Butch Harmon School of Golf, Dubai Director of Instruction Justin Parsons shares the magic of the Masters where he worked with former champion Charl Schwartzel.

Having been around the game at a pretty high level, there hasn’t been that much lately that has surprised me. That was until this week.

I flew from helping Peter Uihlein at the Houston Open to Atlanta, and after catching up with my good friend Bobby “The Belt” Childs, I took an Uber to Augusta (last) Saturday. Masters week had started early.

I was driven up Magnolia Lane for the first time and that is when things started to really get exciting. The Assistant Professional took me out to find Charl Schwartzel on the course and I politely asked him where his career goes from here – we agreed it would be tough to surpass.

I walked on the course with Charl from number 4-9 and even though I was a spectator at Augusta in 2014, I found myself in awe of a magnificent and beautiful test of golf. Charl explained the right hand hole location at 7 as an example: you must be patient with Augusta, do not challenge things that shouldn’t be challenged, every time you make a par- you walk off the green feeling good. It is an amazingly testing course mentally and physically.

On Sunday, I walked all 18 holes with a combination of Pat Perez, Matt Parizale (an amateur who also happens to be a firefighter from Massachusetts), Louis Oosthuizen and Matt Rollins from PXG, Charl’s club sponsor and guest for the day.

I was the photographer, filming swings for review and action shots for an excited Matt but the day was full of nuggets of information. There are three pine trees behind the 11th green; Ben Hogan always said never to go left of them with the second shot; the angles for pitch shots at 13 and 15 are imperative due to the severity of the greens and thoughts were shared on the swirling wind that plays havoc at Augusta. What a day.

Monday began tournament week and we elected to practice and have a light day, Charl is extremely bright and knows the value of preparation and the dangers of over preparing. He has swung very well for a time now having done some excellent work on connecting up his arm swing and body turn to allow his swing to be more consistent.

He then asked me for lunch in the Champions Locker Room. I walked in and found myself with Charl, Tiger, Phil and two others. I ate whilst trying to remain as cool as possible as they all talked about the past and the present Masters.

Charl showed me his locker which he shares with Seve and there was his green jacket won in 2011. On Tuesday (yes Tuesday) the crowds were huge as we warmed up beside Tiger and Phil. Charl played 9 holes on his own and hit it nicely and hit a lovely ‘skipper’ at 16. We had lunch again with the aforementioned and in as much as I felt more acquainted than the day before, this has been a very special week so far.

Editor’s note: Schwartzel missed the -5 cut by a shot after signing for rounds of 72-78.

Justin Parsons is the Director of Instruction at The Butch Harmon School of Golf at The Els Club, Dubai.

The top four players at this week’s 2018 Faldo Series Middle East Championship in Al Ain all train at the Butch Harmon School of Golf in Dubai. Here, BHSG Dubai Director of Instruction Justin Parsons runs the rule over Josh Hill, Arjun Gupta, Toby Bishop and Krishiv Tekchandani.

Related: Josh Hill fires closing 62 to waltz Faldo Series event by six shots

Josh Hill (69-65-62) CHAMPION

This tall, hard-working young English player works with Joe Marshall at the BHSG Dubai. Joe has done a great job simplifying his swing which already allows him a consistent, straight ball flight. He is a keen strategist despite his tender years and is also very competitive. Josh works diligently and rounds his skills with a good balance of short game and play. The dominant player in the set, his scores at The Faldo Series underline his serious potential.

Arjun Gupta (70-66-66) Tied second

A lean and flamboyant talent, Arjun has many of the traits that I think will take him to the top. His movement, creativity and unflappable nature have seen him succeed in recent times and as he grows and his body stabilises his incredible speed and the pressure that he puts on the ball, Arjun will continue to improve. His swing and practice habits as well as his course management have all improved this season and with continued work, expect good things.

Toby Bishop (70-66-66) Tied second

Toby Bishop

Student of Irish coach Jamie McConnell, Welsh player Toby Bishop is very committed and devoted to a process of continued improvement. His swing has become much more stable and balanced with a combination of good training and a serious approach to good, basic postural, stabilising and balanced training in the gym. Toby’s grit and work ethic single him out as someone who can go far.

Krishiv Tekchandani (73-68-68) 4th
A member of the BHSG High School Program, Krishiv trains steadily under me with guidance from the wider team. His noted improvement this season has stemmed mainly from postural improvements made possible through our medical team as well as pilates sessions that have allowed his to start swinging and playing the way he wants to. He is fully committed to the process of becoming a good player and is honest and forthright in his self assessment, all traits that also stand him out for the future.

These four train, play and compete together in various BHSG programs and their scores are testament to the bright futures they share. Congrats lads!

Peter Uihlein finished T-23 at -5, 15 strokes behind winner Russell Henley, at last year’s Houston Open.

Golf Digest Middle East columnist Justin Parsons flew into Texas on Sunday to help Peter Uihlein prepare for the Houston Open. The PGA Tour rookie needs victory to punch a late ticket to Augusta National.

I find myself at my fourth PGA Tour event of the year here at the Houston Open in Texas. I flew Sunday from Dubai – it’s amazing what you can do with Emirates, just under 14000km’s in a day and had a bit of rest Sunday night before starting preparations Monday.

We met at The Golf Club of Houston in Humble around 35 minutes from our accommodation. The Harmon family have a long history here in the Lone Star State with Claude Harmon Snr having spent spells as the professional at Lochinvar while Butch attended the University of Houston. The biggest Harmon influence in Houston was Dick Harmon who sadly passed away in 2006. Dick has two learning centres in Houston including one at this week’s venue.

Related: 2018 Houston Open tee times, viewer’s guide

So on to the range on Monday morning with Peter and his team for the week – coach, caddy, manager and trainer. A quick warm up and out on a cart to the back nine with young U.S. player Blayne Barber. Seeing Peter on the range and on course is vital. We were happy that no shots were going to the left, a principal which Peter has built his new approach around and it was good to see him at ease on a course he enjoys.

I believe there is a lot about the way a course appears and plays for players at this level, whether its the distance of the holes, the shape, green complexes or just the way the course appears to them. When you look at the consistent winners and top performers at certain venues, this is more than coincidence.

The other encouraging factor is the time of year. Peter started to play really nicely around this time last year and also won on the European Tour in Madeira in the Spring, It was nice to remind him of this, a further confidence booster after last week’s win over Rory McIlroy in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

Related: Parsons pleased to see a “more aggressive” Uihlein rewarded with McIlroy scalp

Back to the range after nine holes, we had a quick debrief on the swing.

Peter’s takeaway

This picture (above) captured a beautiful two iron from 263 yards at The Golf Club of Houston’s par-5 13th. We like to see a slightly more open/shallow/rotated look here in the takeaway – some would refer to as ‘textbook’. This works for the way that Peter moves his shoulders and can load his backswing from here on up to the top.

The delivery

We also check the delivery of the club. This is on a nice line, just above his right arm with the club carrying a good amount of loft. We want to stay away from ever seeing the club steeper (more upright) and the face more closed (pointed down) at this point.

Over the course of practice, we have looked at how knockdown shots can be controlled and made some small adjustments to set up for these shots in order for Peter to be able to hold them up to right hand hole locations. We also discussed distance wedge shots and how we can improve these in tournament play. Strategies and how the shots are ‘brought to life’ should help this week.

It’s always a thrill to see the talent that Peter has and I remind myself that I am very fortunate to be sharing his journey on the PGA Tour.

There looks to be a storm moving in for today and my plan is to watch on Thursday (Ed’s note: Uihlein is off at 9.30pm UAE time in the opening round alongside Harris English and Retief Goosen) and Friday before heading to Augusta National on Saturday to get to work with 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, Peter needs a win here in Houston to make it to the first major of the year – you never know!

Golf Digest Middle East columnist Justin Parsons gives his take on Tiger Woods’ chances of overturning a five shot deficit in the final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational overnight.

During those long, dark Tiger-less days, I was often asked whether the former world No.1 would ever make it back to the winner’s circle. My answer was decisive – no chance.

Sadly (for me, anyway) I was forgetting a rule that the Harmon’s have taught me when it comes to judging players and talent. Butch’s first question when he is working with any player is “what have you won lately?”

We need to remember that Tiger won EVERYTHING! At all levels and across his career, he was so dominant that we took the great things he did for granted. The golf psychologists will remind us that nothing is as powerful for a player than the picture of them with the trophy.

In the ?. Over ?. Over ?.#MustSeeMoments pic.twitter.com/UIMJyfAw4H

— PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) March 17, 2018

Another logical Harmon theme is that everyone has a level. Rory McIlroy is a +6 handicap and pretty much has been since he was 14. Whether he demonstrates it each and every day, that’s his level. There have been one or two who have gone down a level or two and never made it back – former world No.1 David Duval and 1991 Open champion Ian Baker-Finch notable among them. But Tiger’s level was even higher.

Former Open champion Darren Clarke, a regular visitor to the Butch Harmon School of Golf here in Dubai of late, played many practice rounds with Woods in his pomp (Tiger was fascinated with the control Darren had with the driver) and quickly says he was the best he ever saw. Strike, control, length, creativity, golf IQ, short game and putting – Darren assures me that no one came close and I’m inclined to trust his judgement. So without assuming, we must remember that Tiger’s level was as high as any we have ever seen.

Six ?.@TigerWoods gets back in red figures on Moving Day! pic.twitter.com/P4jHoLkLwG

Attached to the demise was injury, a disastrous private life, too much swing and fitness experimentation. Each of these take time to steady and make right but it seems he’s done just that. Here’s what I’ve seen:

– His back operation was a success and he must feel better and have better balance.

– He seems much more at ease privately and publicly. Tiger grew up late in life but to be fair to him, he was pretty busy early on.

– He is doing the swing stuff himself. Tiger learned a lot from a lot of good people. It looks pretty good albeit he still gets a little loose in transition and slides/lowers/over uses his lower body. But all in all, it’s very good.

– Tiger’s fitness is probably complimentary to his injury and golf now. I think we are getting closer to having an idea of how to train golfers now but that is another topic for another day.

So tonight he needs to come from five back to win at Bay Hill. This would be astounding and the Masters run in will be well and truly on. His short game and putting make Woods a realistic chance to win or at least contending at Augusta.

Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas, the favourites for the green jacket in my opinion, are missing from the Arnold Palmer Invitational this week, off prepping.

But maybe Tiger will prove me wrong again. I won’t make the mistake of writing the Big Cat off again.

Sitting on an early flight from Belfast to London en-route to Charlotte for the U.S. PGA Championship as I write this, I’ve had time to reflect on an eventful summer. The PGA at Quail Hollow, the fourth Major of the year, is the third that I have worked at this season, a record for me.

The winners of the previous three bigs have been interesting in so much as they all shown us different ways to play the game and employ unique coaching styles. It is healthy to embrace the unique qualities of any given player rather than trying to teach everyone the same way. So, lets look at how they got it done:

SERGIO GARCIA
The Masters – Augusta National

Sergio Garcia has had one teacher, his father Victor. He is of course sublimely talented but the talent has been able to be released as he has never become clouded or stuttered with different messages. The feels and words have been consistent and comforting and he has had the patience (at last) to allow things to happen on the biggest stage. You can learn a lot about the swing from just watching Sergio’s grip, he has a beautiful grip which allows his hands/wrists to not only load and lean the club as we have seen but also control the club face. It’s one of the best there has been.

BROOKS KOEPKA
U.S. Open – Erin Hills

Andrew Redington

Brooks Koepka could have been a rugby center, baseball player or a power lifter. Strong as an ox and epitomising the modern day golf athlete, his dominance at Erin Hills was stunning. He has an excellent team around him led by my good friend Claude Harmon III who links with others such as strength and conditioning coach Joey ‘D’ioslavi. Claude’s messages to Brooks are also simple. He has worked towards Brooks being more one dimensional. A power fade- sounds strange but when you have the speed that Brooks has, he can attain consistency and clarity with this move. What you see again is a simple, repetitive message to help the talent get out. Brooks and his team have made the modern approach work and expect more from him in the future.

JORDAN SPIETH
The Open Championship – Royal Birkdale

Jordan Spieth looked great walking into the range at Royal Birkdale early in the week and he looked great with the Claret Jug walking to his private jet Sunday night.

It’s been a long night, but @JordanSpieth and the Claret are heading home @NetJets to Dallas. #onlyNetJets #claretjugexpress pic.twitter.com/bepOBM8GgN

— NetJets Golf Team (@Netjetsgolfteam) July 24, 2017

What struck me about him was how ready he was, fully prepared. I have known his coach Cameron McCormick for 10 years now and he, like Jordan, is clever, prepared, diligent and professional. Cameron works hard to ensure that his players attain good contact and control their path, again consistent in the simplicity of his approach. Where he excels in my view is the way that he organises and coordinates training, competitive practice into improvement and preparation. I walked nine holes with Cameron Wednesday of the Open. He was preparing another player and his approach is truthfully holistic – no stone is left unturned. Jordan is a true champion and one who I think will have a career Grand Slam given time.

So there we have it, three Major winners with unique styles of coaching, attitude, preparation and swing. My advice to you? Try to find your best way of doing things.

This is the first U.S. Open I’ve attended and after we practiced for the first time on Monday afternoon, I’ve got to say Erin Hills really wasn’t what I expected to find.

Certainly off the tee, the golf course is big and it’s pretty wide to be honest. It’s right out in front of you so I spent Monday looking for different strategies off the tees to ensure we avoid the really penal areas.

I think some of the players have made more of this whole fescue thing than they’ve probably needed to. I think Rory’s comments are probably correct in that you really shouldn’t be missing a fairway that’s 60 yards wide. That said, if you do find the rough, you are going to get punished.

The one thing I would say is the fescue is very, very heavy right off the fairway whereas if you do actually end up missing by 15 or 20 yards, you will invariably get a better lie which does seem a little unfair.

They’ve taken the rough in by three to five feet on most holes so it presents pretty well off the tee although there are two or three blind tee shots to be negotiated.

I think the golf course from a second shot point of view, that’s really where we going to see the men separated from the boys. Look for some good iron players to do well, providing they can drive it far enough because I don’t think its going to favour a shot hitter.

Crazy golf it’s not
The pin locations I’ve seen for this morning are pretty well tucked in the green complexes. It’s a new courses and the designers have done well not to make it too crazy, but the green completes are challenging with a lot of little shoulders and shelfs and places where they can hide the flags.

The first round pin positions

Certainly on reviewing the pin placements for Thursday, there’s a lot of flags that are tight to the front edges and tight to the edges of greens.

We’ve been looking at ways, certainly on the half dozen holes you can get in with a mid to short iron, particularly the three or four short iron holes, of making sure we understand the angles that we are going in at. We’ve also paid close attention to some of the pin locations that will be both helped and hindered by some little shelfs and little shoulders that you can get access to.

The greens are quick, The surfaces don’t look that good but that’s just the fescue. They seem to be running very well. Some are very, very fast and there are a lot of run offs on either side so again look for good chippers to do well this week.

If you think of the 9th at The Els Club in Dubai, maybe not quite as severe as that, but the ball running down to a little gathering area. So don’t be surprised if somebody with a good chipping game, whose able to negotiate that fairly well, challenges. In true US Open style, the winner will obviously need to putt well too.

We had a weather warning last night [Wednesday], kind of like a tornado warning at one stage, but the weather seems settled this morning, light winds, maybe 20 degrees already at 7am and I know they’re away already in the first round.

So you looking for players that are solid off the tee, hit it far enough, guys in what I call the mid to upper echelon, you know, the likes of Westwood, Stenson, Rose, all the way up to DJ and Bubba Watson. You definitely need to hit it far enough to contend.
I think we’ll also be talking about a good iron player come Sunday, somebody who can really control the trajectory and the shape of the ball coming into the green. So again, guys like Molinari, guys like Rose are possibly going to do well.

I watched DJ practice yesterday and he looked a little bit rusty. But Claude [Harmon] and he did some good work and by the end of the session he looked in pretty good spirits.

I attended the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth for the first time in 2016. It was not quite as exciting as a Masters or an Open, but I had grown up watching the likes of Faldo, Seve and Woosie playing the famed West Course in the former World Matchplay Championships and I was looking forward to the newer strokeplay experience.

Sadly it was well below par – or over par depending on which way you look at it. The greens were very poor, bunkers too deep and unrecognisable from previous years. The new shapes of the greens only served to emphasize that all the changes made seemed to have tricked up the layout just a little too much.

After a return visit last month I am delighted to share that many of those disappointments have been rectified and the golf course is once again worthy of such a great championship.

I have been fortunate to work with former U.S. Amateur champion and European Tour winner Peter Uihlein since August 2016 and as his game has started to come around, I thought I would detail some of the areas which we go into at tournaments like this. I got into London on the Sunday before and planned to stay through the first round on the Thursday; this is quite normal for coaches whose main area is preparation and checking.

Justin Parsons has worked with Peter Uihlein for nearly a year. Getty Images

We have made some fairly major changes to Peter’s prelude to hit and his takeaway, softening out the move back into his heels and ensuring that he has a little more loft (more open) with the club as it moves away. The week gave me the chance to observe how well these changes had maintained since his last Dubai visit before the tournaments in China and I thought he was doing a good job.

His driving, which had deserted him a little for some time, is becoming a strength with the only hardship being a move towards a left to right fade shot which doesn’t really suit Wentworth. I made one or two suggestions based on points already covered but I think it is always best to keep the technical detail low during tournament weeks.

SEE ALSO
Justin Parson’s take on the proposed new The Rules of Golf

We played a seven hole loop on Monday and a full 18-hole practice round Tuesday. Strategies from the tee were discussed as well as how to access some more difficult flags. The sub-air system on the new greens had worked well and they were fast and true – some extra time getting used to the improved surfaces was also evident.

Peter’s caddy Ben Hayes has done a great job since he took the bag. Ben and I discuss what we would like to see as well and hopefully we are forming a strong team together.

All of the equipment manufacturers were at Wentworth in force and the one adjustment that Peter and Liam from Titleist were working on was a two iron that Peter could hit a little further than his current model.

Peter Uihlein congratulates eventual champion Alex Noren on his brilliant 10-under 62 in the final round. Getty Images

The current club goes around 240-245 yards in the air and we were looking for an extra 10 yards. Peter is not carrying a three wood at present given that there is generally trouble at around 280-300 on tour courses. Peter felt the two iron was leaving him a little far back and although it would be preferable to have the three wood back in the bag, a player’s confidence and decisions are very important. A black graphite (extremely stiff) shaft made it to the range and although it covered the distance, it had a tendency to leak to the right so we made a couple of lie angle changes before deciding to stick to the original weapon.

On the Wednesday, a very busy day with a big pro-am, we spent some time on the range. I gave Peter some short iron and wedge challenges – controlling starting direction and trajectory but again avoiding too much technique talk. We also did a little session on the putting green where I was able to liaise with Paul Vizanko from Scotty Cameron’s Tour Department. Paul has known Peter for 15 years and helped me understand many of his underlying tendencies. This is another great part of getting to these events, learning from the true experts in our industry.

Peter eventually finished in a tie for 30th but had the fortune to play with Alex Noren as he blitzed his way through the field with a final round of 10-under 62. He took a lot from Alex’s determined and warrior-like attitude and I hope that as Peter continues to improve and gain confidence, he can put in similar performances.

Welcome to my new ‘Range Rover’ column here at GolfDigestME.com. I am looking forward to sharing my insights from a career in coaching as well as giving my take on current topics, from tour golf around the globe to developments closer to home in the Middle East.

I’ve learned how to best help players from the famed Harmon family and this has been a thrill as you’d expect. Butch Harmon’s commentary has drawn plaudits due to its clarity, realism and honesty. “If it barks like a dog, smells like a dog, it’s probably a dog,” he would say. I will try to bring you the same dose of honesty and I hope we can also have some fun along the way.

The recent alterations to The Rules of Golf as well as some threats and positioning by The R&A and USGA on other topics seems as good a place as any to start.

I’m happy to report the armchair rules official, the type of person whose “thrilling” dinner conversation is likely to see you nod off before you’ve finished your entree, hit the headlines for possibly the last time in April.

One such busy-body spotted Lexi Thompson improperly re-mark her ball during the ANA Inspiration and pounced. You have to question why s/he found not only the time, but the inclination, to email the LPGA to report the (hardly) horrific crime. Indeed, could it have been a fan, friend or family member of one of Thompson’s nearest rivals?

But setting aside the desire to deride the emailer further, the infraction and resultant email ultimately cost Thompson the first ladies major of the year and once again made golf look unable to police itself. That’s a crime because golfers are, generally, the game’s most noble policemen and women.

In swooped The R&A and the USGA, removing the ability of television viewers to interfere in the game anymore. It was a good call and not before time.

Not long after followed a further statement set to ban green-mapping technology in tournament play. I suspect this will be remembered as the beginning of a move towards a faster game with less outside help.

These decision makers are not professional golfers, nor even professional sports people which is a column for another day. In just about every other multi-million/billion dollar sport, they are and should be.

Ultimately the rulers of our game want us to stand to the side of the ball, club in hand, eyeball the target, hit the ball, find the ball and then hit it again without undue delay. They don’t want us to use lasers, tazers, yardages, GPS trackers, green-maps. Nor do they want us to be lined up or have clubs dangling from our chins (plumb bobbing).

But let’s be honest – golf is too slow at every level and needs to be sped up.

Golf at tour level is particularly snail paced. Like waiting in a waiting room slow. Some will argue the rulers of the game are old-fashioned but I think they might have a vision which makes the game faster and more fun. We talk about the game being athletic, a sport, but maybe we need to play it more like a sport.

On reflection, it is sad that I spend time ‘slowing down’ the really good young players that come through the golf school. I prepare them for the waiting room wait because if they play naturally and quickly, by the time they make the bigger stage they will stall, start thinking too much and fall out of their natural rhythm given the slow pace of tour play.

I hope in time that I will be forced to speed them up again. Finally, slowly, we seem to be heading in the right direction which is a positive step ahead for our great game.

Justin Parsons is the Director of Instruction at the Butch Harmon School of Golf at The Els Club, Dubai. Among his pupils is celebrated Dubai-based Indian amateur No.1 Rayhan Thomas.

Forget the high draw – this is the go-to shot you’ll see most at the majors

[divider] [/divider]

The twin revolutions in equipment and athleticism that have transformed golf over the past two decades have also had a dramatic impact on the way the top modern day tour professionals flight the ball. When I was growing up, many of the top players would employ a fairly pronounced draw as their stock shot. In the 1980s and 90s, draws flew significantly farther than fades and playing with plenty of shot shape was standard with the old tour wound balata balls.

As a result, most of the best players of that era had a lot of hand action in their swings through impact with the ‘reverse C’ finish position a common sight among the game’s finest. But today, what you see now is a lot of players hitting what we would refer to as a tour pro fade. This is a really powerful, very straight shot that might contain just a little bit of fade spin that makes the ball fall to the right. The way players hit this shot is of course quite complex, but in the video below I have identified two key components in the swing that are vital in producing a tour pro fade, and illustrated a couple of drills that you can try in order to gain a better feel for this very reliable, powerful shot.
