weeks. Although, unlike in previous years it’s part of a new autumn session and not part of next season.

Anyway, Adam caught wind of his wife’s latest tweets directed at him and roped his team into it:

She’s now taking shots at you guys ??‍@blackburngolf @jasonglasslab @TheGolfingDoc https://t.co/iNqZHc7B1O

— adam hadwin (@ahadwingolf) August 23, 2023

But Jessica, as usual, had the perfect reply:

I would never! Better y’all than me ?

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) August 23, 2023

Let’s hope Adam gets to spend more time at home this autumn with the tour’s revamped schedule, because these two are chock full of content gold.

The USGA Prank. Adam Hadwin Twitter

As one of golf’s governing bodies — in particular, the one most known for difficult course set-ups and wearing blue blazers — the USGA has a somewhat stuffy reputation. But even the people running this week’s US Open at the super-exclusive and super-strict Los Angeles Country Club got in on the Adam Hadwin fun.

In case you haven’t been plugged into Golf Twitter over the past 24 hours, the Canadian went viral for getting tackled at the conclusion of the RBC Canadian Open. Hadwin had rushed the 18th green to try to celebrate friend and countryman Nick Taylor’s win by spraying him with champagne only to be laid out by a security guard. Have a look:

Security is TOIGHT at the Canadian Open ? pic.twitter.com/6cS38bQiYk

— Kayla Grey (@Kayla_Grey) June 11, 2023

Fortunately, Hadwin — and the now-famous bottle — survived in one piece and the PGA Tour winner boarded a cross-country charter flight that took players to this week’s major. And when he arrived at his locker at LACC, there was a funny gift waiting for him, courtesy of the USGA:

Ready for a great week @usopengolf. Thanks to the @USGA for keeping me safe! pic.twitter.com/qbUbOkvWvK

— adam hadwin (@ahadwingolf) June 12, 2023

That’s a nice, quick job by the USGA. Although we’re pretty sure Hadwin won’t wear the construction vest and hard hat — in part because someone at LACC would probably have him removed from the grounds.

When they’re not in their usual uniform—polo shirt, pants, logoed hat, sunglasses, etc.—just about any tour pro not named Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson can blend in anywhere, which is a good thing. Adam Hadwin is likely wishing the opposite was true after he was mistaken for a law-breaking fan on Sunday at the RBC Canadian Open.

Hadwin, who was born in Moose Jaw, was one of many Canadian tour pros out watching the epic playoff between Tommy Fleetwood and Canada’s own Nick Taylor. On the fourth hole of sudden death, the par-5 18th, Taylor finally ended it with a ridiculously long eagle conversion, sending the Canadian crowd into a frenzy at Oakdale Golf & Country Club.

Taylor’s victory was the first by a Canadian in the Canadian Open since 1954, so you’ll have to forgive our friends up North for going as batsh-t crazy as they did. Among the chaos was Hadwin, who ran out onto the green spraying champagne in Taylor’s direction in celebration. Apparently, security had no idea that Hadwin was a fellow tour pro, a fellow Canuck and a friend to Taylor, with one guard mistaking him for a law-breaking fan and FLATTENING him Terry Tate office linebacker style:

Security is TOIGHT at the Canadian Open ? pic.twitter.com/6cS38bQiYk

Usually it’s only Hadwin’s own wife, Jessica, who is clocking him from his blindside like that (on Twitter, that is).

All kidding aside, my goodness, what a scene. Hopefully, Hadwin is OK, so he (and we) can laugh it off. Because it’s one of the funnier situations we’ve ever witnessed. Only in golf could a legit PGA Tour pro look so unathletic in plain clothes that he gets mixed up for a fan who got under the ropes and started to cause a scene. What an absolutely ridiculous sport.

UPDATE: We have an alternate angle of Hadwin getting driven into the ground by a security guard, and it shows him hanging on to that champagne bottle for dear life:

Adam Hadwin getting tackled by security (they thought he was a fan).

pic.twitter.com/869HS8uG5l

Cripes, Hadwin is lucky he didn’t get hurt. That would have been poor timing with the U.S. Open at LACC on tap this week. Good news is, it appears all is well. Here’s what Hadwin tweeted long after the celebration began:

Words cannot describe the magnitude of what you just accomplished. So proud of you @ntaylorgolf59!

— adam hadwin (@ahadwingolf) June 12, 2023

And yes, Jessica did eventually weigh in, revealing that her husband pulled the most Canadian move of all time after getting run over:

Adam Hadwin. Warren Little

Being a PGA Tour pro is one of the few professions where weekends off aren’t a good thing. If you learned anything from Netlflix’s “Full Swing,” it’s that you don’t get paid if you don’t make THE CUT.

But as if that’s not motivation enough to play well, Adam Hadwin it seems has come up with another way to punish his own poor play: house repairs. We’ve seen the handy — at least, he seems pretty handy to me — Canadian go to work putting together IKEA furniture last year and cleaning carpets when he didn’t make it into the Masters earlier this year. After failing to make it to the weekend at last week’s Wells Fargo Championship, though, it looks like Hadwin really put himself through the ringer.

Of course, as always his wife, Jessica, was there to document her husband’s struggles, this time trying to teach himself some DIY repair through YouTube. Have a look:

How Willis punishes himself after a missed cut. Straight to house repairs via YouTube academy. ? pic.twitter.com/y01tjkm4Ri

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) May 7, 2023

Not sure where the “Willis” nickname comes from, but props to Adam. Here’s a PGA Tour winner on the ground trying to do, well, whatever the heck he’s trying to do there. Again, I’m not handy so I wouldn’t even attempt anything nearly that ambitious. And it’s not even like Adam played that poorly. He shot even par to miss the cut by one so this seems like a pretty harsh sentence!

When someone asked why a guy with nearly $20 million in career earnings is doing this stuff himself, Jessica had the perfect response:

Why pay some one when you can do it yourself first and fail and then pay someone

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) May 7, 2023

And it sounds like Adam had a busy Sunday involving birds while his colleagues battled it out at Quail Hollow:

Todays projects are all him. Now he’s headed for the roof to try and find where some birds are nesting ?‍?

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) May 7, 2023

The moral of the story for Adam? Play better so you don’t find yourself in awkward spots on the weekend. But don’t worry, Adam, your effort certainly isn’t going unnoticed:

pic.twitter.com/gBT2bLreck

The bright side of missing the Masters if you’re a PGA Tour pro is you get an extra week at home. You know, some good, quality time with the wife/kid/dog/couch. It could be a relaxing week amid a busy travel schedule. Then again, you also could be put to work in a different way.

Such is the case for Adam Hadwin. The PGA Tour winner didn’t quite crack the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and thus, didn’t receive a fourth invite to Augusta National this year. And on Day 1 of the 2023 Masters, his wife (and Golf Twitter star), Jessica, posted a hilarious photo of Hadwin cleaning carpets in their house.

Why would you want to be at the masters when you could be home shampooing rugs!

[Disclaimer: This is a joke. Obviously Adam would rather be at the Masters. He is not being forced against his will to clean. Yes we have the means to pay a company to do this, but we ain’t gonna] pic.twitter.com/WMaRK0V1mk

Well, at least it’s hilarious to us. Dude looks absolutely miserable. And we don’t blame him. (Also, props for that DIY attitude!)

This is similar to when Jessica shared another funny photo of Adam struggling to put together a wooden TV console from IKEA last year the day after finishing T-7 at the US Open. Adam did do a nice job on the console. Eventually. (Again, props.)

Anyway, this should serve as a little extra motivation to make it back to next year’s Masters. So hang in there, Adam. And, hopefully, you’re qualified for all the other majors this year, because we hear the garage could use some work.

By Matt Smith
Only six weeks after a piece of IKEA furniture threatened to throw a spanner into his marriage, PGA golfer Adam Hadwin is in trouble with wife Jessica yet again.

Following a best-ever finish in a major at the US Open at the Country Club in June, Adam was nearly defeated while attempting to assemble a TV unit at home, and — as they do for all of us when faced with those flat-pack wooden slabs, a bag of screws and that darned Allen key — tensions rose in the Hadwin household.

Thankfully, Jessica was on hand to comedically give us Twitter-based updates throughout the traumatic time, and the happy ending.

And we’re off! Do we get this done today? Will @ahadwingolf say it’s missing a piece at least 5 times? Will we still be married? Stay tuned! pic.twitter.com/QKAsDeUJ9t

However… It looks like Adam is back in the doghouse for this fashion faux pas:

Y’all pray for @ahadwingolf … today I came out of a dressing room to model my adorable outfit for an upcoming trip we are taking, and he said, AND I QUOTE “does that jacket feel a little tight?”

Oh Adam, that is Things Not To Say To Your Wife: 101.

I guess he can smooth things over with a little shopping trip, as Jessica is fond of a trip to the store:

By Alex Myers
After putting together the best major championship performance of his career, Adam Hadwin quickly found himself putting together … a piece of IKEA furniture. Talk about being brought back to Earth.

Hadwin’s wife, Jessica, shared a photo of Adam just getting started on a wooden TV console on Tuesday with a funny caption. “And we’re off! Do we get this done today? Will @ahadwingolf say it’s missing a piece at least 5 times? Will we still be married? Stay tuned!”

And we’re off! Do we get this done today? Will @ahadwingolf say it’s missing a piece at least 5 times? Will we still be married? Stay tuned! pic.twitter.com/QKAsDeUJ9t

— Jessica Hadwin (@jessicahadwin) June 21, 2022

Again, this was a guy who was LEADING the US Open just a few days ago! And there he is, just like any other dad, struggling with a box full of wooden slabs and probably some bad instructions. Man, there’s nothing worse.

Pleased to report it is all put together, no missing pieces. No swear words and no arguments. Might have played this one better than the us open last week! https://t.co/ZXXSypfR3R

— adam hadwin (@ahadwingolf) June 21, 2022

But this PGA Tour winner showed the type of grit and perseverance needed to finish in the top 10 of a US Open to get the job done. Jessica provided this update later in the day:

Looking good! And Adam, fresh off that T-7 at The Country Club, was darn proud of his accomplishment as well. As he should.

He he said himself: “Might have played this one better than the us open last week!”

The Country Club wasn’t playing that hard last week. And when asked why they didn’t just order more expensive furniture that could be delivered, he gave this fantastic response:

We could yes, but what better way to test the structural integrity of our marriage! https://t.co/ehE8mh82WG

— adam hadwin (@ahadwingolf) June 22, 2022

Hey, the couple that builds IKEA furniture together, stays together. In fact, you guys almost certainly have more structural integrity than that TV console.

Adam Hadwin. Warren Little

By Alex Myers
Day 1 at the US Open has come to an end, and there were plenty of things that left us scratching our heads. Here are eight surprises from the first round at The Country Club:

Adam Hadwin is your leader

Look, the guy’s a PGA Tour winner and he finished T-9 at the Players Championship earlier this year. But the Canadian’s record at the US Open couldn’t be much colder. In six previous starts, he has two missed cuts with a T-39 being his best finish. And that came 11 years ago at Congressional. And he wasn’t even in the field at Brookline until Paul Casey withdrew last week with his continued back ailment. Still, there he was on Thursday going out in a scorching four-under-par 31 and finishing at that number to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Not bad, eh? Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Callum Tarren is contending

How under-the-radar is this 31-year-old Englishman? He doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page. That didn’t stop him from shooting an opening 67, which was highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 eighth hole. Tarren has six pro runner-ups, but you’re probably not aware of them since they all came on the PGA Tour China. The 445th-ranked player in the world had his best ever finish — at least, in terms of Official World Golf Ranking points — with a T-5 at this year’s Puerto Rico Open. So he would be quite the surprise winner. Bye the way, here’s what he looks like:

Callum Tarren. David Cannon

Then again, this is a place probably most known for producing a surprise winner. And Francis Ouimet didn’t have a Wikipedia page when he won back in 1913. So you never know!

So is David Lingmerth

Lingmerth, an alternate, got his opportunity when Martin Kaymer withdrew earlier this week, and so far, he’s taking advantage of it. The winner of the 2015 Memorial, Lingmerth has fallen to No. 592 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But he certainly didn’t play like that during a bogey-free 67. Even better, it seems as if he parlayed this week into some snazzy new clothes:

Thanks @swanniesapparel for providing some ? new gear in time for the US Open. Let’s get after it !!?? pic.twitter.com/O5YGD8Dnpl

— David Lingmerth (@dlingmerth) June 16, 2022

Look good, feel good, am I right?

There were no LIV-PGA Tour fistfights

At least, none that we know of. This week marks the first time PGA Tour pros and PGA Tour defectors have mingled since the inaugural LIV Golf event and several players — most notably Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Justin Thomas — have been rather vocal defending their turf/tour. But for the most part, these guys all seem to be playing nice. For now.

Brooks Koepka didn’t dominate

This four-time major champ hasn’t been at his best for a while. Still, this is a guy who has lost to a total of four players over his past four US Opens. And yet he got beaten by more than half the field on Thursday.

Brooks Koepka. Patrick Smith

I know this will shock you, but Brooks didn’t stop to chat with the media after.

Phil Mickelson barely broke 80

Let’s just say Phil Mickelson didn’t have his happiest birthday. The six-time major champ struggled from start to finish shooting an eight-over-par 78 that included a four-putt from 16 feet on No. 6. Let’s also just say that 52-year-olds aren’t supposed to play well at US Opens. Still, this was a particularly rough performance for a man who has had a particularly rough go of late.

Phil Mickelson. Patrick Smith

And … let’s also just say that career Grand Slam ain’t happening this week.

Louis Oosthuizen didn’t do much better

Remember when this guy was seemingly in the hunt at every major last year? Well, that seems like a long time ago. Oosthuizen, who finished T-2, solo second and T-3 in the final three majors of 2021, withdrew at this year’s Masters before finishing T-60 at the PGA, and now he’ll need a miracle to make the cut after opening with 77.

Jon Rahm had a golf ball stolen

In plain sight. On the 18th hole. Fortunately, someone had already marked it in the rough before it disappeared. And Rahm thinks he knows who the culprits are.

“Somebody — I’m pretty sure I know who it was. I recognised the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face,” Rahm said laughing. “I am 100 per cent sure I saw the two kids that stole it.”

Despite the bizarre situation, Rahm responded by making birdie to shoot 69 and put himself in great shape to defend his title. No word on if he went to local police to help provide a sketch of the thieves.

By Shane Ryan
Adam Hadwin looked mad, but mad in that exhausted, beaten-down way where he knew that his anger was ultimately directed at something so powerful that any frustration he felt, or vented, was ultimately impotent. Adam Hadwin, born and bred on the prairies of Saskatchewan, was mad at the heat.

“I would not wish this on my worst enemy,” he said, hat pulled low as he hugged the shade near the scoring room on Saturday at the Wyndham Championship. He had just carded a third-round 66, good enough to surge into the top 15 with one round to go, which felt downright courageous under the circumstances. His brain, though … his brain wasn’t registering anything but the heat.

“It was the only thing I had on my mind the last three or four holes,” he said. “You just stay upright, get through the round, and figure it out after that.”

It’s not like he didn’t know it was coming. With temperatures in the 90s and the heat index over 100 for the third straight day—not mention the punishing humidity that rarely dips below 50 percent and that ratchets up into the 90-percent range when the heat subsides, creating a stagnant, muggy bog-like feeling that seemingly never goes away—Hadwin knew he had to prepare, and like many of his fellow golfers, he drank Pedialyte with water in an attempt to hydrate. How did that work out?

“It’s not enough,” he said, and with that he trudged off to find air conditioning.

He was not alone.

MORE: Russell Henley trying to go wire-to-wire in Wyndham

“You see this?” Denny McCarthy asked, pointing to the small space of light gray fabric at the bottom of his pants, near the foot. “This is the actual colour of my pants.”

He didn’t need to say the rest: Every other part of the pants was a darker gray, from belt to below the knee, soaked through with sweat.

“I sweat a lot to begin with,” he said, “so these, these are tough rounds for me. You gotta be really mentally tough. I switch between two or three gloves, I keep a thing of baby powder in the bag, I’m putting baby powder in the gloves, I’m icing my hands to cool them off every tee box, wiping with a towel, asking my caddie to give me a towel before every shot, and even the ball in my pocket gets soaked.”

Along with all these rituals, McCarthy estimates that he drinks 15-20 bottles of various fluids within the round itself, from water to Gatorade to Pedialyte, much of it mixed with Liquid I.V. And those are just the physical elements. McCarthy confirmed the suspicion that it’s far easier to become angry and frustrated during extreme weather, and staying calm after a bad shot or a tough break.

“If you lose it, your mental fortitude for a hole or two, this course can jump up and get you,” he said.

Russell Henley, the leader heading into Sunday, struggles like McCarthy with keeping his hands dry, but he doesn’t resort to baby powder.

“I just wipe my hands on a towel,” he said, “and if the towel’s dirty, I get mad at my caddie.”

Electrolytes are a common solution for almost everyone who commented on this story, with brands like Pedialyte, BioSteel, Liquid I.V., LivPur, and All Sports being name-checked specifically, along with various other mysterious concoctions kept in packets for readily mixing with water. As Kevin Kisner said, “You can’t just have water.” Nor is the hydrating solely on the course—over and over, players emphasized the need to hydrate far in advance, and immediately after losing water due to sweat.

Just as important? Don’t spend longer than necessary outside.

“You don’t warm up as long and definitely don’t practice after so you can rejuvenate for tomorrow,” Kisner said. “With a quick turnaround now for the morning”—tee times will be early on Sunday due to bad weather forecast in the afternoon—”there will be a lot of fluids tonight to get ready.”

And if you think the players have it bad, marching for around five hours in extreme heat, imagine being a caddie tasked with carrying that player’s bag. Mookie DeMoss, a former player at the University of Georgia, happens to be caddying in his first full PGA Tour event this weekend after Keith Mitchell’s usual looper tested positive for COVID1-9. Mitchell called up his old teammate and childhood friend as a last-minute replacement. On Saturday, on the range, Mitchell and DeMoss were laughing about the old Nick Saban story, where he ran a summer camp and had this advice for his players: “It’s hot outside. It doesn’t need to be said again.”

Yet as the hours passed, they couldn’t help talking about the heat. By the 18th tee, they had each chugged huge amounts of water and were shocked at how much they were sweating. When DeMoss tried to read his yardage book, he found that he had sweat through his back pocket, and the edges were soaked and in danger of falling apart. By the end of the day, DeMoss was putting Greensboro up there with a PGA Latinoamerica Tour stop in Cancun and the 2015 NCAA championships in Florida as the hottest places he’d ever played.

Cole Pensanti caddies for Kiradech Aphibarnrat and has been on the bag for LPGA stars like Lizette Salas and Danielle Kang.

“I’ve been in worse,” he said, showing a stoic resistance to the heat. “It’s pretty bad today, and there’s no breeze, which makes it worse. Overall, I give it an 8.8 out of 10 for the worst I’ve ever been in.”

What was the worst? According to him, Malaysia. According to Kisner, Erick Van Rooyen, and several others, the answer is also Malaysia. Brian Vranesh, who caddies for Si Woo Kim, gave Tokyo a nod, while Tyler McCumber name-checked the Puntacana Resort in the Dominican Republic. In the continental U.S., answers ranged from Bradenton, Fla., to Omaha, Neb., to the Barbasol in Alabama.

Aphibarnrat, a native of Thailand, has struggled through hot weather for his entire life, and his key battle is with the mental side of the heat.

“Everyone wants to stay as calm as possible,” he said. “When you make a little mistake, they tend to just pop up in your head because the temperature really heated up and you didn’t concentrate as much as you can do. I did it today. I missed a putt, and I wanted to be done, I wanted to walk off the golf course.”

Amazingly, Aphibarnrat named Greensboro, this week, as the hottest place he’s ever played. Perhaps it was the recency bias—he had just emerged from the cauldron—but he insisted on it, and added that it wouldn’t surprise him if a player or caddie passed out.

Van Rooyen, coming off a win at last week’s Barracuda Championship, and no stranger to intense heat as a South African, has a simple formula for coping: “Get sweaty. Eat good. Drink good.”

But it was Van Rooyen’s perspective on the mental aspect of the heat that was the most profound, at least in its brutal wisdom. When asked if it made things more intense, more frustrating, and led to more bouts of anger—in short, is it easier to get pi#### off?—he only shrugged.

“No,” he said, “it’s pretty easy to get pi#### off anyway. That’s the honest truth. Golf is already at the max.”
