Forty-seven of the top 50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are in the field as the PGA Tour holds the 52nd edition of the Players Championship. A year ago, it was Rory McIlroy picking up his second Players title with a Monday playoff win over J.J. Spaun. He, along with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (winner in 2023 and 2024), are both trying to become the first golfers to win the Players title three times at TPC Sawgrass, and join Jack Nicklaus as the only three-time winner of the event.
All told, seven past Players champions are competing this week: McIlroy, Scheffler, Adam Scott, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Si Woo Kim and Justin Thomas. Scott will be playing in the event for the 25th time, the most of anyone competing.
Fourteen players in the field are making their tournament debut, highlighted by tour winners Michael Brennan, Steven Fisk and William Mouw. The others are: Zach Bauchou, Pierceson Coody, Zecheng Dou, A.J. Ewart, Takumi Kanaya, Johnny Keefer, Marco Penge, Kristoffer Reitan, Jordan Smith, Michael Thorbjornsen and Sudarshan Yellamaraju. The last man in the field was Seamus Power (No. 78 in the FedExCup standings through the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches) and the first alternate is David Ford.
The field has 123 players in it, with Brooks Koepka competing for the first time since 2022. The former LIV Golf was granted access to the event as part of the terms of return to PGA Tour competition. His addition allowed for two more players to compete from the standard field of 120.
Tee times for the first and second rounds at TPC Sawgrass were released on Monday.
