Cameron Smith was frustrated after finishing 35th last week in Greenbrier, his worst result of the LIV Golf League season. He didn’t feel good about his putter, or about the distance control with his wedges, normally two of his strengths. “A weird week,” he called it.

There was nothing weird about his play in Friday’s first round at LIV Golf Bedminster. Dialled in on a tough, challenging course, the Ripper captain opened with a five-under 66 to grab a one-stroke lead over Charles Howell III at Trump National Bedminster.

“A little bit different to last week, which was the goal — especially today,” said Smith, seeking his second individual win of the season after last month’s victory in London.

The Australian star wasn’t the only one having a bounce-back moment.

Charles Howell III of Crushers shot a 67 on day one of LIV Golf Bedminster. Team leaders 4 Aces suffered thier worst-ever team result, a last-place finish in Greenbrier. But with Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed shooting twin three-under 68s on Friday to share third place on the individual leaderboard, the Aces are tied for second with Stinger, one shot behind the Rippers.

“Definitely shocked, of course,” Reed said about last week. “Our team is way better than finishing last in a golf tournament. But at the same time, you just kind of go to one of those golf courses that doesn’t really fit your eye. If it happens not to fit a couple other guys on the team’s eye, either, you can just kind of get in one of those funks.”

With just three tournaments left in the regular season, a poor result can be costly in both the individual and team races. With Torque winning in Greenbrier, the 4 Aces’ lead was reduced to seven points.

Dustin Johnson. LIV Golf

But after a hot start by the Aces on Friday, and Torque back in the pack in 10th place, it’s an opportunity for the Aces to rebuild their lead and create some separation from the closest chasers. They won at Bedminster last year during a stretch of four consecutive victories.

“Obviously coming in here, it’s a really good golf course, tough golf course. I think our team plays better on courses like this,” said 4 Aces captain Dustin Johnson. “We want to have a good week, and obviously we need to extend our lead a little bit.”

Smith is in his own race for the season-long Individual Champion title. He entered this week in second place, 15 points behind three-time tournament winner Talor Gooch, who is tied for 15th after the first round after shooting an even-par 71.

Trying to chase down Gooch, who has won three times this season, was one of the reasons Smith put in extra work on the range and practice greens this week.

“That was part of the reason for the work … to be the best at the end of the season. That’s what you want to be,” Smith said. “Sure, you want to win tournaments, but I think proving it over 13 tournaments is much better than one.”

TEAM COUNTING SCORES

Here are the standings and counting scores for Friday’s opening round of the team competition at LIV Golf Bedminster. The three best scores from each team count in every round for their total team score. The team with the lowest cumulative score after three rounds wins the team title.

4 Aces and Torque are fighting it out for top spot in LIV Golf League 2023. LIV Golf

After winning their LIV Golf League-leading fourth team trophy of the season last Sunday in record-scoring fashion, Torque had a bit of fun — and maybe an undercurrent of frustration — in discussing the season-long standings.

Torque are still in second place. Still behind 4 Aces, who have produced half the success (two wins) this season.

“It’s a running joke on this team how the Aces keep going in front even though we keep winning,” said Sebastian Munoz, who at 30 is Torque’s elder spokesman. “Mito says the score is biased.”

That would be teammate Mito Pereira, who added, “I can’t believe we’re still second. Something is wrong here.”

Actually, it’s not so much about right or wrong but consistency.

With points weighted heavily toward higher tournament finishes, the defending champions, 4 Aces, have been atop the standings since grabbing the lead after the second tournament of the season. Dustin Johnson’s team didn’t win either of the first two events, but with consecutive runner-up results, they acquired enough points to overtake the first two team winners (Crushers in Mayakoba, Fireballs in Tucson).

Even after Torque won for the first time in Orlando in the third event, the Aces were still No. 1, thanks to a third-place finish. Finally, the Aces claimed the team trophy in Adelaide — their fourth consecutive podium result.

Through the first six events of 2023, the Aces led with 120 points while Torque were in sixth place at 65 points. In the five subsequent tournaments, the Aces claimed 48 points (with one win) while Torque added 96 points (thanks to their three wins, worth 32 points each).

That’s left the Aces in first going into this week’s LIV Golf Bedminster with 168 points, with Torque in second at 161 points.

Joaquin Niemann. Asian Tour

“We’re still second,” Captain Joaquin Niemann sighed.

“I guess they’re really solid and getting points every week,” added Pereira, almost grudgingly.

Stinger’s Charl Schwartzel, whose team sits third in the standings, said the points structure may need to be evaluated. “There needs to be more reward for winning,” he said. “If you’re winning four times, I think you should be leading.”

Although the win differential favours Torque, there are a couple of other data points that favour the 4 Aces and helps explain why they remain No. 1:

Podium results: 4 Aces have 6, Torque have 5

Average finish position: 4 Aces are at 4.2, Torque are at 4.3

Essentially, while Torque have more top-eight points finishes this season (nine to eight), the 4 Aces have more quality finishes.

But those are just numbers. What’s the perception among their LIV Golf competitors who are chasing the two teams? Who’s the team to beat right now — 4 Aces or Torque?

“It’s a tough choice between them, but they both played really, really well and really solid this year,” said Majesticks co-captain Henrik Stenson. “It will be interesting to see if any of the other teams can bring them down in Miami.”

“Obviously you’re trying to bait me a little with this question,” smiled HyFlyers’s Cameron Tringale.

Cameron Tringale. LIV Golf

Said Stinger captain Louis Oosthuizen: “The 4 Aces have a lot more seconds and thirds, but right now, Torque are by far the team that, at the moment, look like they’re going to finish at the top with the way they’re playing.”

Fireballs captain Sergio Garcia added: “I wouldn’t go just with those two. Obviously yeah, those are the usual suspects that you may say, but I think Crushers, obviously Bryson [DeChambeau] is playing very well, and Anirban [Lahiri] is very solid. Paul [Casey], if he’s fit, he’s a great player. Obviously Charl [Charles Howell III] is a really solid player, too.

“I think there’s several teams that have improved a lot this year. RangeGoats are much better than they were last year. You have to be aware of several of them, but at the end of the day, I think, like I said, I have a lot of belief and confidence in my team, and I think that if we’re firing on all cylinders, we can beat anyone.”

Certainly, DeChambeau’s 61-58 weekend at Greenbrier to win the individual title has the rest of the league on notice. A hot hand posting super-low scores alleviates some of the pressure for his teammates. The RangeGoats, for instance, have relied heavily on Talor Gooch’s league-leading three individual wins this season, as well as Harold Varner III’s win.

Lahiri said his Crushers captain is playing with the momentum of “a freight train”.

“We’re just going to ideally just ride his coattails,” Lahiri said. “But that’s what team golf is about. You need one guy to go super-hot or two guys to play really well, and then you want the other two guys to have those performances that pick the team up.”

But at the top of the standings, team depth matters the most.

The 4 Aces have just one individual win in 2023 (captain Dustin Johnson in Tulsa) but have combined for 16 top-10 points finishes. Every player has contributed at least three top 10s: DJ 5, Patrick Reed 4, Peter Uihlein 4, Pat Perez 3. Of the team’s 40 individual starts this season, 27 have resulted in points. And they’re the only team with all four players inside the top half of the individual season standings.

Torque are nearly as impressive. No individual wins this season, but 13 top 10s: Pereira 5, Munoz 4, Niemann 2, David Puig 2. Of their 40 cumulative starts, 25 have produced points.

The intriguing development is the rise of Puig, who at 21 years old is LIV Golf’s youngest player. Both of his top 10s have come in his last three starts, including his LIV-career best fourth at Greenbrier. He has emerged as one of the most valuable No. 4 players in any line-up.

“Probably the key thing for that team is how much David has improved, and that shows a lot,” Garcia said. “Obviously he’s gotten a lot more comfortable out here. At the beginning was probably a little bit nervy and stuff, but now you can see that he’s playing much better. He’s playing with a lot of confidence, and that’s helping the team a lot.”

With three tournaments left in the regular season, 4 Aces and Torque are virtually assured of first-round byes at the Team Championship. They can still jockey for position, which is important since the higher-seeded teams get to “draft” their opponent in the semi-final match-play round.

For now, the emphasis will be on acquiring more trophies.

The Aces, coming off their worst-ever result as a team — last place in Greenbrier — hope that Bedminster will offer better vibes. They won the team title here last year during a stretch of four consecutive victories.

Welcome back to Bedminster ?#LIVGolf pic.twitter.com/hQqndUz6Ol

Meanwhile, Munoz said at the start of the season that he expected Torque to win three times. They’ve already surpassed that total. He’s now having to readjust his projections.

“We’re trending. We’re playing good,” Munoz said. “Our rookie, David, is playing great. He’s fighting for tournaments. I feel like we could make a couple more.”

If so, Torque may finally overtake the Aces and rise to No. 1 in the standings. The Spanish-speaking quartet is tired of the joke. Time now for serious business.

Talor Gooch in action in Adelaide. LIV Golf

The 2023 LIV Golf League season has reached the halfway point. Seven tournaments in the books, seven more to go. Here’s a look at the highly unscientific, totally subjective first-half superlatives. Feel free to disagree.

BEST PLAYER

Talor Gooch. LIV Golf

Talor Gooch (RangeGoats)
Easy choice here. Only player with two individual wins this season. First LIV golfer to post back-to-back wins. First player to shoot 10-under par for a single round — and he did it on consecutive days. Led by 10 strokes through 36 holes in Adelaide. Other players have been more consistent, but no one’s been more spectacular than the current individual points leader.

BEST TEAM

LIV Golf’s 4 Aces — Talor Gooch, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez. LIV Golf

4 Aces
Not such an easy choice here. Yes, the 4Aces are the points leaders at the halfway mark, and they have more podium finishes (5) than any other team, including a win in Adelaide. But Torque have two wins and are one of just two teams earning points in each of the first seven tournaments (RangeGoats being the other one). The nod goes to 4 Aces and their consistency, but it’s evident that other teams have raised their game and won’t allow a 2022-type domination.

Scott Vincent (Iron Heads)
Having earned playing privileges due to his success in the International Series last year, the Zimbabwean has emerged as one of the League’s consistent point producers, finishing in the top 24 in six of the first seven events. The highlight came in Singapore when he shot a second-round 62 on his way to a LIV-career best solo fourth. You could argue newcomer Mito Pereira, who has four top-six finishes and is eighth in points. But anyone who saw Mito play in the 2022 PGA Championship shouldn’t be surprised. Vincent finished 46th in points last season and is now 24th against deeper competition.

Torque & RangeGoats (tie)
Joaquin Niemann’s Torque and Bubba Watson’s RangeGoats are the two obvious candidates here. Both teams made significant changes in their line-ups from last season (and in the RangeGoats’ case, they also rebranded the team name, while Torque changed its pronunciation to two syllables). Torque’s won twice and have six more points, the RangeGoats have one team win, but three individual winners in Talor Gooch (twice) and Harold Varner III.

LIV Golf

Danny Lee (Iron Heads)
Of the six new players added to the LIV Golf League roster this season, Lee hasn’t been as consistent as Mito Pereira, Sebastian Munoz, Dean Burmester and even Brendan Steele, who each have more points. But the South Korean-born Lee, who represents New Zealand, is the only one with a victory, having won a four-man playoff in Tucson with a dramatic birdie putt from off the green. That gave his Iron Heads a chance to celebrate their first trophy of any kind.

BEST SHOTS

LIV Golf

TEE SHOT – Chase Koepka’s ace, 12th hole, Adelaide, Round 3
It’s the moment that not only defines the first half of the season but is arguably the most unforgettable shot to date in LIV Golf’s young history. Koepka’s shot at the Watering Hole set off a celebration rarely seen at any golf tournament, and it typified the successful tournament in Australia that has set the standard for Golf But Louder.

APPROACH – Phil Mickelson’s 3rd shot, 7th hole, Singapore, Round 2
Mickelson missed the fairway with his tee shot at the par-5 seventh. Forced to lay up, the HyFlyers captain faced a lengthy third shot … which he holed for eagle. The shot gave Mickelson the solo lead, and though he slipped out of the top 10 by the end of the tournament, it was another reminder that Lefty has plenty of magic left in his bag.

BUNKER – Harold Varner III’s hole-out, 11th hole, DC, Round 3
Tied with Branden Grace at the top of the leaderboard with eight holes left, Varner faced a delicate shot from the greenside bunker at the 11th. He popped the ball up to catch the green just beyond the fringe with just enough spin to head right toward the pin. The birdie was the key moment in Varner’s win in DC.

PUTT – Danny Lee’s playoff putt, 18th hole, Tucson
In just his second LIV Golf start, Lee ended the four-man playoff with a spectacular putt on the third playoff hole from off the green, a ball that bounced through the fringe and clanged the flagstick before dropping into the cup. Lee thrust both his arms in the air to celebrate his first win of any kind. Arlo White’s call on the broadcast was both rhythmic and sublime: “Danny Lee. Goodness me!”

BEST PERFORMANCES

4 Aces’ Dustin Johnson and Pat Perez. LIV Golf

INDIVIDUAL – Talor Gooch in Adelaide
Gooch’s domination in the first two rounds gave him a 10-shot lead — hard to fathom after just 36 holes. He came back to the pack in the final round, with his advantage whittled to two strokes at one point. But he made quality shots when needed to win the first of his back-to-back titles.

TEAM – 4 Aces in Adelaide
As dominant as Gooch’s performance was on the individual leaderboard, you could argue that the 4 Aces’ effort in Australia was even more so. All four Aces finished inside the top 10 that week — Patrick Reed and Pat Perez among four players tied for third, Peter Uihlein among three players tied for seventh, and Dustin Johnson in solo 10th. That all-four-inside-top-10 had never happened in any previous LIV Golf tournament. And yet, the Aces still won by only one stroke over the RangeGoats, a testament to how well Gooch played that week.

BEST ROUNDS

Harold Varner III. LIV Golf

INDIVIDUAL – Harold Varner III’s nine-under 61, Tulsa, Round 3
It’s not the lowest round relative to par this season — Gooch’s twin 10-under 62s in Adelaide remain the standard there. But through 14 holes that Sunday at Cedar Ridge, Varner was on pace to shoot not only 59, but lower. He eagled two of his first four holes, was five-under at that point and 10-under after finishing his first 14 holes. He ended the round with three pars and a bogey to tie for lowest score in LIV history.

TEAM – Crushers’ 20-under, Singapore, Round 3
From a counting score standpoint, it’s the second best score this season, with the RangeGoats counting for 23-under in the second round at Adelaide. But several teams went super-low that day. In Singapore, the Crushers were seven strokes better than the next team counting score, thanks to twin 63s by Charles Howell III and Paul Casey, and a 67 by Anirban Lahiri. It wasn’t enough to grab the team trophy, as the Crushers started the day tied for ninth on the leaderboard, but the final-day rally did put Bryson DeChambeau’s squad on the podium with a third-place finish.

Patrick Reed has one thing on his mind this week in Jeddah — helping complete a 1-2 for his 4 Aces team in the LIV Golf Individual Championship.

The American looked on as his team captain Dustin Johnson secured the inaugural crown at Bangkok last week, and now he is eager to join him on the second step of the podium, and set up his team in the best possible way ahead of the season-ending Team Championship in Miami at the end of the month, where the 4 Aces are top seeds.

Reed is three points behind second-placed Branden Grace in the season-long individual points race, but — with the South African out injured — he could overhaul him with a good showing in the final individual event in Saudi Arabia.

“It’s always in the back of your mind,” Reed said on the sidelines of the LIV Golf Jeddah pro am on Thursday. “Anytime you play in any tournament, you’re always thinking about what results will do to certain things. Really the only thing this week is focus on each day and try to play good golf. If I go and I play well, that takes care of everything. It takes care of the team. It takes care of the individual.

“That’s just something that I’ve always preached to our team, when we’re out there, we’re not sitting there worrying about positioning, this, that and all that. You go out and play the best golf you can, and if you go out and play the way you’re supposed to, everything else will take care of itself.

“The guys on the team are really out there grinding and playing hard, not just for themselves but also for the team. I think that’s what’s so unique about the format. You used to always be going out playing for yourself. Now you’re playing for something bigger. You’re playing for three other guys (Johnson, Pat Perez and Talor Gooch). You’re playing for the other caddies. It just gives you a little bit more motivation to go out there and play well.

“Look at what DJ has done. As a captain, you’re supposed to lead your guys, and that doesn’t just come off the golf course. Also you have to lead the guys on the golf course. To sit here and already lock everything up before the last event, it just shows that he’s not only doing his job off the golf course, but he’s doing his job on the golf course. He’s leading by example playing well, and we’re all trying to do the exact same and kind of follow, and it would be awesome for me to go out and play well this week and have the Aces go 1-2.”

The 4 Aces were once again at the top of LIV Golf — but this time it wasn’t thanks to the heroics of Patrick Reed or captain Dustin Johnson, rather it was the sparkling form of Talor Gooch that propelled the all-American team to the top of the team leaderboard and himself to the summit of the individual standings.

MORE: Watch the LIV Golf action LIVE here

The 30-year-old shot a five-under 65 on Day 2 near Boston where most players enjoyed the new rule allowing them to wear shorts. While Gooch sits on his own on 12-under, new recruit Joaquin Niemann in one strike back for Torque at The International.

Gooch’s captain Johnson is third as he looks to continue his brilliant form in LIV Golf, where he has finished in the top 10 in every competition so far.

“I’ve been playing solid I feel like every week,” said Johnson. “Each round I’ve felt like I’m doing the right things. Eventually it’s all going to come together. The game is definitely in good form, and I like the direction it’s heading in.”

Sihwan Kim’s form went from night to day as he went 24 shots better on Saturday than Friday, with a lowest round of 63 but still sits dead last after that opening 87.

Despite the low scores, Gooch had a word of caution. “There’s some more meat on the bone out there,” he said. “You don’t take good rounds for granted but you also aren’t satisfied. You know you can go get some more juice out of the squeeze, so hopefully we can do that tomorrow.”

Speaking of the newcomers, India’s Anirban Lahiri sits fourth on nine-under while World No. 2 Cameron Smith is five shots back of the lead in T8.

Phil Mickelson promised on Friday after his 73 was his 13th consecutive round without breaking 70 that results would improve soon, and they did just that on Saturday as the six-time major winner shot a 69 for the first time since the opening round of the LIV Golf Series back at the start of June. He will hope to improve on his 41st position in the 48-man field.

LIV Golf’s 4 Aces — Talor Gooch, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed and Pat Perez. LIV Golf

By Matt Smith
Patrick Reed has plenty to smile about lately as he and his LIV Golf 4 Aces teammates have established themselves as the ones to beat after three events of the inaugural Invitational Series.

The American joined up with compatriots Dustin Johnson, Talor Gooch and Pat Perez following the opening competition at Centurion Club just outside London — and it looks like they have found a winning combination.

In the two events since LIV Golf headed stateside from England, 4 Aces have dominated the team proceedings. In Portland, the all-American team won by seven strokes. At Bedminster, it was eight.

With major winners DJ and Reed finishing in the top five at both events for a combined 34-under for six rounds, it is clear to see what is working for 4 Aces. But there is more to it than just two of your four players delivering the scores that matter.

Reed is competing at the Asian Tour International Series in Singapore and South Korea before the LIV Golf festival arrives in Boston on September 2, and he says he is not surprised at 4 Aces’ success as they take aim at three victories on the trot.

“You have a player the calibre of DJ and myself as a 1-2 punch,” he told LIVGolf.com. “You’ve got a guy like Talor Gooch, who’s playing some solid golf and is an amazing player. And you’ve got Pat. Pat’s streaky. He can get hot pretty quick. The biggest thing is even when Pat’s not having a good day, he has the attitude to pick anyone up, no matter how the day is.

“We have the right kind of morale around these guys. Really, right now, with how we feel and how our game is, our mindset is to go out and win, and win often. Let it ride. I just feel like with this group, nothing’s going to keep is down.”

Of the 14 counting rounds in Portland and Bedminster, Johnson has contributed six (the maximum number in that timeframe), Reed has contributed four, and Gooch and Perez have contributed two apiece.

More telling, 13 of those rounds were under par — the other was even — while other teams have been crippled by multiple players having high scores. Cumulatively, the foursome’s 14 counting scores add up to 48-under.

4 Aces counting scores at Portland (Par 72) and Bedminster (Par 71)
Dustin Johnson
Portland 68, 68, 71
Bedminster 67, 69, 68
Patrick Reed
Portland 68, 67
Bedminster 64, 69
Talor Gooch
Bedminster 64
Pat Perez
Bedminster 71

Reed also revealed that it was close friend Johnson who convinced him to join LIV Golf.

“I was on the fence whether I was going to play or not,” said Reed, who is one of 22 LIV Golf members playing in this week’s International Series Singapore on the Asian Tour, “and DJ was like, ‘Hey, man, you have to.’ The relationship that DJ, Paulina, myself and Justine have … well, when he said, ‘Hey, it’s unbelievable out here’ when he was in London, I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re coming.’”

While Johnson and Reed missed on in the individual competition to debutant Henrik Stenson at Bedminster, they were both checking the leaderboard and the 4 Aces’ battle with Stenson’s Majesticks team.

For Johnson, that’s part of the allure of LIV Golf.

“Obviously, I know how I’m doing, but I’m always checking to see how the guys are playing,” said Johnson, who captained Oliver Bekker, Shaun Norris and Kevin Yuan to a fifth-place finish in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational London. “I really enjoy it. … There’s a lot more camaraderie with the guys. We’re all playing at the same time, so we’re all warming up together, we’re eating together. You just spend a lot more time with the guys, and I think it’s a lot of fun.”

Asked if he could see 4 Aces GC running the table the rest of the season, Reed said he could. “Because of how the guys are playing and how we’re supposed to play, we definitely have a chance,” he said. “We just don’t want to break up this team,” he said. “We want this team to stay together and have the 4 Aces keep it going.”

Henrik Stenson topped the leaderboard and the earnings list at Bedminster, New Jersey, for LIV Golf’s third event.

The Swede’s 11-under score over three days meant he took home the trophy and earned $4 million individually — with another $375,000 coming thanks to his quarter share of the team prize money.

His Majesticks team finished second behind Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces, eight strokes back. DJ, Patrick Reed, Talor Gooch and Pat Perez finished on a collective 25-under and added $750,000 each to their earnings.
