Two-time DP World Tour winner Andrea Pavan has reportedly suffered serious injuries after a freak accident while competing at this week’s Investec South African Open Championship in Stellenbosch on the DP World Tour.
The news was first shared by the X account Monday Q Info, which reported that the 36-year-old Italian fell down an elevator shaft on Wednesday. According to multiple sources cited in the post, the elevator doors opened on Pavan’s floor but the car was not there. He is said to have fallen from several floors.
Those same sources indicated that while the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Pavan underwent surgery that lasted several hours.
Pavan was in South Africa competing in the DP World Tour event at Stellenbosch Golf Club. A spokesperson for the Tour confirmed that he withdrew from the tournament due to injury but declined to provide further details, citing medical confidentiality.

The two-time DP World Tour winner is one of Italy’s most accomplished players of the past decade. He claimed his first Tour title at the 2018 D+D Real Czech Masters and added a second at the 2019 BMW International Open, where he beat Matthew Fitzpatrick in a playoff. A former top 75 player in the world.
The incident has cast a shadow over the Investec South African Open Championship, one of the Tour’s oldest and most historic events.
