Even in this technology-smothered world, every now and then someone comes up with a bit of computer-based magic that makes you go: “Niiiiice!”

The tech wizards at the PGA Tour took ball-tracking to the next level at The Players Championship by combining a video showing the path of every tee shot on TPC Sawgrass’ (in?)famous 17th hole from the first round. Every. Single. Shot. And it is a thing of mesmerising beauty.

Take a look. It even includes the stinkers and sinkers on the ‘island’ par-3 hole:

A house with an incredible backyard replica of arguably the most famous par 3 in all of golf has hit the market. If you buy it, though, you’re probably going to need to purchase a lot of golf balls as well.

Have a look at 24717 W Caine Road in the Chicago suburb of Ingleside, Illinois. Or, rather, feast your eyes on its rendition of TPC Sawgrass’ 17th hole. And if you look closely, you can even see the traditional back-right Sunday pin at the Players Championship!

Absolutely spectacular. OK, so it doesn’t look like it plays quite as long as the real thing, but it’s still awesome.

There are five tee boxes and the owner has spent more than $100,000 on landscaping alone. So that $560,000 price tag doesn’t seem that bad — especially because you get six bedrooms in addition to the five tee boxes.

Watch Rory McIlroy try to hit TPC Sawgrass’ island green with every club in his bag

The challenge/horror of trying to hit TPC Sawgrass’ famed island green at the Players should intensify with the event moving back to March. What usually plays as a pitching wedge or less for the best golfers in the world will likely demand more club choices in windier and chillier (OK, so it’s still Florida and not the polar vortex most of the country recently had to deal with) conditions. And Rory McIlroy recently got a head start on his preparation.

In a cool video posted on the tournament’s Twitter feed, the four-time major champ went through his entire bag while taking cracks at the notorious par 3. McIlroy made an attempt with 13 different clubs (Everything except his putter) and wound up hitting the green four times on a hole he estimates was playing about 150 yards. McIlroy’s most impressive shot? A baby cut with his 3-wood that managed to stay on the putting surface. Check it out:

As you can see, McIlroy went four for 13, including that snazzy 3-wood. He also hit the green with his pitching wedge, 9-iron and 7-iron.

The Players is scheduled for March 14-17. And after seeing this video, we wouldn’t mind some extra strong gusts from the gods in Ponte Vedra Beach that week.

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale just took the competition for best backyard golf hole to a new level

It’s not uncommon for wealthy sports stars to be obsessed with golf. And it’s not uncommon for wealthy sports stars who are obsessed with golf to build practice areas at their homes to work on their games. That’s what being wealthy allows one to do (or so I hear).

What is uncommon, however, is for wealthy sports stars who are obsessed with golf to build a practice area that is a replica of a signature golf hole. And that the replica they build might rival the actual golf hole their copying.

This is all a long way of saying Gareth Bale, we salute you. The Welsh football star who plays for Real Madrid has built a version of the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass that had us at first wondering if he had bought up the Stadium Course from the PGA Tour. Nope, this is at Bale’s “backyard” at his home in Wales.

Check out the detailed railroad tracks around the green, and the tiny bunker front right, just like Pete Dye designed.

OK, so Dye’s original doesn’t have a fountain to help keep stagnant water aerated. But think about it … Bale has a fountain to keep stagnant water aerated. Talk about a unique sign of Bale’s golf obsession.

Of course, look at the way the guy spends his down time during football practice.

Bale warned us all that this was coming. In 2015, he told reporters that he had plans to build tributes to three of the world’s most famous golf holes. He didn’t say how much money he was going to spend, but we’re guessing it will make our eyes itch when it becomes public.

After Sawgrass’ 17th, Bale said he was going to have the par-3 eighth hole at Royal Troon (the Postage Stamp) followed by the par-4 11th hole at Augusta National.

Yes, a par 4 … in his backyard. The folks at Augusta National might be so impressed they’re let him do it.
