Can you provide an overview of Club Lab Golf and its core philosophy? What sets it apart from traditional golf experiences? 

Club Lab Golf is the first-of-its-kind indoor facility in the Middle East that redefines the golfing experience. Our core philosophy revolves around providing year-round practice, personalised coaching, and custom club fitting all under one roof. Led by PGA professionals, our cutting-edge training module utilises the Swing Catalyst software for one-on-one coaching. Our in-house lab, tailors golf clubs based on individual playing styles, goals, and preferences. This comprehensive approach, combining fitting, building, coaching and retail, aims to elevate golf culture in the UAE and the region, making us stand out within the industry. 

What was your drive/inspiration for launching Club Lab Golf?

It was fuelled by a profound passion for golf and a keen awareness of a gap in the market. My background as a PGA professional, master fitter, and club builder provided me with the expertise needed to recognise the absence of expert fittings and assessments in Dubai. Witnessing the transformative impact of data-driven club fitting on players over a decade, I saw the immense potential to elevate the golfing scene in the UAE. This passion, combined with a partnership with Rohan, ultimately led to the establishment of Club Lab Golf, driven by our commitment to offering elite coaching and an unparalleled club-fitting experience to golfers in the region.

What is your vision for Club Lab Golf?

Our core target market encompasses UAE golf players and enthusiasts of all skill levels, from amateurs to seasoned professionals. This inclusive approach has attracted a diverse clientele, with women, children, and even international customers from Saudi Arabia and India. Notably, we’ve witnessed a growing influx of junior golfers aged 12 to 17, with many performing well in local tournaments, reflecting our increasing appeal to young players.

How has Golf evolved as a sport in the region?

Golf in the UAE has evolved into a popular and dynamic sport, with significant growth in golf tourism, particularly accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you see the sport evolving further in the region?

Dubai’s investments have not only attracted golf enthusiasts but also families, enriching the sport’s appeal and contributing to its continued growth and popularity in the region. When did you notice a change in perspective for the sport?

The change in perspective on golf in Dubai became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, as it was among the first sports to open up to the public, with tee time during the day in high demand. Additionally, venues like Top Golf have played a crucial role in changing the perception of golf, offering a fun and exploratory experience that has made the sport more popular. The increasing attraction of junior players further underscores this shift in perspective.

“I really enjoyed the OG Golf Day last year,” Shanklin said. “I thought it was fantastic. Really well organised and everyone knew where to go, where they were teeing off and where the buggies were. “The format and scoring was all taken care of, and those are the best days. No one was asking questions and everyone knew what they were doing.

“Golf in the Middle East is completely different to what I am used to in the UK as, obviously, it is warmer, the greens are a lot faster. The greens are tough but good. You want to play on these greens as that is what the pros play on — like ‘glass’. They were so fast! The fairways are beautiful, not muddy like in the UK. It was like hitting off a green they were that well looked after. It was one of the best golf days I have ever been on.”

Last month, Adidas released a golf-version of the popular running shoe, the Ultraboost, transforming a fourth shoe model originally designed for off-course activities into a golf shoe. The Ultraboost is the youngest and sportiest of the foursome, being introduced in 2015 compared to the others dating back to the 1950s and 60s.

Hot on the heels of Othman Almulla sporting the brand new Adidas ZG23s at the PIF Saudi International in February, Adidas is releasing a limited-edition capsule called the “Icons Pack” featuring greyed-out versions of the Samba, Superstar and Stan Smith golf shoes. The Icons will be available May 12 at Adidas.ae.

SAMBA

The oldest of the Icons trio, the Samba dates back to 1949 as one of the German brand’s first shoe models. It was produced with football players in mind, the outsole’s gumsole laden suction design aimed to help athletes train on hard, slick surfaces. In its golf version, originally released in 2022, suction cups were replaced with three lugs to provide additional traction to the spikeless outsole.

The waterproof microfibre upper features a soft grey colourway with a hit of brown at the heel and a subtle multicolour addition to the lugs. It’s a low profile shoe designed for comfort, to be easily worn off the course and for versatility, with the simple gray palette able to match with almost anything.

SUPERSTAR

Originally released as a low-top basketball shoe in 1969, the Superstar shoe was a sport and style staple for decades, being worn by the Milwaukee Bucks’ Kareem Adbul-Jabbar during the 1970-1971 season and frequently Run-DMC after the group’s hit song “My Adidas” was released in 1986.

The rubber shell-like toe capped shoe was introduced into the golf line in 2020 with Adidas’ recognisable 3-Stripe design across the midfoot and zigzag outsole design surrounding six strategically placed lugs.

“The Superstar is a timeless piece of footwear that’s recognised and worn by people all over the world,” Adidas Golf global footwear direction Masun Denison said when it was released in 2020. “It’s always stood for those that are eager to push boundaries as well as stand out from the crowd, and we wanted to bring that style and mentality to the course.”

Making a return after a short hiatus, the Icons Pack version of the Superstar Golf Shoe is primarily grey with hits of dark brown at the heel and stripe design. The outsole features a marbled design combining grey, a silvery green, burgundy and shades of orange.

STAN SMITH

Third in the Icons trio is the classic Stan Smith shoe made popular in the late 1970s and early 1980s by the tennis player that the shoe is named after. Re-introduced as a golf shoe in 2021 just ahead of the Masters, we first saw the golf version in an all green rendition and most recently in highlighter shades as part of a collaboration with Vice Golf.

The 2023 version has a quieter design with grey on the upper and a pop of colour at the spikeless outsole, featuring the same marbled pallet on the outsole of the Superstar and on the lugs of the Samba.
